1 DVD Submission Note to all applicants: The information listed below relates to those applying for the following genres: Cecchetti Classical Ballet, Imperial Classical Ballet, Modern Theatre Dance, South Asian Dance and Tap Dance. This is not applicable to those applying for Classical Greek Dance and National Dance. For applicants on the Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy Programme who do not currently hold their Advanced 1 examination in their chosen genre from the ISTD, or other accredited dance awarding bodies (British Ballet Organization, British Theatre Dance Association, Royal Academy of Dance), it is a requirement to provide evidence of their current level of dance skill in their chosen genre. The DVD demonstration will allow the selection panel to ascertain through the applicant s personal performance that his/her knowledge and understanding of the relevant dance technique and vocabulary is sufficient to enable him/her to reach Advanced 1 level. Please note that the submission of this DVD does not exempt the applicant from taking the Level 4 Vocational Graded Examination in Dance Advanced 1. It is a requirement to achieve this examination as part of the programme. As with other ISTD examinations, there is a process of reasonable adjustments to the examination for learners where required. Your DVD submission must follow the guidelines listed below: Maximum length of submission: o 30 mins for the following genres: Modern Theatre Dance, South Asian Dance, Tap Dance; o 45 mins for the following genres: Cecchetti Classical Ballet, Imperial Classical Ballet; A short introduction stating your name and the genre you are applying for must be included at the beginning of your submission; The DVD must be clearly labelled with your name; The DVD must be submitted in the following formats: DVD+/-R (region 2 compatible) it must not be re-writable so that it cannot be altered or overwritten; Practice clothes should be worn to allow the selection panel to see your full movement range. 3 MODERN THEATRE DANCE 1. Warm-up (approximately 2 minutes) To include full body swings, relaxations forwards, sideways and backwards, pliés, use of isolations and a short section to include tendus and foot warm-ups with use of port de bras. 2. Floor Limbering To include front and side kicks, abdominal work, spine loosening and hip loosening, demonstrating an awareness of the principles of rhythmical limbering and breath control. 3. Jazz Adage To include arabesque line and developpé to 2 nd with tilt, demonstrating the dancer s ability to use balance and control during sustained and lifted leg work, secure transference of weight and good alignment. 4. Turns To include a combination of turns from the corner and jazz pirouettes, inwards and outwards at high and low levels. 5. Kicks A simple sequence to include front, side and back kicks in any setting with use of port de bras. 6. Foot warm-up A short elevated foot warm-up. 7. Jumps and leaps A range of leaps from the corner to include at least one forward and one side leap. 8. Amalgamations 2 short (1 minute each) amalgamations to show contrast in style: a) up-tempo jazz style b) lyrical/contemporary/theatre style ISTD. Version 2. June
4 TAP DANCE 1. Warm-up To include: a) 3 beat and progressive shuffles; b) A range of movements to create relaxation and mobility in the knees and ankles; c) Basic technical steps, demonstrated with ease and coordination in the body and arms. 2. Pick ups An exercise to include pull-backs, ripples and maxi fords to show the sustained elevation and control needed for pick ups from either the flat feet or the balls of the feet. 3. Closework A sixteen bar sequence to be performed unaccompanied or to percussive music. This could be arranged as time steps or a turning step. 4. Rhythmic Response As follows: a) The dancer s own choice of eight bars of rhythm, which should include syncopation, sixteenth notes and show an awareness of musical phrasing and use of tacit; b) This should then be choreographed to demonstrate tonal quality in the beating and rhythmic fluidity in both the footwork and use of the body and arms. 5. Amalgamation (up to 2 minutes in length) A piece of choreography in which the choice of music and development of technical requirements should be an important factor. The performance should be presented with rhythmic assurance and an appropriate sense of style and presentation. 6. Cool down ISTD. Version 2. June
