Robert Collier

6 Expectations of Student-Athletes Acknowledge that playing a sport is an honor and privilege, NOT a right Attend EVERY scheduled practice, scrimmage, game and other team related activities Respect all coaches, officials, teachers, teammates, and administrators Be supportive and encouraging to the team; Positive attitude Represent ICHS with integrity and class; 24/7-365 Be coachable and open to constructive feedback If absent, it is the student-athletes responsibility to contact their coach prior to practice If injured or suspended, student-athletes may be required to attend all practices and games at the discretion of the coach Abide by the ICHS Athletic Handbook Rules and Policies Random Drug Testing Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm. Napoleon Hill

10 Social Media/Website Negative Effects Everyone can see your posts! Deleting from your phone doesn t mean it s gone Expressing frustrations for all to see; nothing gets accomplished Less face-to-face communication Positive Effects IndianCreekAthletics.com check out latest on schedules, results, news and alerts Facebook/Twitter Follow to get the latest news, scores, and schedules Athletic Weekly sent each week the up-to-date, day-by-day events for the week (Just ask to be included and your will be added) Easier way to connect to a large group of people for cancellations/schedule changes Exposure for our school, community, and student-athletes Rarely have I seen a situation where doing less that the other guy is a good strategy. Jimmy Spithill

11 Positive Cheering/Effects Things Kids Say They Don t Want Their Parents To Do: Don t yell out instructions Don t yell at the officials, coaches, or my teammates Don t lecture me about my mistakes after the game Don t forget to laugh and have fun Can the behavior of fans influence game outcomes? Yes, positively your cheering can give your team that extra edge or gear or adrenaline Yes, negatively you could have torn down your team, child, official or coach. Yelling at a coach, teammate or official will only hurt your child s attitude How do we go about Positive Cheering? We work together as ONE, just as any of our sports teams The student section/cheerleaders should set the example, and the rest of the crowd should look to follow their lead Be proud of your school stand during the school fight song Do we even know the words??? (Stand during the opposing team s song shows respect) Get traditions back or start new ones! Doesn t mean you can t yell or cheer just do so in a positive manner If you yell negatively all game at an official, and there is a close call at the end, which way will he call it??? For every positive cheer/comment we make, we take a step forward; however, for every negative comment we take two steps back SO let s take the steps forward for our students and our teams to be successful! Be LOUD, Be PROUD, Be a BRAVE! All progress takes place outside the comfort zone. Michael John Bobak

12 Benefits of Athletics Academic benefits: A student-athlete s GPA is a full point higher on average than that of a non-athlete A student-athlete s attendance is well above what that is of a non-athlete Learn the balance and responsibility of grades and the positive or negative effect they can have on one s eligibility Learn skills such as time management, patience, persistence, hard-work, and even helps with social relationships Multi-Sport vs Single Sport Athlete Single Sport Often first to Quit; Overuse Injury (80% more likely to get Injured) ; Burnout Multi-Sport Better Overall Skills and Ability ; Smarter, More Creative Players ; Most College Athletes Come from Multi-Sport Background (OSU Only 1 was just a football player) ; Free *** If a student chooses to play one sport, we as Play Equals More Play (Rest, Rest, Rest) parents and coaches must support that decision, and at the same time ensure that athlete lives a balanced life, gets the proper rest and time away from that sport. Successful and Unsuccessful people do not vary in their abilities. They vary in their desires to reach their potential. John Maxwell
