Burren Centre Competition by Kayleigh Shannon Summer 2016 St. Colman s National School GREEN FLAG NEWS Enjoy the Summer holidays! School reopens on Wed 31st August New Quay news Flag Raising & Art Exhibition by Mia Farrell In 2015 we were invited to take part in an art competition for the Burren Centre Kilfenora. We had to submit an entry for how The Burren Centre and The Kilfenora Ceilí Band Parlour will look in We were put into teams of four. Each team was assigned a different room in the centre. When the teams finished each picture, we joined them all up and it formed one big picture. A few months later, in April 2016 Múinteoir Carmel got a letter inviting us to visit the Centre. We met some people who manage the Centre, one of which was my uncle (Seán Shannon). They told us we had won the competition and we were delighted. For our prize we were given a tour of the Centre, a cheque and a book on the Burren. The Centre was really fun and at the end and we were treated a huge feast of cookies, muffins, sweets and drinks. My favourite part was the feast at the end! They are going to keep our entry and display it in nine years time when the Centre is 50 years old. Imagine we will be in our twenties by then! On Friday the 17 th of June we had a flag raising ceremony to celebrate gaining our fifth green flag for Biodiversity and an Art Exhibition of our Art work completed during the year. We went outside to watch the flag raising ceremony when our local musicians Chris Droney, Séan Tyrrell and Gary O Brien raised the new flag. Then we went inside into the exhibition room and several parents were awarded with cards in honour of all the help that they had given us this year.
GREEN FLAG NEWS Flag Raising & Art Exhibition by Mia Farrell down by 6 points early on, we played better in the second half and we won by 10 points in the end. Our last game was against Clouna /Furglan. We lost that game also, so we were knocked out of the league. School Hurling by Tommy Fahy Lots of members of the New Quay community came to celebrate with us and we were very happy. We then tucked into all the different tarts, buns, cookies and other delicious treats that were piled on the tables while everyone looked at the many paintings, drawings and other forms of art that we had made this year with Cate King and Ellie Farrell in our monthly Art Appreciation Classes. While they were walking around Séan, Gary, Chris and his granddaughter Ciara played some lovely tunes. All in all it was a very enjoyable day and thanks to everyone who helped out and the Parents Association for the goodies!!! On the 7 th of April 2016 Tubber/Boston/New Quay/Ballyvaughan played a hurling blitz in Inagh. The first match was against Inagh/Kilamona. Unfortunately we lost. The weather was very bad so we let in a few easy goals. The score was 1 goal 2 points to 6 goals 7 points. The next game was against Inis Beag and we played very well. We won by 1 point. The score at the end was 2 goals 1 point to 2 goals. On 27 th of May 2016 the team played a Hurling Blitz. The first game was against Kilnaboy. The scores were level at the end of the match, 1 goal and 4 points apiece. Both teams played very well. The second match was also very close. It was against Connolly. Unfortunately we lost by two points. At the end Pappy Taaffe had a close up free, which if it went in, would have won the match for us. Unfortunately it was saved. The score at the end was 1 goal 4 points to 1 goal 6 points. We would like to thank the parents who supported us, all the teachers who let us go to the matches and Pat Taaffe and Noel Clancy for being our coaches. Our last swimming class at the start of this term. Great progress was made by everyone. A big THANK YOU to Eileen for coaching us in Basketball all year and also to Bernard for all the chess lessons. We really enjoyed them!
SPORTING NEWS Girls Football by Sinéad O Dea A Triumph of All Sorts by Sara Shields On the 9 th of June the Girls football team played two matches against Lisdoonvarna and Lahinch in Ballyvaughan. We won the first match against Lahinch Sadly we lost the second to Lisdoon At the end of the afternoon all three teams had won one match and lost one. On the 16 th of June we met again in the Kilfenora GAA grounds to replay the matches. We played great games winning our two matches comfortably and were very happy to be in the final. In the final we played Doonbeg. We played skilfully but unfortunately lost by 3 points. The score was to Doonbeg. Lisa Shields got all our scores. It was great to see everyone play and in the end we had a great day. We would like to thank our coaches Múinteoir Mary and Annie Nolan. Boys Football by Paddy Nolan During the months of May and June we joined with Carron, Ballyvaughan and Fanore schools for the football leagues. We were in a group with Kilkee, Kilfenora, Liscannor and Clouna/Furglan. First we played Kilkee and we won as a result of a goal from a free kick that Lorcan Doolin from Ballyvaughan scored. The second game we played was against Kilfenora. Sadly we lost that game. Then we played Liscannor and although we didn t start that well and were The senior room performed a play on 1916 on the 14 th of April It was called A triumph of All Sorts We practiced for 2 months. The play was about the 1916 rising. The play began with the Narrators explaining 1916 and afterwards, there was a funeral for O Donovan Rossa. (Chloe, Tommy, Paddy and I brought a board with a dummy on it which was O Donovan Rossa.) Cha and Mixer (Caoimhe and Líle) were two Dublin characters talking about the events. They were talking about going to the races on Easter Monday Mixer wanted to put a shilling on a horse called All Sorts. Cha thought it was a bad idea. When Cha and Mixer left the stage, Padráig Pearse, Tom Clarke, Thomas Mac Donagh, James Connolly and Joseph Plunkett entered to read the Proclamation. Next James Connolly got shot on the leg and he was nursed by Elizabeth O Farrell. Two British Soldiers came on stage and talked about going to France to fight in World War 1. When they left the stage, Grace Gifford entered in her wedding dress and veil, with a priest. Two British Soldiers brought in Joseph Plunkett. Joseph and Grace got married and afterwards the two British Soldiers brought Joseph out and then the British shot him dead 16 hours after his wedding. At the end of the play we all went on stage and bowed.
Holy Communion Science Day at Bishop s Quarter Beach by Chloe Fahy This year s Holy Communion girls Hannah, Miriam and Sarah Anne were joined by Seán on 22nd May in a lovely mass at New Quay. Congratulations to Mia Farrell who was highly commended in the Blue Flag Art Competition held by Clare County Council Environmental Section. She was awarded a prize at the school. Well done Mia! On the 17 th of June we went to Bishops Quarter beach on a Science day. We went with the Burren Outdoor Education Centre. The weather was cold and windy. When we arrived at Bishops Quarter we were split into two groups: the older classroom and the younger classroom. Our first port of call was the tent which the BOEC had pitched on the beach. We left our bags there. The older group started off by going down to the shore to look at the rock pools, where we found butterfish, blenny, starfish and lots of crabs, while the smaller classes did a treasure hunt. Then we swapped over. When we finished that we had lunch in the tent. After lunch we did some orienteering and we finished off with some crab fishing. We caught the crabs with some cardboard, string, sausages and hairnets. We all had a great time.
Confirmation Class 2016 Fun in Fanore with BOEC On our last week of school we were treated to a day at the beach surfing courtesy of BOEC with tutors Jess Buckley and Ger Cullen. We had a great time splashing in the waves. Thanks to Jess for organising it!! This year 5th & 6th Class from Carron and New Quay were confirmed together in St. Colman s Church, New Quay on 19th May. A lovely ceremony with siniging and music performed by students past and present. Artwork by the students decorated the walls of the church and everyone looked beautiful in their lovely outfits. 6 SCHOOL TOURS Junior Room Tour by Rachel Daly On Tuesday the 21 st of June the Junior room went on their school tour to Turoe Pet farm in Loughrea, County Galway. At Turoe Pet farm they have a huge pet farm, 2 large indoor play areas, Jungle Town and Inflatable City. The most popular animals are peacocks, cows, rabbits, ponies, pigs, donkeys, goats and sheep. When they arrived the Juniors went on a walk around to see the animals followed by some playtime in the outdoor playground. At around 11:30 they went inside to eat their lunch and play in the indoor soft area called Jungle Town. After that they went to Inflatable City which is a massive bouncy castle. As they were so good and well behaved they all got a delicious ice-cream. They all had a fabulous day and would love to go again. A big THANK YOU to the Parents Committee for Funding this year s tours!! We really enjoyed them! Senior Room Tour On Monday the 13 th of June the senior classroom went to the Kingfisher Club NUI Galway. Sinéad came on the school tour even though she was unable to do most of the activities because of her broken leg. In the Kingfisher Club there are a few small rooms and one huge room reserved for Lets Go Summer Camp, which we went to. Let s Go Summer Camp is an activity packed camp. There are lots of bouncy castles with different activities on them. First of all we were partnered with a school from Portumna. Our first activity was a water bed bouncy castle activity. We wore helmets and tried to walk on the water bed. Then we went upstairs to do some cup stacking. Sinéad was able to do this activity. First, we stacked three cups, then we stacked six cups. We also went in a disco bouncy castle where you got to dance to music. Next we went in a zorbie and got pushed down a slide. It was so fun and I think it was the best activity. We also went on a bouncy castle slide where we raced against Portumna. We won the race but just by five seconds. We went on an obstacle course bouncy castle and raced against Portumna. Again New Quay School won. We went on a climbing wall where they set you three levels to try to get to. We also went on roller racers and were put into teams and had to race against each other. We went on a wrecking ball bouncy castle where four people stand on cubes and hit one big ball at each other. We also went on a wobbly ladder bouncy castle where you try and get to the top of the ladder. We played a memory game where you have to get from the start to the finish of a twister board. We had so much fun and to top it all off we got to go to Subway after our school tour. by Caoimhe Kerin
