Josie Makes Her Last Delivery by Sara Shields Spring 2016 St. Colman s National School Flag Day New Quay news by Tommy Fahy Last month March 2016 we were sad to hear that our post lady Josie had decided it was time to retire after delivering letters for 18 years!. Last year, when we were doing a handwriting competition about the Life of a Postperson Josie came into the school to talk about An Post. She said she gets all the letters from Kinvara Post Office every day. Josie said The Post Business is lovely because you get to meet a lot of nice people and you can enjoy a chat. We now have a new post man called Ollie. A week before her retirement we had a surprise for her. When she came to deliver the letters we invited her to come in. All the pupils and teachers were there and Tommy and I presented her with flowers and a card. We would like to say a big Thank You to Josie from New Quay N.S! We wish you many years of Happy Retirement. We will miss your friendly smile and helpful ways. On the 15 th of March 2016 schools all over Ireland raised the National Flag which is a tri colour of green, white and orange. This was to commemorate the 1916 Rising. We asked Maggie Daly the mayor of New Quay to raise our Flag. Maggie has a personal connection with the Rising, as her father was imprisoned in Frongoch Concentration Camp afterwards. When Maggie raised the flag we sang Amhrán Na bhfiann. All the students in our school dressed up as someone from 1916 and everyone made a great effort.
Líle s Time to Shine by Sara Shields Flag Day cont. Múinteoir Carmel s class sang Óró Sé Do Bheatha Bhaile and Grace which tells the story of the wedding of Grace Gifford and Joseph Mary Plunkett. Múinteoir Mary s class sang Trasna na dtonnta and they also sang the chorus of Óró Sé Do Bheatha Bhaile. They made small Irish flags which they waved as the National flag was being raised. Afterwards we went indoors where we read the Proclamation. We also read out our own Proclamation and the poem Easter 1916 by W.B. Yeats. by Tommy Fahy With the main proceedings over it was time for tea and cake. We would like to thank the Parents Association for the delicious cakes ad buns. As part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of 1916, there was special concert in Dublin. A big choir which was made up of choir members from all over Ireland performed with the National Symphony Orchestra in Collins Barracks on Easter Sunday. There was more than 1,100 people singing. 350 were children and the rest were adults. We have been participating in the Music Generation programme for the past two years. Music generation gave an opportunity to all children participating in the programme a chance to attend the concert and sing a new song specially composed for the centenary called One Hundred Years a Nation and be on TV. Líle had to go to Ennis every Saturday to practise with the Burren Chidrens Choir. The whole choir met twice to practice together with conductor David Brophy; once at the Helix in Dublin and also in Athlone IT. The concert took place in a specially constructed stage in the courtyard of Collins Barracks, Dublin. There was a bus bringing the children to Dublin. However Líle went to Dublin the day before to see her auntie who lives there. A Nation s Voice was on at 2:30pm on Easter Sunday. Everyone in our school were watching the TV. We were all delighted when we spotted Líle. Líle said she had a good time, it was fun but it was very cold. We would especially like to thank Ellie Farrell for baking a beautiful 1916 cake. It was a great day and it made me very proud to be Irish. New Quay NS will soon have another flag raising to celebrate. Turn the page for more details!!
Doodle 4 Google by Mia Farrell World Book Day by Rachel Daly Every year our school enters the Doodle for Google competition for budding artists and every year it has a different theme. This year the theme was: Ireland is. About a month after entering the Doodle for Google art competition we received some brilliant news: Two of our senior infants had gotten into the semi-finals : Maud de Eyto and Noah Farrell. After a few weeks we found out that one of our semi-finalist Noah had made it to the finals!!! On the 7th of March Noah went to Dublin to the Google headquarters with his mother and Múinteoir Mary where they announced the winners for each category and of course the overall winner. Noah was not among the winners but he still got some pretty cool prizes like: a framed copy of his doodle, a T-shirt personalised with the image of his doodle, and a Google goody bag. World book day was on the 3 rd of March this year. All of the children in New Quay N.S dressed up as a book character. We had people from 1916, 1929 and of course from this century, like W.B Yeats, Scarlett from Cathy Cassidy s book, Tris from Divergent, The Queen of Hearts, Sara Crewe from A little Princess and Mrs Root from Demon Dentist. The children in Múinteoir Mary s room dressed as fairytale, biblical and Roald Dahl characters. I dressed as Anne Frank. I wore a pattern dress, black shoes and navy tights. Anne Frank was a German girl born on June 12 th She hid in an annex from Hitler and wrote a diary about living there. Her family were betrayed to the Nazis and she died in Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp. On June 25 th 1949 her diary was published. Everyone had fabulous costumes. Congratulations Noah!!! It was a great achievement to get to the finals.
Credit Union Quiz by Kayleigh Shannon An Táisce Walk Also this term, the school took part in an An Táisce challenge to walk to school every day for two weeks. This year for the credit union quiz we went to Athenry. It was held in the Secondary School Hall. When we arrived at the school we went into the hall which was huge and there were lots of people there. Our supporters were in the front row. There were fifty four teams competing in the quiz. There were two teams allowed from each school: Teams A and B. Caoimhe, Sinéad, Lisa and Líle were on team A and Mia, Chloe, Rachel and I were on team B. A few weeks before the quiz our teacher (Muinteoir Carmel) asked us questions that could appear in the quiz which helped us prepare. We also had a test on general knowledge to see who would get on each team. Each morning the students, together with volunteer parents and teachers walked from Farrells to the school. Garda Deirdre also joined the group on one of the mornings. A great way to start the day and enjoyed by all. Thanks to all who helped out! She also gave us continents to look over. I looked over Africa which wasn t easy. The questions were mostly okay except for a few which were very hard. Team A came ninth and team B came fifth. We all got ten euro and a goodie bag afterwards. New Quay NS has just been awarded a Green Flag for biodiversity. A big THANK YOU to all who helped us achieve this flag especially the green schools committee. Congratulations and well done to all the students for all their hard work in making this award possible!
Two Special Visitors by Chloe Fahy & Sínead O Dea GREEN FLAG NEWS Bees &Wasps by Mia Farrell & Rachel Daly On the 20 th January Adam de Eyto came to our school. He talked to us about bees and wasps, their differences and their role in the environment. Adam brought in a bee apiary and he also brought in a wasp s nest that was in the Sweeney s boat all last Summer. We watched a video about bees and how they communicate by doing their Waggle dance We learned that if you move the apiary more than three feet the bees will get lost but they are able to find it if it is three miles away. We were learning about Germany in Geography so we asked Hannah Ritscher a German au pair who is staying with the Sweeneys to come in and talk to us. She comes from Cologne. Hannah came on a Thursday before Swimming. She spoke to us about some of their festivals especially Fasnacht which takes place in the week leading up to Ash Wednesday. They paint boiled eggs. They have parades and they get to dress up as whatever they want. Then we learned about the different ranks of bee in a honeybee colony, the queen who lays all the eggs, the workers who are all female and are the ones who collect the pollen and the drones who are all male. They are too bulky and thick to collect pollen. Adam brought in his bee keeper suit. Noah Farrell tried it on and he looked fab in it. The talk was fun and educational. It was very nice of Adam to give some of this time to talk to us. She played us a song which was the German equivalent of Adele s Hello. We got a very pleasant surprise on the day of the Easter holidays when Hannah arrived with a basket of eggs which she and the Sweeney children had painted. On that day also a lovely little lady called Mrs Jude came into the school to talk about her childhood. Mrs Jude is 101 years old and her birthday is in January. Being one of seventeen children it was hard when she was growing up. Sadly her mother passed away in the year 1930 when she was 15 years old. She said that her parents didn t own a farm. She hated to tell us that they owned a pub. Their only transport was their legs. She grew up in Ennistymon and moved to England when she was young. She became a nurse and got married. She had two children Philip and Maureen. She moved back to Ireland about 30 years ago and now her and her son are living very happily on the Flaggy Shore.
GREEN FLAG NEWS Birds of Prey by Paddy Nolan Making Birdfeeders & Watching Tadpoles by Caoimhe Kerrin One day in January the Green Schools Co-ordinators Jess and Karen came into our school to help us make birdfeeders. First of all we were all given pine cones. We had to tie a string onto the pine cones really tightly so the pine cones wouldn t fall off when we tied the other end to a tree. Then we put a mixture of fat and bird feed on to our pine cones. As soon as we finished our birdfeeders we ran outside and tied them to a tree. We have tadpoles at our school. We have a bowl in our garden full of tadpoles. At the start they were just frogspawn. When the tadpoles hatch they eat the jelly part of the frogspawn. 7 to 10 days after the tadpole has hatched, it will begin to swim around and feed on algae. The tadpoles in our school hatched during the Easter holidays and at this stage are swimming around but have still to develop their arms and legs and lose their tail before they become frogs. The process from frogspawn to frog usually takes 6-9 weeks. We will be returning them to their pond shortly. On the eighteenth of January Jamie from the Birds of Prey at Ailwee Cave came to our school to tell us about Birds of Prey. He brought a Peregrine Falcon called Jamie with him so he mostly talked to us about Peregrine Falcons. The falcon had a mask on over his eyes so that he couldn t see us. Otherwise he would have been scared. Jamie told us about how the female Peregrine Falcon can fly up to a speed of 220mh in a straight line but can not go very fast when cutting corners while the male can only go up to 100mh in a straight line but he can cut corners faster than the female. This is because the female is bigger than the male so that the female can sit on her eggs to keep them warm. After he was finished talking to us he took the mask off the Falcon and we got to see his face. The Falcon had huge eyes and a long beak. We didn t get to see him fly but we still learned a lot about Birds of Prey.
