1 TEN THINGS TO DO FOR A SUCCESSFUL FAIR Pen Reservations: 1. Pen reservations and entry fee are due to Sue Keen by June The reservation form needs to be filled out completely with sex, color, age, and ear numbers (no blank ear numbers). Please print. Make sure your rabbit is sexed correctly. If it is entered into the wrong class, it will not be shown. Fair Check-In: 4. You can scratch a rabbit due to illness, death, molt, etc. or if you just don t want to bring it for whatever reason. You can substitute another rabbit only if it will be in the same class (breed, sex, age, and color) of the original rabbit. If you entered a meat class and they do not all make weight, then you can change it to a heaver class. 5. If rabbits are tattooed just before bringing to the fair, the ink must be removed so that the numbers can be read. 6. Nails should always be trimmed before entering to avoid excess scratches on the people checking in the rabbits. 7. Check in will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 7. Please be patient as the Open Show will be going on during this time. 8. Know your rabbit s ear number or have a list made out to bring with you. This will be a tremendous help if the number cannot be read. 9. Once you are checked in and all rabbits are put away, please clean up around your area. Remember: Boys are bucks and girls are does (not males and females). An Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Institution

3 Interactive Demonstration An interactive demonstration is not like a regular demonstration where the audience sits and listens to a prepared talk. An interactive demonstration lets the audience get involved. Interactive demonstrations are given by 4-H members in the Rabbit Barn at the fair. Your job as the demonstrator is to interest them in your topic so that they stop and try their hand at what you are doing. Sign-up sheets will be posted in the Rabbit Barn. Dear 4-H Family, Welcome to an exciting year of fun and learning activities for Rabbit project members. Please read the information in this book and keep it posted. SAVE THIS BOOK! A few reminders: Members must belong to a local club to complete this project. The La Porte County Fair will be July 8-14, Fair Concession/Food Stand We need rabbits! Each year, the stand buys rabbits from members, creating a market for our members to sell their rabbits. We will buy all breeds at $.75 per pound live weight. If you wish to sell rabbits, contact Tonya Rogers at or Nancy Williamson at We need help processing the rabbits. These steps are very easy to learn and if everyone would offer to help, it would lighten the load for all. Our theory is, come when you can and leave when you have to. We will compensate everyone who helps with payment of Bunny Bucks, which can be redeemed at the food stand during fair. Processing dates will be announced at the workshops. MAY 15 OWNERSHIP deadline will be enforced. Rabbit must be owned and cared for by the 4-H member and may not be shown by any other person other than the exhibitor from May 15 th through the fair. Hop To It Family Award - This special award will recognize the volunteer efforts of families to improve the La Porte County 4-H rabbit program. Information will be available at workshops and applications will be due by July 21. We hope that you have a great year learning about rabbits! Closer to fair, we will be looking for help to set-up and tear-down the stand, work shifts, help clean, etc. Please call Jody Rose at to let her know where you can help. Each year, the stand is better and better because of the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. We can be very proud of the stand because there isn t another one like it that we know of! All proceeds from the stand come back to support the 4-H rabbit program and its members. Visit us on Facebook at: La Porte Co 4-H Rabbit Project 10 2
