1 British Theatre Dance Association GRADE 2 CLASSICAL BALLET The General Graded Examinations up to and including Grade 5 are designed to develop and establish a firm Classical Ballet Technique. Each Grade progresses onto the next and becomes more detailed, complex and demanding as each level is achieved. Each exercise is written in detail giving both timing and direction and candidates should be seen to be working with correct stance, placement, alignment and musicality. Classical Technique will strengthen as the candidate progresses through the grades and should be secure and established when the candidate has completed the Grade 5 examination.
2 DRESS CODE Smart presentation is important to all candidates entering BTDA examinations; the following dress code should be applied for Classical Ballet examinations: BTDA does not advocate colour or style of examination dress but it expects candidates to have uniformity throughout the school. No jewellery, nail polish or make up is to be worn for examinations included in this programme of study. It is recommended that fringes are taken back and away from the face. CLASSICAL GROOMING IS REQUIRED Female candidates Classical leotard, classical tights. A classical ballet shoe must be worn. Tapes/ribbons can be worn but not compulsory at this level. If ribbons are worn, they must be secure and not come undone during the examination. Hair must be neatly groomed, with fringes taken away and off the face. Male candidates Shorts/tights and T-shirt/leotard. The colour and texture is teachers choice. It is recommended that tights are worn by older candidates A classical ballet shoe must be worn Hair must be neatly groomed LEVEL 1 TECHNICAL CRITERIA: Examiners will expect LEVEL 1 candidates to demonstrate BASIC dance skills, understanding of the required technique and artistry in the performance as per the Assessment Criteria TECHNICAL GUIDANCE Technical notes as for Grade 1 with the following progression: Full Pliés flowing and continuous passing and returning through the demi- plié position Good length of leg, fully extended and stretched during tendus and battements Use of the foot during tendus, fondus and rises with the turn-out maintained during demi-pointe work 45 minimum height on Grands Battements and arabesque lines with a sustained turn-out on the supporting leg Sustained turn-out during the steps section
