Agent, 4-H Find forms and event information on: Fashion Camp Theme: I SURVIVED FASHION BOOT CAMP The Fashion Board chose this theme to reflect their personal excitement about fashion and the attitude that the campers will adopt as they travel through the experiences at camp. A few of the educational activities for campers include: a sewing caddy, flat iron case, wooden boot decoration, t-shirt bag, pillowcase and a community service project. You will return home with ideas to host a fashion workshop in your parish. Schedule: The camp schedule kicks off on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. Campers and volunteers needing to drive in Friday night may request Camp Grant Walker overnight accommodations on the registration form. Please note there will be no fashion camp activities planned for Friday evening. The adult chaperone is responsible for campers until camp begins. Upon arrival please check in at the Multipurpose Building for cabin assignments. Camper Eligibility: Each parish has the opportunity to send a maximum of two 4-H campers (10-13 years old) and one adult leader (project leader, junior leader, parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc.) for camp. Due to limited space, Fashion Camp participation will be limited to 48 4-H ers (25 adults), accepted on a first-come, first served basis with paid registration fee and all completed forms. A waiting list will be maintained. Every year we have a few who cancel so register your alternates (limit 2 per parish) on the enrollment site. Do not wait until the deadline as number is limited to only 48 campers. If you are interested in attending Fashion Camp; YOU MUST CALL THE OFFICE TO REGISTER BY DECEMBER 10. 2 How 4-H Has Shaped My Career As your newest 4-H Agent here in Calcasieu Parish I would like to share with you just how many ways being a former 4-H member has shaped my career. I started 4-H like most of you did, as a 4 th grader, in the Calcasieu Parish Extension Office. I was involved in everything my mom signed me up for, so that meant competing in ALL the contest days. As a child I didn t really understand just how much those contests, workshops, livestock shows, and horse shows would impact my life and my career choices. Not only did I receive better grades in school because of 4-H, but I also learned the value of hard work, leadership, responsibility, and friendship as well as being awarded many scholarships and opportunities that I could not have gotten anywhere else. After college I decided to move north to Dallas, TX to try something new. Once in Dallas I, of course, had to job hunt. All the contacts, awards, and recognitions that I received while in 4-H helped me land a job as a nurse at a small veterinary hospital with no past experience. After 1 ½ years in Dallas I saw that my hometown 4-H office was looking for a new 4-H Agent, and I immediately jumped on the offer. So here I am. Your newest 4-H agent. It still feels strange, but at the same time a little familiar, to be on the opposite side of the desk. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you. I hope y all have an outstanding year! Get Recognition for your 4-H Graduate! This year in an effort to recognize 4-H members who are graduating, Louisiana 4-H will offer a special 4-H Honor Cord. For 4-H youth to receive the 4-H Honor Cord they must meet the following requirements: Must be an enrolled 4-H member in good standing Must be a graduating senior Must have been enrolled in 4-H for 3 years of their high school career Must have participated in at least one state sponsored 4-H program in the last 3 years Must fill out the application form and turn in to their parish office by the deadline date All forms may be obtained from the 4-H office and are due to the Calcasieu Parish 4-H office by January 13, This award is sponsored by the State 4-H Foundation. Award of Excellence for Junior 4-H Members Applications for Awards of Excellence for Junior 4-H members will be due on January 13, A club member may win the award only one time. The basic requirements are as follows: 1) Must be under 14 years of age by January 1 of the club year application is made. 2) Must have at least two (2) years of 4-H club work, including award year. 3) Must score at least 100 points on the application and scorecard. Applications are available from the 4-H Office and were distributed to Club Leaders at school. 4-H Key Club The 4-H Key Club Award in Louisiana gives recognition to 4-H Club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and in their parish. The object of the program is to encourage project growth, a broad program of 4-H club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and in their parish. The recipient of the 4-H Key Club Awards can be proud of their contribution to their club and community. A club member may win the award only one time. 3 Livestock News Livestock Premier Exhibitor Changes To get on the livestock list serv; please go to the following website or scan the code: Everyone should have your livestock show catalog by now; if you do not have it yet, you need to call the office immediately. Livestock entry forms are due BY DECEMBER 11 AT 4:30 PM. Please get your paperwork to us on time. Validation of Animals for 2016 Livestock s Animals may be validated at exhibitor residence (same as last year) if you want. Validation kits will be available for pick up at the 4-H Office. Contact the office for details. If you d like us to validate your animals for the shows; Swine : Dec. 3, 2015 Burton Coliseum 3:00 pm 6:00 pm Rabbit Meat Pen Jan. 7, H Office 4:00 pm 6:00 pm All rabbits must be validated at the 4-H office (breeding rabbits by December 1). Hardship Statement The district and/or state show manager must be notified by the given deadline if an unforeseen emergency or act of God has prevented an exhibitor from attending validation. After contacting the district and/or state show manager, hardship forms must be immediately filed along with supporting material. The deadline for making notifications and filing hardships is November 9, 2015, 4:30pm for Dairy, Beef, Sheep and Goats species and December 7, 2015, 4:30pm for Swine. These hardships will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the parish agent, district show manager and state show manager. Only cases where it is determined that the situation was unavoidable will the exhibitor be allowed to validate. This decision will be final and not subject to appeal. This year there will be some changes to the premier exhibitor program at the parish show. All species will have a contest this year, all species will be graded on the same scale, all species will gain points for attendance at the livestock showmanship clinics, and all species will have a skill-athon portion for the contest. We hope that these changes increase the educational benefit of the premier exhibitor contest. Study guides will be made available at the 4-H Office by November 16. If you have any questions about these changes, please contact Mr. Matthew or Ms. Jennifer at the 4-H office. Livestock Possession Rule Guidelines If a 4-H or FFA livestock project cannot be housed at the exhibitor s home or family property, the exhibitor must file for a hardship request for special housing. The request must be made and approved prior to possession date. If this request is not made before possession date then the exhibitor will not be allowed to show at the parish, district, and state livestock shows. There will be no exceptions to this rule, so please get your request approved before you purchase show animals this year. Please contact the 4-H Office if you need to complete this request form and we will mail a copy to you. Forms are also available on our website. Please do not wait until the last minute to get approval, because you will not be able to show. It is the 4-H or FFA member s responsibility to notify the 4-H office of the housing hardship and complete the request prior to possession date for each species.

6 HAPPY HOLIDAYS! The Holidays are here and for many people family gatherings are a time for celebration! These celebrations often involve foods that are high in fat, sugar and calories and short on nutrition. With a few minor changes, special occasion foods can be both delicious and more nutritious. Instead of feeling guilty in the New Year, make your meals this holiday season fit into a healthy lifestyle that you can manage permanently. Some seasonal favorites are naturally rich in nutrients and low in fat such as, apples, cranberries, pumpkin and sweet potatoes. Before going to a gathering, eat a healthy snack at home to prevent being tempted to overindulge in a wide variety of decadent snacks that are high in fat and calorie. Your family dinner, break the habit of overeating by eating slowly and avoid going for seconds. We know that getting together with family and friends this holiday season is a vital part of this fun-loving season. If you've been exercising, keep it up during the holiday season. If you aren't getting enough exercise, it's a great time to start! Making a few simple changes can help you maintain a healthy diet and make your holidays fit into a lifestyle of wellness.
