1 Stuart Cramer Dance Team Try-Outs Athletic Director: Mr. Radford Coach: Erin Busler When? If you think you have a current physical on file, ask your athletic director if you can obtain a copy.) Meet athletic eligibility requirements Contact sheet completely filled out (attached with this packet) Parent/Student permission form Dance Team contract initialed and signed by Parent and Student. Four completed teacher recommendations (These recommendations factor into your final score, and are a very important) A copy of your most resent report card.(progress reports are not acceptable...it must be a report card. You can access these through the Power Teacher App to create a print out. These will also factor into your final score on the day of tryouts.) Attention Rising 9 th Graders Only!!!! Rising 9 th Graders Must also turn in 2 proofs of residency by May 1 nt in order to participate in Tryouts!!!Examples: power, cable, or phone bills that include the parent's name and address.

Stuart Cramer High School Dance Team Tryout Package Practice Dates: Monday, May 15 th from 3:45pm-5:15pm Tuesday, May 16 th from 3:45pm-5:15pm Wednesday, May 18 th from 3:45pm-5:15pm Practices are closed to the public. Tryout Date: Thursday, May 19 th from 3:45pm-Until Tryouts are closed to the public. Attire: Practice Attire: You should wear comfortable, athletic clothes, dance or tennis shoes, with hair pulled back off face. Absolutely no jewelry for safety reasons. Tryout Attire: 1. Black Shorts 2. White, fitted t-shirt (no writing or logo of any kind) 3. Dance shoes/tennis shoes in white, black, or neutral 4. No colored nail polish or jewelry 5. Hair should be securely off face Necessary Forms: Candidates must have all of the following forms by May 8 th before being permitted to participate in the tryout process: Parent Permission Form Current Physical/Within a Year Signed and Initialed Dance Team Contract by parent and student 4 Teacher Recommendations Attached copy of most recent report card(progress reports are not sufficient) 9 th Graders Only: 2 proofs of residency by May 1 nd All paperwork must be turned in no later than May 8 th by 3:15pm. Participation in dance tryout practices will be prohibited if any of the forms are missing or incomplete. The Tryout Judging System: The following system is the basis on which each candidate will be judged: Each student will be judged on a numerical scale for each individual category, with the highest number being the best score. There will be 2-3 outside judges on tryout day, each are very knowledgeable in the area of

3 dance and are not affiliated in the Cramerton community. The dance coach will also complete an evaluation during the tryout practice week for each candidate. This evaluation will reflect each candidate's cooperation, participation, attendance, skill level, promptness, and overall attitude during the entire practice week. This evaluation will be added to each candidate's final score sheet on tryout day. A 1 minute dance as well as a 1 minute pom routine will be taught (with or without poms) during the 3 day practices. These dances will be performed in small groups and judged on tryout day. In addition to the 2 dance routines, the candidate will be asked to complete a series of skills individually that will be awarded points. These skills are: 1. Double pirouette 2. Grand jete (split leap) 3. Toe Touch 4. Grand battements (kicks) to front and side 5. One additional bonus jump, one additional turning combination, and one tumbling pass of the dancer's choice. This is optional, but can receive extra points. Each candidate will be given 2 tries for each dance and 2 tries for each individual skill. A max of 13 dancers will be selected to represent Stuart Cramer High School during the season. Coaches reserve the right to make a cutoff when a point discrepancy occurs. Academics: All athletes must maintain their academic eligibility at all times. All athletes must maintain a C or better in all classes each semester. Please consider your child's ability to keep up with homework, school projects, field trips, etc., while maintaining the demanding time schedule associated with dance team. Dance Rules and Regulations: All candidates making the team and their parent(s) will be required to sign the Dance Team Contract. Dancers will follow a demerit system of discipline throughout the year. Accumulation of 15 demerits will result in dismissal from the team. Absences or late arrival to practices and games for any reason will result in demerits. Projected Expenses: Financial demands should be considered before trying out for dance team. The following is an estimate of costs for items needed by each dancer. It will cost approximately $355-$455. Please consider these costs before signing the parent permission form. Uniform costs will need to be paid within the weeks following auditions in order for uniforms to arrive on time. If all costs have not been paid by their due date, this may result in suspension from games and/or removal from the team. Closing: Again, thank you for your interest in the SCHS Dance Team. 9 Date: Dance Team Contract All Facets of this contract must be accepted and initialed to tryout. PURPOSE It shall be the purpose of a SCHS Dancer to promote and uphold team spirit for those we encounter, to develop good sportsmanship by example, to support good relations in the community and between teams and squads during events. The organizational goal is to work in harmony with the team management and administration, other athletic teams and sporting organizations. ELIGIBILITY A dance candidate must support the Storm above all other teams. A dance candidate must be neatly presented, medically fit, and provide parental permission. A dance candidate must be passing all classes with a C or better per semester. A dance candidate must have 85% attendance for this semester. A dance candidate must have all forms and papers turned in on time. Acceptance of a dance candidate shall be on the basis of ability, the coaches agreement, acceptance of the team rules, and without prejudice of race, creed, or color. MEMBERSHIP Members will dance for football and basketball games. The regular team will consist of a maximum of 13 dancers. Additional members may be admitted and allowed to fill regular team positions as they reach performing proficiency, vacancies occur, or temporary positions in the events a regular dancer is unable to perform his/her dance team duties. The entire regular dance team will dance at all scheduled games, promotions, fundraisers, and community/charity events. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS Dance Team is a year long sport. Our season runs from May tryouts to the following May tryout. All Dancers will attend all practices, games, and events unless pre-approved by coach. Absenteeism of 5 or more practices (excused or unexcused) per season (Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul- Sept, Oct-Dec) will result in suspension of dancing. Practices will continue to be mandated. Missing more than one quarter for a football or basketball game is considered and absence. Missing more than 15 minutes of practice is considered and absence. Summer Camp: All dancers, managers, and coaches are required to attend annual camp as a squad. This will not be optional. Social Activities: All members are encouraged, but not required to attend. Advance notice of non attendance is required. Team activities other than games: Even though these are social activities, members will be

10 required to attend a reasonable proportion of these duties throughout the year. Notification of required attendance will be given in advance. If any other activities or opportunities are chosen by the coaches/managers, coaches/managers will decide if the event is mandatory or optional. Reasonable notice of all such activities/opportunities will be given for mandatory events, and as early as possible for others. DEMERIT SYSTEM 15 demerits will be given TOTAL/per year. Reaching 15 demerits will mean dismissal from the team. Absence from Dance Team practice for any 1 demerit and/or not dancing the following game reason(absence from practice the day before a game may result in sitting out of certain dances) Absence from a Dance Team event for any reason Tardiness to a game or practice (15 minutes or more) Jewelry(earrings, watches,hair bows, bracelets, belly rings), long fingernails, acrylic nails, nail polish,incorrect attire(ribbons, uniform, hair), forgetting items needed for game(poms), chewing gum, and uniform violations. Lacking cooperation, captains acting unfairly, inappropriate behavior/attitude, profanity/gestures, unsportsmanlike conduct, disrespectful behavior towards other students, coaches, and/or faculty and staff. This includes demerit distribution, game suspension, and/or dismissal from the team. FINACIAL REPONSIBILITIES Annual Camp/Clinics: The dancer is responsible for the cost of attending. Fundraiser projects my be available to assist those participating. Transportation: Dancers are responsible for supplying their own transportation to and from games/events. All monies collected from fundraisers will be used for dance team uniforms, camps, and equipment. Any leftover portion will be the responsibility of each individual dancer.

11 Dancers are responsible for the cost of their uniform, shoes, equipment(poms), etc. Financial issues, if needed, will be addressed on an individual basis, and the parent(s) needs to contact the coach, not the dancer. Members will provide their own refreshments when not provided by the managers/coachers or event organizers. TRYOUTS A tryout will consist of performing designated skills in front of a set of qualified judges and coaches/managers. The judges will allot points for each skill performed and it will be added to the candidates final score. Candidates will also have a coach's score based on coach observation during the practice days. Candidate's grades will also factor into their final score. Candidates will be judged according to a point scale during the practice days. These points will be awarded toward the total. The format of the tryouts will be decided by the coaches, and will be held in a fair and open manner conducive to allowing each candidate to show his/her best abilities and potential. Initials: Parent Student SELECTION OF CAPTAINS AND CO-CAPTAINS Captains and Co-Captains will be selected from the top 5 scorers who have been a member of the team for a minimum of 1 year. Captains and Co-Captains will be voted on by the team, and must present a presentation as to why they would be the best captain for the team. Captains and Co-Captains must also teach a short routine to the team where they will be scored on their ability to lead. Only one Captain and two Co-Captains will be selected. Initials: Parent Student DUTIES OF CAPTAINS AND CO-CAPTAINS Set an example to the rest of the team by following the rules and regulations of the SCHS Dance Team Contract inside and outside of the school. Be at practice early and start practice on time. Will assist in setting/choreographing dances to be used at games and events. The team should make suggestions, but the decision shall be made by the Captain, Co-Captain, and Coach. Act as a peacemaker in case of disagreements. Be responsible for welcoming visiting teams and setting a good example of friendliness to other dancers/cheerleaders. Keep the crowd entertained and your dancers in proper formation during games. Show no partiality within the team. In the event the Captain or Co-Captain is not able to perform his/her duties, the secondary Captain/Co-Captain or assigned Group Leader will do so. Organize team building events, school spirit events, and fundraising events. They should be able to delegate duties with fairness.

12 PRACTICE SCHEDULE To be set by the coach. As far as practical this will be given to you at least a month in advance. Be flexible when dates come up that may not have as much notice. All dancers are required to attend all practice sessions. To be counted as attending, each candidate must participate in all facets of practice. Warm up is not optional. No talking during transitions. Team members, potential team members, or pre-approved assistants only at practice. Initials: Parent Student UNIFORMS AND PRACTICE WEAR For safety reasons, jewelry will not be worn with uniform or at practice, except for small, flat earrings or studs. Uniforms must be kept spotless at all times. Team members will follow the guidelines set by they coach and the team captain/co-captains as to what to wear to school on game days. Make up should be natural and not excessive. No glitter or tattoos on face unless specifically arranged by the team with coach approval. Dancers should look their best at all times, especially when in uniform. Uniforms will be purchased by the dancer. Only official team jackets may be worn over uniform. Dancers in uniform or wearing any item of team identification must always conduct themselves in a manner becoming to SCHS members inside and outside of school. Initials: Parent Student CONDUCT Team members are required to maintain and uphold the reputation of the SCHS Dance Team through their own conduct and team spirit in and outside of school. This includes opinions posted publicly Members are required to be courteous, polite, friendly, and try to have a smile for everybody. Members will make every attempt to ignore or dissuade negative responses at events and not become involved in such action themselves. Members will stay focused on games and be prepared for any dance routine called. Members will work to understand each other and respect each others opinions. FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES All dancers will participate in all fundraising projects per year. The money raised will be used to fund additional agreed upon expenses during the year such as extra items for kit or equipment. All fundraising activities will be approved by the majority of the team and with the approval of the coach.

13 DISIPLINARY ACTION It shall be team policy that disciplinary action will only be invoked as a last resort, and that every reasonable attempt will be made to avoid situations likely to lead to such action through team discussion and positive encouragement, by example, and by finding ways and means to correct negative trends. Demerits will be given for every violation to the listed constitution, practice rules, and team rules. Demerit consequences will be set by the coach; however, with 15 demerits the dancer will be dismissed from the team. A dancer may be placed on probation for the following reasons: excessive absences or tardiness, failure to cooperate with coaches, if grades fall below a D in any area, or failure to abide by team rules and regulations. If a dancer quits without approval or is dismissed from the team, they will not be allowed to tryout next year. GASTON COUNTY SCHOOL ATHLETICS In addition to the above constitution, Gaston County Athletic Handbook applies to all dancers. Dancers will also adhere to the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Policy for Athletes. It is the dancer's responsibility to be familiar with these policies.
