Students will not be able to try out unless this is completed in full. * TRYOUTS: Thursday May 9 4:30 p.m. Doors will open at 4:00 p.m. to get settled in. Be stretched and ready to begin tryouts by 4:30 p.m. Should the candidate make the Scarlet Line Dance Team, there will be a MANDATORY fitting for the season held the Monday after tryouts directly after school from 3:30-4:30. Please read the entire packet. Do not sign or continue with tryouts if you are not 100% comfortable with the information included. The Springfield High School Scarlet Line program is designed to promote school spirit and to support all athletic teams at SHS. Members of the team are considered leaders of the student body. The way a member conducts him/herself in and out of uniform, in school, on social media and in the community directly reflects not only his/herself, but the entire program, coaches, SHS athletics and Springfield High School. The importance of making the commitment to the Scarlet Line Dance Team cannot be overemphasized. Members must perform at ALL home football and basketball games. The season begins after tryouts and ends at the conclusion of basketball season. It is a long season with various responsibilities that must be fulfilled to have a successful experience for all involved. These responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) treating all teammates, coaches, teachers, administrators, and spectators with respect, attending all practices, games and performance events, maintaining eligibility, and meeting the established financial obligations. Members are also expected to be in good health and physically able to maintain the demands of the Scarlet Line Dance Team. Every squad member is expected to participate at every practice and every game. Scheduled performances and/or volunteer events are mandatory and include: NDA Summer
Camp, Freshman Forward, football and basketball games, our annual youth dance clinic, SHS Pep Rallies, etc. Additional commitments are added at the discretion of the coach. Practices will begin in June after District 186 graduation. All dancers are required to attend summer practices during the week between the hours of 12:00pm-2:00pm. During the school year, practices will take place after school from 3:30pm 5:30pm Tuesday and Thursday. This is subject to change during busy times such as Homecoming, City Tournament, etc. Dancers will be informed of these changes in advance. It is important that your dancer is willing to make the time commitment required to be a Scarlet Line Dancer. Inappropriate behavior, failure to adhere to the District 186 Drug & Alcohol Policy, District 186 ineligibility, failure to meet the financial obligations, etc. will result in a meeting with coach and administration to discuss further action. If a dancer cannot maintain the expectations set forth by the team and the schedule, he/she will be released from the team. In an attempt to curb the financial obligations associated with Scarlet Line, the uniforms and poms are owned by Springfield High School. Dancers are assigned uniforms and poms for the year. If a dancer loses or damages an item, his/her family will be held financially responsible for the replacement. Members of Scarlet Line must maintain grades in compliance with the District 186 rules. District 186 Eligibility requires that a student has passed five academic classes with the previous semester as well as maintain passing grades in five academic classes during the performance season. The athletic office, as well as the coach(es), will monitor grades on a weekly basis. A student found ineligible will be temporarily removed from participation until grades improve. Selection of the team will be determined by the coach, with assistance from the panel of judges, using the following information: Tryout Scores Permission Form Academic Eligibility Teacher Recommendations (3) Application/Interview questions (1-2) Demeanor throughout the tryout process Candidates must demonstrate cooperation and enthusiasm, positive behavior and attitudes, respectful demeanor to coach(es) and peers, successful school attendance, and academic performance. Being a part of the SHS Scarlet Line Dance Team program is a special privilege. It comes with a lot of responsibility and commitment. Please take time to consider the expectations set forth prior to going through the tryout process. Contact me at SHSPoms@yahoo.com with any questions or concerns. Coach Caitlyn Kunz

Springfield High School Scarlet Line Contract The purpose of the Springfield High School Scarlet Line is to promote school spirit and to support all athletics of Springfield High School. All rules and expectations are established to ensure the best representation of the SLDT program and Springfield High School. I. Teamwork a. All squad members have the responsibility to work together with respect and support. b. Dancers will respect their teammates, coaching staff, teachers, administrators, peers and the program at all times. Failure to do so will result in consequences. c. The SLDT requires ALL members to be on the floor or field at the same time in a coordinated performance. Teammates depend on one another to achieve success. All members must work together as a team. It is essential that EACH dancer puts in the work to do their part to help the team be successful. That includes but is not limited to bringing a positive attitude, being supportive and helping your teammates, practicing routines on your own time, and coming to games/practices mentally and physically prepared. II. Behavior a. Dancers will abide by the District 186 and team rules at all times. b. Dancers are to avoid situations that could cause embarrassment to themselves, their families, Springfield High School, and the SLDT program. c. Responsibility for behavior is part of being a Scarlet Line dancer, therefore, adherence to ALL school rules and the SLDT contract is expected and required year-round. III. Eligibility Policy a. All dancers are required to follow the rules and guidelines of the SHS handbook for academics. b. The eligibility policy is to be passing 5 of 7 classes while maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA. IV. Drug and Alcohol Policy a. All dancers are required to follow the District Drug & Alcohol Policy set by District 186. b. Failure to abide by this policy may result in permanent dismissal from the team. This will be decided by a meeting between the dancer, parent(s), coach and the Athletic Director.
c. It is important to remember as a member of the SLDT, a dancer is representing themselves, their coach, their team, and their school at ALL times. V. Financial Responsibilities a. Dancers are required to pay the $85.00 athletic fee before the first game and provide an updated physical. The only exception is for those who qualify for a fee waiver and you must re-apply each year. b. Dancers are required to purchase ALL required items. Anticipated expenses can be found on the Financial Obligations handout. c. Failure to pay for items on time may prevent a dancer from participating at camp or for a game if that particular item is needed/being worn and has not been paid for in full. i. Camp is MANDATORY to attend. d. If a dancer is removed from the team or chooses to leave at any point in the year, no reimbursements will be made and payment for any outstanding dues will still be required. VI. Practice & Game Expectations a. It is the responsibility of each dancer to notify the head coach in advance of any absence or tardy from practice. This may be done by text, voic , groupme message or in person but not through a teammate. b. Practice Times: i. Summer practices will be at least 2 times a week and every dancer is expected to be in attendance. ii. During the school year, practice will be every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:30pm-5:30pm. If there is a Tuesday game, practice will be Monday and Thursday. iii. Dancers will not have practice during finals weeks, the first week of winter break, or Spring break. iv. Additional practices will be added to prepare for city tournament. These practices may be during the 2 nd week of winter break and/or on weekends. Those dates will be provided in advance and all additional practices are mandatory. v. If practice is cancelled, the head coach will notify at least 24 hours in advance. vi. Dancers will be expected to arrive to games up to 3 hours prior to start time to practice and mark spaces on the field/court. These pre-game practices are mandatory and will be communicated before each game. vii. Due to added practices, it is recommended that families do not book travel during these high demand dates (07/01/19-07/19/19, 08/05/19-08/16/19, 12/30/19-01/24/20) c. Excused Absences: Include but are not limited to family emergencies, illness, school trips, and doctor s appointments.
VII. VIII. i. The head coach will make the determination whether an absence is excused or not. ii. Every effort should be made to schedule doctor s appointments to not interfere with poms. d. Unexcused Absences: Include car trouble, inability to find a ride, work, involvement in other sports and/or activities, day/weekend trips. e. If a dancer attends school, he/she is expected to attend practice. f. Dancers must be in attendance for the entire practice before each game to be allowed to perform. g. If for any reason a dancer misses practice, whether excused or unexcused, it is the responsibility of that dancer to learn what was missed and be prepared for the next practice. Game Day Expectations a. Dancers must attend at least a half day of school on game days to be eligible to perform. b. Excused absences for games ONLY include extreme illness, death in the family, or a school activity required for class. c. The head coach will provide the game day dress expectations the practice before a game. The dancer is expected to show up in a clean uniform with the specified hair and makeup requirements. This includes the correct warm-ups, undergarments, and shoes. If a dancer does not show up prepared, they will be benched from performing at the game. Fundraising Requirements a. All dancers will be required to participate in fundraising. Money raised will go towards the SHS Poms fund that pays for uniforms, off-sets costs of required purchases, special events, senior night presents, etc. b. If the dancer does not sell items or work at a fundraising event, a financial buyout is required to be made to the squad in lieu of participating in the fundraiser. Each fundraiser s buyout cost will vary depending on time, effort and number of participants needed. i. Ex: Cookie Dough Fundraiser, etc. c. If the event does not offer a buyout, the dancer must participate in the fundraiser (i.e. State Fair Parking, Kid Clinic, etc.). If they do not, they will be required to sit out the next 2 performances. d. Opportunities for personal fundraising will be made available on an if-needed and requested basis. Scholarships to help cover expenses are limited and on a first come, first serve basis. We do not always have scholarship donors so please take advantage of all fundraising opportunities.
IX. Garment Care a. Each dancer is responsible for the care, maintenance, and upkeep of his/her assigned SLDT garments and accessories; hand washing is preferred to preserve the uniforms. b. Dancers will be held financially responsible for the loss and/or damage (beyond normal wear and tear) of school owned garments and accessories. c. Dancers may NOT alter their uniforms in any way without the head coach s permission. d. All school owned garments must be returned at the end of each season clean and in good condition. X. Competition & Competitive Squads a. The SLDT will not always compete competitively. However, any dance competitions done outside of the dance team should meet any and all IHSA guidelines. XI. Appearance Guidelines a. The coach will designate each game day and event attire. All dancers are to follow accordingly. b. All dancers are expected to be in uniform in their appearance for all events when the SLDT wears their uniforms. c. Dancers are expected to have natural looking makeup and hair color, short nails and clean polished nails (no chips). d. All jewelry must be able to be removed for practices, games, and events. e. Hair must be pulled back from one s face for all practices. A secure ponytail is required unless the dancer s hair does not reach her shoulders, then it must be pulled back as much as possible. Game day hair will be determined by the head coach and will inform them the practice before. f. No visible tattoos allowed. XII. Community Service Requirement a. We are teaming up with Compass for Kids to give back to our community and help our team members gain great social skills. We will send at least half of our team each Wednesday after school to work with these kiddos. We will make a rotation calendar that requires girls to attend every other week. If for any reason a member cannot go, you must find someone to take your place. These kiddos love interacting with you and look up to you, and the more of the team we can get there, the better.
