2 Warner Library's Fall Book Fair Warner Library s Fall Book Fair is Coming! Warner library s fall book fair is scheduled October 4 th - 11 th (Thursday-Thursday). This is a perfect time to pick up new titles for your children. Also, it s not too early to think about gift giving! Along with favorite series and authors, you will find titles from Cy-Fair s Horned Toad Tale Award list (a reading list that is promoted with 3-5 graders), and much more! Each class will have a scheduled time to come during the week. The schedule and the book fair flyer will be sent home the week before the fair begins. Please look over the flyer with your children to get an idea of titles offered, but there are also many other titles available. Prices are on the flyer as well (don t forget to include tax!). Students will preview the book fair and make a list of titles (with prices) of the books they are interested in. Then, they will get a chance to come another day to shop. Students must come with money on their class s scheduled day if they wish to make purchases. The book fair will be open on Monday, October 8 th (Parent Conference day) from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. This is a great time to shop with your family and help your children make choices. Parents are also welcome to shop at any time during the week. However, parents will not be allowed to pull children out of class, so please plan to come during your child s scheduled time if you prefer to shop with them. Thanks for your support! The proceeds from this fair will go directly to improving the library for all our students. Warner SPIRIT Program We have SPIRIT, how 'bout you? This is the 4th year for the Warner Spirit Program and we are bringing back Warner Spirit Tickets!! How it will work: Warner Spirit Day will be EVERY FRIDAY. Students will show their Warner Spirit by wearing a Warner shirt. The shirt can be one of the fantastic new shirts for the school year or it can be one from the past. The only catch, it MUST say WARNER for the student to receive a ticket. Volunteers will only be coming in one Friday a month to hand out tickets. To make sure your child receives a ticket - wear a spirit shirt EVERY FRIDAY! You won t know which Friday volunteers will be here to give out tickets. ALL tickets will be collected and held for a school wide drawing in December. We will have 2 prizes that will be really nice and well worth it. In January, we will start over and have another drawing at the end of May with just one awesome prize! Prizes will be announced for each semester soon. So, get ready to show your Warner Spirit this year! You can purchase a Warner Spirit Shirt at the first Spirit Cart on Friday, September 14 th! Thank you for your support of the Warner Elementary PTO. Individual Pictures Individual pictures will take place on Friday, October 5, All money is due prior to your child s picture being taken. Please make your check payable to Lifetouch. If paying by cash, please send the exact amount. No change is available. Forms will be coming home soon! Visiting and Volunteering at Warner Elementary Check in - When you arrive on campus, please enter the main doors and check in at the front desk. To enter the building, please press the doorbell and wait for the doors to be unlocked. To enter the main lobby and receptionist area, you must also wait for the glass double doors to be unlocked. Once at the front desk, check in. Please let the staff know if you are visiting or volunteering. To enter the building, you will need to show your driver s license, sign the log book and identify where in the building you will be going. One of the receptionists will enter you in the system and print out a sticker. From there, please exit out of the main lobby, enter the main entry hallway, wait for the doors to unlock, and then only proceed to the area that you identified. Once you finish in that area and need to go to another area, you MUST check back with one of the receptionists. When leaving Warner, return to the front desk sign out of the log book and return the sticker to the receptionist on your way out of the main doors. Thank you in advance for following these rules. This is not only for the safety of the students, but also for you. It allows the campus personnel to know who is in the building in case of an emergency. Logging Volunteer Hours Volunteering at Warner, as well as outside of the school counts. Please be sure to log the hours you do not work on campus. Once a volunteer account has been created through CFISD, the Warner staff can sign you into the building as a volunteer and there is no need to log those hours manually. If you created a volunteer account during the school year, you do not need to create a new one. To set up a volunteer account with CFISD, click here: (please be sure the account name matches your identification) Once you have an account, go here to view accrued hours and log hours: Warner PTO Volunteer Dress Code The Warner Elementary staff must follow a dress code. All volunteers, who are on campus working, should follow a similar dress code. Our volunteers are a direct representation of Warner Elementary. Failure to follow the dress code will result in not being able to volunteer during the school day. Things to Consider: Flip flops should be nice and presentable Leggings should have an overtop at least mid-length Things to Avoid: Low cut and tight fitting tops Tank tops Workout attire pants, tops and shorts

3 Core Essentials This year Warner s character education program, designed for grades K-5 will be based upon the values created by The Core Essentials program at coreessentials.org. Each month, a different Core Essential will be emphasized school wide to encourage students to 1) Treat other s right, 2) Make smart decisions, and 3)Maximize their own potential or do their BEST. The students will learn about these skills with their teachers in their classrooms and also within the guidance lessons presented by their counselors. They will hear and see a quote of the week that is related to the skill discussed that month. We will send home information from Core Essentials in the newsletter each month that describes the skill and how you can reinforce them at home. Please see the attached information at the end of the newsletter. The program is designed so that kids will truly know the skills and by the end of each month will be able to SAY it, KNOW it, SEE it, and BE it. The Core Essential for the month of September is Initiative seeing what needs to be done and doing it. Tips from the Clinic Head Lice: It is that time of year when we begin to see a number of cases of head lice. Please take a few moments to check your child s/children s hair. 1. Look for tiny white eggs (nits) on the hair shaft, especially near the nape of the neck and behind the ears. Head lice are small grayish-tan insects without wings. 2. Head lice cannot survive without a human host. They cannot survive on family pets. Choose an effective treatment and use as directed. These are available at any drugstore without a prescription. 3. Vacuum everywhere, soak combs, brushes, etc. in hot water. Bag all stuffed animals in plastic bags, seal and store for 4 weeks. 4. Check heads every day for 2-3 weeks. Regular checking is the best prevention. Tell others when you find a case of lice. Call the school and all close friends. Electronic Communication Please refer to the following guidelines regarding communication: Newsletters and other communiqués will be distributed electronically. If you do not have access to , you may access weekly newsletters by going online to (click on Schools and Facilities, Elementary Schools, Warner, Website, School News. ) Parents will still need to check their child s backpack/binder daily for any graded papers or teacher communication. Additional flyers, etc. that cannot be sent electronically will be sent home on Tuesdays. THANK YOU!! SPRING CREEK BBQ! Warner Spirit Night was a lot of fun and a great success! 5 The Role of Parents in an Emergency Parent Responsibilities During a School Emergency and Reunification After a School Emergency In a school emergency, the first instinct as a parent is to pick up the telephone and start calling the school or to rush up to the school and get your child/children. The truth is, this only complicates matters from a safety and security standpoint. Parents too close to an incident often hinder the rescue attempts of first responders on the scene. The best action parents can take in an emergency is to stay close to their phone/ and to monitor the district website for regular updates. School Emergency Response Protocols When and Why Students and Staff are asked to Lockout, Lockdown, Shelter or Evacuate A school crisis can take on a number of forms including an environmental event, such as a chemical spill or gas leak; a weather emergency, such as a tornado warning; or an intruder in or near the school. The nature of a school crisis dictates whether school officials will put in place a lockout, lockdown, shelter, evacuation or any combination of these protocols, as a means to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff Jones Road Houston, Texas Cypress-Fairbanks ISD School Emergency Information Guide CFISD For Parents and Guardians

6 Safety Terms and Procedures In the event of an emergency at your child s school, it is important to know these terms: LOCKOUT "Secure the Perimeter" This occurs when there is criminal activity in the community or an unsafe situation outside of the school. Staff will secure the exterior doors and monitor the situation, preventing any unauthorized visitors into the school. Students will continue with school activities and will not be permitted outside until the all-clear announcement is made. LOCKDOWN "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight" A lockdown takes place if an internal threat is identified at the school. All school doors are locked, and students are confined to classrooms. No entry into or exit from the school will be allowed until an all-clear announcement is made. For their safety, students will NOT be released during a lockdown. How will I be reunited with my child? Parents and/or guardians will be directed by school or public officials to their child s specific location via the district website or enews alerts. Students will be released ONLY to parents and/or guardians who are documented as emergency contacts and who present a valid government issued picture ID such as a driver s license, military ID or passport. The reunification process can be timeconsuming so parents are urged to be patient. In Case of a School Emergency Although your first reaction might be to call or rush to your child s school, please follow the tips listed below: DO monitor the district website and watch for enews alerts. DO rely only on official communication from school or public safety officials. DO listen for official information regarding reunification with your child. SHELTER "For a Hazard Using a Safety Strategy" Students take shelter in designated areas to protect themselves from hazardous materials or severe weather. No entry into or exit from the school will be allowed until an all-clear announcement is made. Students will NOT be released during shelter-in-place. EVACUATE / REUNIFY In the event of certain building emergencies, students will be relocated to an evacuation assembly area. The district will follow established procedures when releasing students to any parent/guardian. Students will only be released to a parent/ guardian who presents a valid government issued photo identification. How can you help? Ensure that your child s demographic and emergency contact information is accurate and current. The district uses the district website, enews alerts and/or mass phone calls to notify parents of inclement weather and other emergencies. Become familiar with your school s emergency communication procedures. Each school is committed to providing accurate and timely information in the event of an emergency. DO NOT call or rush to your child s school. Your presence could interfere with emergency responders. DO NOT phone your child or school. Staff and students are discouraged from using cell phone communication for safety reasons.
