1 PRESENTED BY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH YEP! SUMMER SCHOOL NZDC through its Youth Engagement Programme (YEP!) brings you another unique learning experience featuring guest international artists from Chicago-based Lucky Plush Productions physical theatre company and NZ graduate choreographers passionate about youth. MONDAY 28 JANUARY FRIDAY 1 FEBRUARY 2013 THE DANCE UNITEC GATE 1, CARRINGTON ROAD, AUCKLAND

2 WORKSHOP DETAILS The New Zealand Dance Company is hosting an international exchange with Chicago based dance theatre company Lucky Plush Productions, suitable for dancers 13 yrs old and over. The workshop is suitable for those with training in ballet, contemporary or jazz, and also street dancers keen to expand their movement vocabulary. This Youth Summer School comprises a morning technique class by the Lucky Plush company members, followed by rehearsals of a contemporary choreographic development process led by a graduate choreographer passionate about working with youth. This summer school is ideal for those wanting to experience international technique teaching in contemporary and jazz and will enhance skills in improvisation, acting technique, presentation and character development. The emphasis is on a fun and supportive learning environment, choreographic exploration and building towards a showing of work at the end of the workshop. LUCKY PLUSH PRODUCTIONS Lucky Plush Productions is a Chicago-based dance theatre company that devises work with a focus on strong ensembles, evocative choreography, integrated technology, and bold content. Led by founder and Artistic Director Julia Rhoads, the company is known for its witty commentary on contemporary culture and artful integration of dance, theatre, and visual design. Lucky Plush s work supports an immediacy of presence for the performers in realtime with the audience, often provoking humour in surprising ways. The Chicago Tribune referred to Lucky Plush's recent work as "A terrific odyssey, full of amusing, varied and tireless dancing by a troupe of dancers who ably double a comics." Since founding in 1999, Lucky Plush has premiered over 30 original works including performance installations, two dance films, and ten evening-length productions. Their touring company is comprised of dedicated educators who teach classes that move easily between dance and theatre forms. In workshops and classes with university students, professional artists, youth groups, and community groups, Lucky Plush generously shares its techniques, core values and creative inquiries. YEP! 3 BIOGRAPHIES JULIA RHOADS is choreographer and founding Artistic Director of Chicagobased Lucky Plush Productions. As well as independent commissions for other Dance Companies she has also choreographed for theatre for which she has received numerous awards. In 2010, she was named one of DanceMagazine s 25 to Watch and has been included in NewCity s feature The Players: The 50 people who really perform for Chicago in 2010 and Julia is formerly a company member of the San Francisco Ballet and collaborating ensemble member of XSIGHT! Performance Group. She is currently the Theatre and Performance Studies Dance Advisor at University of Chicago, and part-time faculty in the theatre department at Columbia College Chicago. Julia's classes draw upon extensive training and professional experience in diverse dance forms, improvisation, and choreography. She approaches every class as a laboratory where connections between movement, ideas, and performance skills are fostered, and she facilitates a collaborative environment that is both rigorous and playful. In technique classes, Julia emphasizes moving with weight, momentum, and dynamics, as opposed to prioritizing codified positions, and she helps students to pinpoint how movements are initiated, sequenced, and can be executed more efficiently. An attention to presence underpins all of Julia's classes. She believes that being available to authentic experiences refines intuition and supports embodied learning. LESLIE BUXBAUM DANZIG is a director, teacher and curator. She co-founded the Chicago-based physical theatre company 500 Clown in 2001, touring regularly throughout the US. Leslie received her BA from Brown University and PhD in Performance Studies at Northwestern University, and trained in physical theatre and clown with Jacques Lecoq, Philippe Gaulier and Ronlin Foreman. For the past decade she has taught theatre and performance courses at High School and University level in Chicago as well as workshops in tandem with touring productions. She is currently Programme Curator at the Gray Centre for Arts and Inquiry, University of Chicago, and will direct Redmoon s The Elephant and the Whale, commissioned by Chicago Children s Theatre in Spring Leslie's classes draw from her training in acting at HB Studios (NYC), physical theatre at Ecole Jacques Lecoq (Paris), and clown with Philippe Gaulier (London) and Ronlin Foreman (Dell'Arte, California). As a theatre educator, she primarily focuses on approaches to devising physical theatre, which incorporate viewpoints, improvisation, clowning, and acting techniques, as well as strategies for harnessing 'play' in the making of theatre. FRANCISCO AVINA is a collaborating ensemble member with Lucky Plush Productions and a dancer with Ron De Jesus Dance. Besides appearing with numerous prestigious dance companies during his career Francisco has also danced in TV and film projects and appeared in a number of music videos as well as creating choreography for major Fashion Shows and Events. In Mexico City he choreographed for TV Azteca Disney s High School Musical La Seleccion and "Yo Mexico," a multimedia production with over 350 dancers, aerialists, and musicians that celebrated the bicentennial anniversary of Mexico's independence. His choreography has won him a national choreography competition for his work with Hubbard Street 2 and recently Francisco received the Outstanding Choreography Award at the Youth America Grand Prix competition. Francisco is also the resident choreographer for Digital 9 in Shibuya, Tokyo. As a dance educator Francisco draws from his diverse dance career, which has been greatly influenced by hip hop, jazz, ballet, and contemporary dance. Francisco creates a uniquely hybrid movement vocabulary that is both challenging and sophisticated in its combination of stylistic forms.

4 ADRIAN DANZIG has recently appeared in various guises on the Chicago Stage and regularly performs the shows in the 500 Clown touring repertoire. He has led workshops in physical theatre all around the country, and internationally for the past ten years. He was an early Neo-futurist and a founding member of Redmoon Theatre, Hubinspoke Theatre and is the founding Producing Artistic Director of 500 Clown. He graduated from NYC s High School of Performing Arts, received his BA from Oberlin College and his MFA from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago. He has studied clown with Ctibor Turba, Philippe Gaulier, Ronlin Foreman, Dominique Jando, Els Comediants, David Shiner, Avner the Eccentric and was a clown with Big Apple Circus Clown Care for seven years. He is currently developing a book on physical theatre with support from the Raven Foundation. Adrian teaches from the perspective of advanced student, rather than a master transmitting information. He believes the best work is somewhere in the future and good teaching will cultivate it, unlock it and support it. BENJAMIN WARDELL started dancing at age ten in Memphis, TN. His professional career began with The Cincinnati Ballet, where he achieved the rank of soloist. From there he joined Alonzo King's LINES Ballet in San Francisco and began to explore photography and videography, as well as the administrative aspects of arts management. In 2007 he joined Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and after four years left to pursue life as a freelance multimedia artist. In addition to being an ensemble member with Lucky Plush Productions, Ben is a member of Aszure Barton and Artists, and an independent teacher, photographer, videographer, and performer. Benjamin is also a répétiteur for Alejandro Cerrudo, resident choreographer for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and was approved by Jiří Kylian to set excerpts of his work 27'52" on Juilliard in May of Benjamin's teaching focuses on a logical approach to technique, emphasizing a view of the body as an object of physics. His classwork prioritizes intentional placement of the pelvis for balance and stability through muscular expanse. He believes the standards of various dance techniques find their greatest value as mirrors for each student to learn their unique body. To him, the pursuit of technique is ultimately a means to the end of personal expression, and he strives to remind students that, when properly approached, technical prowess is synonymous with artistic freedom. MEGHANN WILKINSON is a graduate of Northwestern University and has been a collaborating ensemble member with Lucky Plush Productions since She is a former company member of Mordine and Company Dance Theatre and has appeared in Chicago with Smith/Wymore Disappearing Acts, Cie Felix Ruckert, and Peter Carpenter Performance Project. She is on the dance and theatre faculty at Columbia College, Chicago, and has taught at Northwestern University, Dance Centre Evanston, and Visceral Dance Chicago. Drawn to performance work that allows for humour and relies on being in the moment, Meghann strives to create a class environment that promotes mindfulness and allows for play. She prioritizes musicality and anatomical efficiency and uses a dynamic voice and imagery to encourage students to embody, not imitate, each experience.
