2 WELCOME! We are glad that you have chosen to become a member of the resurrection of the Cherry Hill West Marching Band. For many years the West Marching Band had a tradition of excellence and was a wellrespected member of the marching band community. As of 2018 we begin to take it back to that level. As with any endeavor one is beginning, it will be a step-by-step process and will take time. We have an excellent staff in place with a lot of years of experience and a lot of positive excitement to make this happen. In my first seven years at West we competed regularly and won numerous competitions, consecutive regional titles, and two United States Scholastic Band Association Group Championships. We are not ready for that, yet, but this season is a step in the right direction. We have a lot of things planned for the year along with putting a show together on the field for the home games at West. We want to have fun, but at the same time, work hard to be the best we can be. We want to have some social events that will not only be for the students, but we want to include parents, as well. We want to get the parents involved in this program, as back when we were competing we had a very strong parent force that helped out in numerous ways. It was a family, and I believe that is important and something I would like us to become. We need a parent presence at the games to cheer us on. Kids on the field feed off that energy and perform better. Looking forward to a great season and please, get involved, come to the games, and help make this a great experience for everyone. You will have a calendar with all the dates on it. However, we do realize that there are times where circumstances may not allow for that. All we ask is that you communicate this to us. You can text via the REMIND system, e- mail any of the staff members, or call and leave a message on the band office voic ( x1340). When at West, you are to remain in the band room area and should not wander the school. When at games you are expected to stay in the stands with the group. There will be a break usually during the 3 rd quarter after we have performed the halftime show (will be a halftime break at the first game of the year). You are responsible for your instrument or the school instrument/equipment that you are using.

EAST/WEST GAME (We are away but it is still played here) SPECIAL EVENTS WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 3 RD - PARENT PREVIEW 7:30 PM Get your first glimpse of the entire show performed! FRIDAY OCTOBER 5 TH - STUDENT/PARENT TAILGATE BEFORE THE GAME! Then stay for the game and cheer the band on for its first full performance on the field! FRIDAY OCTOBER 12 TH - MIDDLE SCHOOL NIGHT/SENIOR NIGHT Middle school students from Carusi and Rosa will join us to play in the stands. The 2019 Senior members of the group will be recognized either pre-game or at halftime. THURSDAY NOVEMBER 29 TH - END OF SEASON POT LUCK DINNER 6PM - West Cafeteria (For students AND parents) OTHER POSSIBLE SOCIAL EVENTS (bowling night, etc. to be scheduled) OUTFIT REQUIREMENTS We unfortunately do not have actual band uniforms. Long story and would take up too much ink! We have been wearing PEP BAND hoodies the past few years. Working on possible ideas, but definitely for now: ALL INSTRUMENTALISTS AND DRUMMERS NEED TO HAVE A PAIR OF LONG BLACK PANTS (not jeans) AND BLACK SHOES/SOCKS. We need to have everyone looking the same. ALL COLOR GUARD MEMBERS will be wearing LONG BLACK LEGGINGS and black sneakers/black hosiery (no skin showing). Try to get these sneakers from Amazon (city sneaks Women's Bal Sneaker - $15.99) so we can all be as uniform as possible. You will be responsible for acquiring these items. Stay tuned for the top it s gonna be awesome!

5 CALENDAR Attached to the end of this handbook is the calendar of practices, performances, and events. Please add it to your home calendars and post it so you have the dates. A marching band show can only really work properly when EVERY student is there doing their part. PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT so we need everyone there all the time to make this work! Parents please make every effort to attend the performances and all of the student/parent events. We, and your kids, love when you take part in these activities. Want to get an idea of the best of the marching world? Check out this website and then go on YouTube and check out some of the Drum Corps that tour and compete during the summer and are the pros of the marching activity. It is very impressive and quite entertaining. BAND CAMP During the week of Band Camp, we will get to know one another and learn how to work together as a group and family. We will be learning the music for the show, the music for the stands, learning basic marching techniques, and begin to put it all together to form our field show that will be performing. It is important that the students wear comfortable clothes, stay hydrated, bring food for dinner and snacks if they need them, etc. They can bring water bottles as we have a water bottle filling fountain just outside the band room near the cafeteria. We will be utilizing indoor and outdoor activities and SNEAKERS are really a must as far as marching goes. We need to get a lot done(and WILL HAVE A BRUSH UP REHEARSAL ON WED(8/29) and will kick in right away on Wednesday 9/5) as we have a home football game the first Friday of school on 9/7. SCHOOL WORK/GRADES Students in marching band fall under the same blanket as those of the West Athletes and all other after school activities. Grades are expected to be kept up at all times during the season. Please budget your time appropriately because school and grades are ALWAYS the number one priority. On the night of practices or performances get your work done right after school if possible so you don t have a lot to worry about once you get home and are not up late. You need your rest too! The next page is a contract for the student and parent to sign(doubles as a permission form for participation in the activity. Please read, sign, and return as soon as possible. Again, looking forward to a great year as we begin the rebuild of the WEST MARCHING BAND!

6 CHERRY HILL WEST MARCHING BAND CONTRACT I, (print name), am glad and excited to become a member of the Cherry Hill West Marching Band and will do my best to make this group as great as it can be. I will make the best effort possible to make all practices and performances and work hard to learn music, drill, routines, etc. so that we have phenomenal performances each time we have one. Most importantly I will will work well with my band mates to achieve all of our goals. And even more importantly, I will HAVE FUN doing it! I will also make absolute sure I keep my grades up! Student Signature I give my permission for my son/daughter to participate in the West Marching Band and will make every effort to assure they are at all practices and performances. I will do my best to get involved and at the very least, come out to support the group at performances as well as taking part in student/parent activities. I will make sure that my child keeps their grades up too!
