3 The Academy s mission is to provide a place for dedicated, passionate and goal-oriented students to focus and pursue their art. Expert instructors will build a path for students to exceed and excel artistically and intellectually. The Academy will provide each student, ages 14 19, with extraordinary dance training, self-discipline and a professional attitude to take into the consecutive phases of their dance education and career paths. THE ACADEMY WILL SUPPORT EACH STUDENT S DANCE AND ACADEMIC EDUCATION BY PROVIDING THE BALANCE NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS IN EACH ENDEAVOR. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, THE ACADEMY WILL PROVIDE: Dance instruction coordinated and taught by dancers with strong professional dance and teaching experience who are passionate about sharing their expertise and are capable of effectively challenging driven students. A nine month (approximately September May), full day* (8:00 am 4:00 pm) program will advance students in ballet/pointe, modern, jazz, and contemporary technique as well as expose dancers to various other art forms throughout the year. Students will work as a company on choreography and performance repertoire. Academic requirements will be met with the help of each student s school district s stipulations and/or through the student s on-line choice. A dedicated, monitored study room with desks and Wi-Fi is available to students during their academic time. Parents have the option for the student to return home or stay at the studio during academic time. Parents will have an open line of communication with the study room monitor and with each of the dance teachers. Wellness education (nutrition classes, muscular/skeletal awareness, weekly conditioning) and access to the on-site Physical Therapist. Tuition includes three personal PT consultations per school year. A personalized dance education plan and three meetings with the Education Director to analyze goals and progression in the program (prior spring, mid-year and end-of-year). Performing opportunities at The Academy include an informal fall parent showcase, DDC&G s annual production of The Nutcracker, the Centre s March Company Performance and a dedicated spring concert for Academy students. Academy costumes and rentals are included in tuition. Annual field trips will include activities such as a day of dance with the local collegiate dance departments, company shadowing with local professional companies, local festivals and arts events and one out-of-town dance experience (ie: Chicago; NY). Costs for travel are additional. Included with tuition is audition preparation and support for each student s summer intensive training and college and/or company auditions. (Please note: This does not include individual photos or videos). Academy students are highly encouraged to continue their dance instruction at their home studio during the evenings and weekends. *A partial day option is also available. 3
4 The Students Eligible students for The Academy are ages 14 19* who have an aspiration to dance at a pre-professional level and have goals for acceptance into high-caliber college dance departments (ballet or modern based) or noteworthy pre-professional programs and apprenticeships around the country. Students must be local or be willing make separate boarding and transportation plans. MOVEMENT REQUIREMENTS Students must have significant dance experience coming into the program and demonstrate a passionate desire to learn in a challenging environment with high expectations. Students must currently be training en pointe and have at least intermediate training in jazz and modern. Exceptions may be made for the right student with a varied background. Each student s path will be individualized according to their personal goals; for example, those with ballet based objectives will have different goals than those with modern-based objectives. One-on-one meetings with the Education Director and Academy teachers will aid in pursuing these goals. The Academy is structured to be an intensive addition to the student s overall dance training. Continued instruction at the student s home studio in the evenings and weekends is highly encouraged. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS A letter of intent as well as a professional recommendation letter from a current or former dance teacher is required upon application. The required annual audition will determine each student s technical readiness for the program and aid in level placement and movement goals. ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS Students must maintain 95% attendance throughout the program and maintain a 2.7 GPA academically. Students in jeopardy of either of these baseline requirements will be given a four week notice and personal plan for improvement before dismissal from the program. Student Handbooks and an annual calendar will be distributed during individual baseline meetings in May. Students participating in The Academy must make arrangements with their school district and/or high school to meet the allotted academy schedule or be prepared to transfer their academic studies on-line.* A dedicated, monitored study room with desks and Wi-Fi is available to students during their academic time. Parents have the option for the student to return home or stay at the studio during academic time.*an on-line school representative will be at the informational parent meetings. * Students who have graduated from high school are exempt from academic requirements.
