1 Kentlake High School Cheer 2006 Info Packet We ve got spirit and know you do! Thank you for your interest in Kentlake Cheerleading! At Kentlake, cheerleading is a team in their own right, not so different in some respects from the football, basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams for which they cheer. We look forward to a great season and encourage you to try out, no matter what your experience level. We value teamwork, enthusiasm, a good work ethic, commitment and a positive attitude in addition to dance, cheer and tumbling skills. We invite you to visit the website and view online videos of our squad in action as well as sign up for updates about try outs. Information will also be available at middle schools whose students will attend Kentlake. Good luck! Coach Shaw Website: More Information About Cheerleading: Cheer Grooms Successful Leaders Who Know Teamwork Did you know that cheerleaders get recruited for college scholarships and, in some cases; they put in more practice hours than the football team? American Cheerleader lists 225 colleges and junior colleges that offer full and partial scholarships from Penn State, which awards $1,500 annually to cheerleaders who maintain a 3.0 GPA, to Three Rivers Community College, Poplar Bluff, Mo., which awards a dozen full-tuition scholarships. Corporate America often seeks ex-cheerleaders, especially for sales jobs, where success goes to energetic and personable people who know how to work a crowd. T. Lynn Williamson, coach of the University of Kentucky 12-time national champs says, I've got a note on my desk right now from a pharmaceutical company with a sales opening," Williamson says. "I get these calls regularly. Cheerleaders know how to set goals and how to work hard to attain them. They are competitive, and they understand personality and body language." US history is filled with cheerleaders including: Presidents George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan, forty-year Senator Trent Lott, Halle Berry, Katie Couric, Kirk Douglas, Samuel L. Jackson, Madonna, Mandy Moore and Sandra Bullock, to name a few. Cheerleading is for guys and girls Did you know that for the first 100 years, cheerleading was dominated by men? The first organized cheer squad was in 1865 at Princeton University and women started to join squads shortly after WWII. Today, while 97% of all cheerleaders are female, almost 50% of collegiate cheerleaders, many attending college on scholarship, are male. (American Sports Data, Inc.). In 2005 Kentlake took first place at state competition for the small co-ed division. References: Version 10April06 1
2 Tryout Forms Required Information for Parents & Cheerleader Please read the following information and bring the attached forms to cheerleading tryouts. If you have any questions, please contact us via the contact us button at Good Luck! Spirit & Competition Squad Overview In 2006, Kentlake Cheer will be comprised of two equal squads with different purposes. Both squads will cheer together through football seasons. Then, beginning in January, the Spirit Squad cheers at Kentlake sporting events and the Competitive Squad participates in local, regional and interstate competitions. The intent of focusing Cheerleaders on Spirit or Competition is to provide cheer opportunities as well as balance for these young leaders to manage academics, cheerleading as a sport, family life activities and in some cases part-time employment. At Kentlake, administrators require cheerleaders to support boys and girls sports equally. Thus cheerleaders attend Boys football, Boys and Girls basketball, Boys wrestling, Girls gymnastics, Boys baseball and Girls softball at home and many away games. Additionally when these teams place in local or state school competitions cheerleaders are required to attend. The completion routines, tumbling training, practice schedule and approximately twice a month weekend competitions are equally demanding. Kentlake Cheer competes in local, regional and Washington State Cheerleading Championships and may elect to attend National Competition. In 2006, the Competition Squad will be by audition and cheerleaders must be in good standing both academically and financially to participate. The competition squad requires a continued commitment, tumbling training and additional expense due to occasional weekend events with some overnight travel from January through April of each year. Both squads are encouraged to take tumbling; however, tumbling is required for the Competitive team members. The organization of two squads post Football season is with the intent of providing each squad great opportunities while actively managing the physical and time demands of the sport of cheerleading. Academic Overview Cheerleaders are required to maintain a 2.5 grade point average throughout the 2006 season. Grade checks are taken at random intervals. If a cheerleader s grade is below 2.5 during grading cycles or at academic checks a plan may be put into place and will be monitored by the coaches or the athletic department of KLHS. Behavior Overview Off The Field: Cheerleaders are expected to demonstrate exemplarity behavior in all settings both public and personal. You are always a representative of KLHS and young women in leadership in every setting. Your behavior and attitudes counts! Winning squads think of each other as much as they think of themselves. At a cheer competition in 2006, one cheerleader of a squad spilled a bowl of dry cereal all over the competition mat. Her squad instinctively pitched in to clean it up. They demonstrated a winning spirit of all for one even in a potentially embarrassing situation came to one another s aid. Great teams take of one another. Miscommunication happens. Cheerleaders are to address any concerns or conflicts directly with the person in question privately and may incorporate coaches for assistance to seek resolve. Version 10April06 2
3 Tryout Forms Required Cheerleaders are not to engage in gossip, rumors, telling unflattering stories\news about others, inappropriate vocabulary or unsportsmanlike behavior. Cheer squad members must know all the cheers and routines for a game. Sitting out is unacceptable. On The Field: Conversation on the field between cheerleaders is only to communicate cheers/chants, increase crowd involvement and encourage the team. Socializing with friends while the game is in process is not allowed. All assigned games are mandatory. Arrival times are placed on calendar by each event. Members are required to dress in full uniform. Hair must be pulled back away from the face and secured in a ponytail if shoulder length or below. Hair ties need to be uniform. Make-up should be worn in moderation. No jewelry or nail color. Nails need to be athletic length. There is no chewing gum. You may not leave early from an event unless pre-arranged with a Coach. Payment Requirements For the season, payment commitments (e.g. for uniforms and other required cheer items) are required to be in good standing or cheerleader participation may be deferred by the Coaches or Cheer Board. Accounts are considered in good standing if monthly payment arrangements are being met or the account is paid in full. Fundraising opportunities are provided to assist families to subsidize cheer costs; however, payment responsibilities are retained by the cheerleader and parent/guardian who authorized cheer participation. If a member is removed from or chooses to quit the squad, they are still responsible for payment of all items ordered. Deposits made for cheer clothes, shoes, and/or camps are non-refundable. Fundraising Philosophy We encourage the team to participate in all fundraising activities regardless of financial standing. The intent is to build team relationships that come from working together and having shared experience. Team events increase bonding which is fundamental to the squad success as practices become more focused. Fundraising earnings are distributed among cheerleaders who participate in each fundraiser. Cheer acknowledges that each family s financial considerations are unique and cheer parents are given the option to donate their cheerleaders earnings to the cheer help fund which is applied towards families with financial needs as determined by the treasurer and coaches. ASB funds allocated to Cheer are used to pay for all team activities (e.g. competition prep of routine, music creation, specialized instructors). ASB guidelines denote that funds from ASB shall not be applied to individual cheer accounts. Fundraising Activities Starting in April, Falcon Cheer conducts fundraising events approximately every four to six weeks. Funds are applied to cheerleader s individual accounts towards required costs as well as group costs such a competitions or team activities. Fundraising activities consist of car washes, craft shows, conducting cheer clinic for elementary and middle school students, Valentine flower, Sees Candy Sale, Spirit Beads, Safeway coupons and more. Parent participation is strongly encouraged. Cost Summary Sheet For cheerleaders new to the Kentlake squad, below is listed a representational summary of costs: Version 10April06 3

The competition squad requires an additional level of commitment, tumbling training and weekend events which incur additional costs and some overnight travel from January through April. Upcoming Performances We invite you to come to a game or cheer competition to see Kentlake Cheer. Detailed information regarding the events can be found on the public calendar at PTSA Cheer Board Each season, four positions are elected from the parent members who serve as representatives for the parents and cheerleaders. These leaders must be members of Kentlake PSTA as required by PSTA guidelines and applications are available at KLHS and the initial cheer Board meetings. This team, comprised of the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer lead the cheerleader/parent monthly meetings, ensure that coordination and organization of events for the cheerleaders, such as the year end Cheer Banquet and fundraising events are pre-approved by Kentlake PSTA as required. Parent Participation All parents should support their teenagers sport by participating in one or more PTSA fundraising event during the season. The majority of events are scheduled out for the year which is intended to give parents with various commitments and schedule constraints an opportunity to participate. It s a great way to engage collaboratively with your child in something that is important to them. All cheer fundraising events are lead by a cheerleader and assisted by an adult. The intent is to provide cheerleaders leadership opportunities and interactions with adults to mentor their leadership, planning and communication experience. Required Cheer Tryout Forms The following forms, completed and signed, are required to participate in tryouts. For those invited to join the squad, forms are valid for the duration of squad participation for a full season.
