2 TournamentS each WEEK coaches WILL TALK ABOUT planned tournaments AND post THEM ON THE bulliten board IN THE WRESTLING room. What to Bring to Tournaments Tournament Fee (usually around 10$) Singlet Wear sweats over the top Wrestling Shoes & Socks Nail Clippers Bag for Belongings as items are usually left in the bleachers. The Guillotine A listing of youth tournaments throughout the state is posted on The Guillotine website. The guillotine is a great source of informtaion for anything having to do with amateur wrestling in Minnesota. It covers youth, high school, and college age wrestling. WHat to Expect at WrEstling Tournaments Organized chaos-- a lot of people, noise and excited kids. Most tournaments have 4 man Round Robin format that groups wrestlers by grade, weight, and sometimes level of experience. Positions are filled by volunteer parents and high school students. The referees are usually high school wrestlers doing their best--take it easy on them! Parents & Fans wait in the stands until their wrestler is called to the mat for his/her matches. Some tournaments don t allow parents/fans to watch matside.--only Coaches. Most tournaments begin with Pre-K and work their way up through the remaining grade levels. Concessions and wrestling gear are normally available for sale. WHat to do when you get there 1. Register your wrestler and pay registration fee at the door. 2. Go to designated room for Weigh-ins. There they will do a skin check and check fingernails. 3. Meet coach and teammates in the gym on the mat for warm ups. 4. Coaches will be wearing Elk River Youth Wrestling Polos. Make sure coaches know you are there so they are available for your match. 5. Listen for your wrestlers grade to be called then report to the staging area. 6. Go with your wrestler and others in the bracket to your assigned mat where the matches will take place. Be sure to stay near the mat and listen closely for your wrestlers name. 7. Go to the awards table after your bracket is completed to collect your award. 8. To keep the team feel it is recommended that you stay to cheer on your teammates. 9. If your wrestler has anxiety about wrestling, you still can come to watch so they can see what it is all about, and to cheer on the team!

3 Practice Level One: Prek-2nd grade Level Two: 3rd Grade-6th Grade What to bring to Practice Wear Wrestling Shirt/Shorts Wrestling Shoes Headgear (optional) Water Bottle Jackets & Belongings can be kept in the lockers outside the wrestling room. WHat to Expect at WrEstling Practice Practices begin with a warm-up and conditioning exercises such as stretching, running, push-ups, and crunches. Coaches will demonstrate wrestling techniques, which wrestlers will then practice with their wrestling partner. Some practices will include live wrestling and games. Each wrestler will be paired with another wrestler of comparable weight and skill. Wrestlers are expected to listen and behave during practice, so as not to distract the coaches and other wrestlers. Timeouts may be given to kids who are disruptiveor disrespectful during practice. Wrestler Expectations Come with a great attitude ready to participate. Arrive 10 minutes before practice begins. Use the restroom before practice starts Be on the mat ready to start on time. Take a shower at home immediately after practice. All wrestling clothing should be washed after every practice. Jackets, Hats, and Gloves should be worn to and from practice to keep everyone healthy. Wash winter outerwear weekly or biweekly. To keep mats clean, no street shoes are allowed on wrestling mats. Parent Expectations Parents may observe practice from the half wall. Notify coaches if you or your childs guardian will NOT be at practice. Please do not talk or make noise during coaching instruction. Please do not converse with your child while they are practicing, save conversations for after practice. Please notify head coach and pod coaches if you have concerns or your child has special needs. Arrive to pick up wrestler 10 minutes prior to practice end for a practice recap, weekend tournament announcements, and Q&A session.

This is a great opportunity for the youth to meet and see the High School Wrestlers in action! Registration begins with the 11:00am session and then the 10 am session will open once the 11am is SOLD OUT. This is an outstanding learning experience and great team event for our youth! 5 FolkStyle Wrestling Rules Object The object of a wrestling match is to gain a fall by pinning and opponents shoulders to the mat for two continuous seconds or to gain a decision by outwrestling an opponent. Length A wrestling match has three periods of one minute each. 1st Period Both wrestlers start in standing or "neutral" position. (both standing with neither wrestler having control) 2nd Period Choice of position is determined by a coin toss. The winner may choose top or bottom in "referee's" position or my opt to start in the neutral position. 3rd period Choice of position is given to the wrestler who lost the coin toss before the second period. The same options apply. Scoring Move Points Description Take Down 2 From neutral position) a wrestler gains control over his opponent down on the mat while the supporting parts of either wrestler are in bounds. Escape 1 When a defensive (bottom) wrestler gains a neutral position and his opponent has lost control while at least one wrestler is in bounds. Reversal 2 When the defensive wrestler comes from the bottom position and gains control over his opponent, either on the mat or in a rear standing position, while supporting points of either wrestler are in-bounds. Near Fall 2 or 3 When near fall criteria is met for 2 seconds. Near fall criteria is: When any part of both shoulders or scapula of the defensive wrestler are held for at least 2 seconds within four inches of the mat. OR When one shoulder or scapula is touching the mat with the other shoulder or scapula held at an angle of 45 degrees or less. If near fall criteria is met for two continuous seconds, 2 points are awarded when the defensive wrester is out of the predicament. If near fall criteria is met for five continuous seconds, a 3 point near fall is awarded when the defensive wrestler is out of the near fall situation Penalty 1 A wrestler is awarded point(s) for technical violations or infractions of the rules committed by his opponent. These points are awarded according to the penalty chart on the next page.

Technical violations for false start or incorrect starting position are 1 point penalty for each infraction following the two cautions. This infraction does not count toward disqualification. 7 Youth Wrestling organizations minnesota Youth Athletic Services (MYAS) This organization sponsors the Gopher State Championships, a large regional tournamenrt that takes place in February for (3-6 graders) and March for (PreK-2nd graders). MYAS also sponsors "Youth Day with the Gophers." MN/USA Wrestling (MNUSA) This organization is dedicated to freestyle, Greco Roman and Folkstyle wrestling at all levels. The MNUSA sanctions state qualifier tournaments throughout the season with a Folkstyle state tournament held in mid March and a state Freestyle/Greco Roman tournament held in Mid May. Northland youth wrestling association (NYWA) This organization sanctions Folkstyle qualifier tournaments in March with a state tournament at the end of March. NYWA also sponsors early season qualifier tournaments leading to a large Early Bird Tournament around Christmas each year. Mississippi youth wrestling conference (MYWC) This organization is dedicated to team wrestling. There are dual/tri/quad meets in January and individual tournament for conference championships in February.
