9 Newsletter Hope April 2019 SAY IT: Believing that something good can come out of something bad. KNOW IT: ASK A KID: Can you think of a time when something bad happened to you or someone you love? How did you react? Were you able to think positively and have hope? Who is someone that you know who is a hopeful person? What are some things that they do or say that suggest they have hope? ASK A GROWN UP: Describe a time when it was difficult to believe that something good was going to come out of something bad. Is it hard to keep hope sometimes? How do you keep a positive attitude when bad things happen? How does it feel to believe something good can come out of something bad? SEE IT: Watch this short video about Ruby Bridges, a six year old African-American girl who integrated a public school in New Orleans in November of Not only does this video speak to her immense bravery, but also to the hope of the African-American community that one day their children would be able to be fully integrated into society and be treated equally. This was certainly a time when people believed that something good could come of something bad. pbs.org/wnet/african-americans-many-rivers-to-cross/video/ruby-bridges-goes-to-school/ BE IT: This month, volunteer at your nearest Red Cross. This nonprofit organization helps individuals and families affected by disasters such as fires and hurricanes. There are many ways to volunteer including donating blood or assisting with a blood drive, installing free smoke alarms and helping out after a disaster strikes. Your family will not only serve as a source of hope for people, but you may also witness hope in the people that you serve. CoreEssentials.org 2018/2019 CORE ESSENTIALS, INC. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

Have conversation while you eat together. Bed Time: Be a counselor. Strengthen your relationship at the end of every day with heartfelt conversations about feelings. So don t miss it. 13 The Role of Parents in an Emergency Parent Responsibilities During a School Emergency and Reunification After a School Emergency In a school emergency, the first instinct as a parent is to pick up the telephone and start calling the school or to rush up to the school and get your child/children. The truth is, this only complicates matters from a safety and security standpoint. Parents too close to an incident often hinder the rescue attempts of first responders on the scene. The best action parents can take in an emergency is to stay close to their phone/ and to monitor the district website for regular updates. School Emergency Response Protocols When and Why Students and Staff are asked to Lockout, Lockdown, Shelter or Evacuate A school crisis can take on a number of forms including an environmental event, such as a chemical spill or gas leak; a weather emergency, such as a tornado warning; or an intruder in or near the school. The nature of a school crisis dictates whether school officials will put in place a lockout, lockdown, shelter, evacuation or any combination of these protocols, as a means to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff Jones Road Houston, Texas Cypress-Fairbanks ISD School Emergency Information Guide CFISD For Parents and Guardians

14 Safety Terms and Procedures In the event of an emergency at your child s school, it is important to know these terms: LOCKOUT "Secure the Perimeter" This occurs when there is criminal activity in the community or an unsafe situation outside of the school. Staff will secure the exterior doors and monitor the situation, preventing any unauthorized visitors into the school. Students will continue with school activities and will not be permitted outside until the all-clear announcement is made. LOCKDOWN "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight" A lockdown takes place if an internal threat is identified at the school. All school doors are locked, and students are confined to classrooms. No entry into or exit from the school will be allowed until an all-clear announcement is made. For their safety, students will NOT be released during a lockdown. How will I be reunited with my child? Parents and/or guardians will be directed by school or public officials to their child s specific location via the district website or enews alerts. Students will be released ONLY to parents and/or guardians who are documented as emergency contacts and who present a valid government issued picture ID such as a driver s license, military ID or passport. The reunification process can be timeconsuming so parents are urged to be patient. In Case of a School Emergency Although your first reaction might be to call or rush to your child s school, please follow the tips listed below: DO monitor the district website and watch for enews alerts. DO rely only on official communication from school or public safety officials. DO listen for official information regarding reunification with your child. SHELTER "For a Hazard Using a Safety Strategy" Students take shelter in designated areas to protect themselves from hazardous materials or severe weather. No entry into or exit from the school will be allowed until an all-clear announcement is made. Students will NOT be released during shelter-in-place. EVACUATE / REUNIFY In the event of certain building emergencies, students will be relocated to an evacuation assembly area. The district will follow established procedures when releasing students to any parent/guardian. Students will only be released to a parent/ guardian who presents a valid government issued photo identification. How can you help? Ensure that your child s demographic and emergency contact information is accurate and current. The district uses the district website, enews alerts and/or mass phone calls to notify parents of inclement weather and other emergencies. Become familiar with your school s emergency communication procedures. Each school is committed to providing accurate and timely information in the event of an emergency. DO NOT call or rush to your child s school. Your presence could interfere with emergency responders. DO NOT phone your child or school. Staff and students are discouraged from using cell phone communication for safety reasons.
