5 Dear Wildcat Family, Welcome to the official Rule Book for the University of Kentucky 2017 Homecoming Week. This year will be the 102 nd Homecoming at UK, and the Homecoming Coalition is very happy to be bringing you events to make this homecoming season memorable. As the Overall Coordinators of the Homecoming Coalition, we work with all the organizations currently involved in the Coalition in order to make sure that Homecoming is a cohesive unit that reflects a common vision. The Homecoming Coalition s goal is to create a Homecoming week that represents our diverse culture on campus. Homecoming is one of the best traditions at UK. The Coalition works hard year-round to make sure that this tradition stays alive. This will be the second year that the Coalition will be taking on a larger role in the coordination and supervision of events. Royalty, Paint the Town Blue, Banner Competition, Wildcat Cup, and Kitty Karnival will be under the Coalition s supervision and coordination. We are currently undergoing changes to make sure that Homecoming is inclusive to all students, faculty, staff and alumni at the University of Kentucky. Some changes have been made this year so that we can provide everyone with an amazing Homecoming week. After reading the Rule Book, please contact the Homecoming Coalition with any questions you may have at ukhccoalition@gmail.com. This year s homecoming theme is Superheroes: Not All Wildcats Wear Capes. This theme was created to showcase the remarkable students, staff, faculty, and alumni that are part of the Wildcat Family. We hope that this theme will allow for creativity in your organization and cannot wait to see how everyone incorporates this theme into their designs! Homecoming is a time to celebrate the traditions our fellow Wildcats have left before us, and making new traditions to leave for Wildcats to come. Please join us in celebrating Homecoming during October 1 st -7 th. We hope to see you at all the events. As always, Go Cats! Cecelia Tio and Melissa Hong Overall Coordinators of the Homecoming Coalition 5

7 The Homecoming Coalition exists to unify the UK Community through programmatic efforts, bringing forward a celebration of tradition, spirit, and university values. The University of Kentucky s Homecoming Coalition was formed in February 2010 and has since worked to better coordinate individual programming of multiple organizations into one cohesive Homecoming Schedule. The Homecoming Coalition is made up of representatives from several organizations; including the Student Activities Board, the Black Student Union, DanceBlue, Center for Community Outreach, UK Student Government, Students Today Alumni Tomorrow/TEAM Wildcat, Alumni Association, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. All of these organizations work together to coordinate a weeklong schedule of events including (but not limited to) DanceBlue 5K, Paint the Town Blue, The Banner Competition, Kitty Karnival, Step Show, Mr. and Miss Black UK, Trivia Night, Alumni Basketball Game, and the Royalty Showcase. In an effort to move forward with a cohesive Homecoming Schedule, the Homecoming Coalition has appointed two Overall Coordinators and a Promotional Coordinator to help direct, schedule, and promote the Homecoming events. In order to get more information or questions for planning contact Cecelia Tio (Overall Coordinator), Melissa Hong (Overall Coordinator), or Cassie Woolley (Promotional Coordinator). 10 Wildcat Cup Restructuring In an effort to make Homecoming more inclusive of all students, faculty, and staff there will be a restructuring of the Wildcat Cup. The Homecoming Coalition understands that the student body is unique and diverse. In the past, there have been three Wildcat Cups that Homecoming participants could win. They were divided in the three categories: Fraternity, Sorority, and Non-Greek. This year we will have three cups that can be won based on certain criteria with new names. We hope that these new categories will be more fitting for our student body. Bowman s Cup Bowman is the name of the University of Kentucky s most beloved statue. Named after John Bowman, the visionary behind the University of Kentucky. John Bowman was determined to see the University of Kentucky come to fruition after the Civil War. Bowman had many road-blocks in his way, but his perseverance allowed for the creation of the university. The Bowman s Cup will be given to a registered UK student organization, UK LLP, or UK official sports team that has shown that they believe in the spirit of UK and represent the spirit of John Bowman. By participating in events and activities during homecoming week participants can receive points in order to win this cup and demonstrate their school spirit. Commonwealth Cup Kentucky is actually not a state, it is a commonwealth. The Commonwealth is full of pride and of spirit, especially spirit for its university, the University of Kentucky. This award goes to a Greek organization that has demonstrated their spirit for the University of Kentucky and the Commonwealth by competing in Homecoming activities and attending Homecoming events. By participating in these events and activities during Homecoming week participants can receive points in order to win this cup. Bluegrass Cup Kentucky has been nicknamed the Bluegrass State for the Bluegrass that fills its fields and makes the region unique and diverse. UK is proud of its own unique and diverse students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Homecoming week is a time to celebrate these individuals and come together in celebration of our Bluegrass region. This cup goes to the Greek organization that has demonstrated pride in the University by participating and attending homecoming events. By participating in these events and activities during homecoming week participants can receive points in order to win this cup. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about these new changes please feel free to contact the Homecoming Coalition at ukhccoalition@gmail.com. 10

Any discrepancies will be reviewed and may be cause for disqualification of the candidate(s). vi. Student voting will occur via text vote starting at 9:00 PM the day of royalty showcase, Tuesday, October 3rd and will continue until 9:00 PM on Wednesday, October 4 th. REMEMBER: voting only counts towards 30% of an individual s overall score. Pizza Meet and Greet 21

22 Homecoming Coalition is dedicated to making sure that students who wish to participate in the Royalty competition do not need to campaign in order to receive a royalty title. By allowing the students to showcase their talents, instead of campaigning, each student is able to show the student body their unique and individual personality. This year to enhance the royalty competition, without using campaigning, we are having a pizza meet and greet event where the student body can come and meet the candidates. Rules and Regulations for the Pizza Meet and Greet: i. Both Homecoming King and Queen candidates and Mr. and Miss Black UK participants can be involved in the pizza meet and greet. ii. All food will be provided by the Homecoming Coalition. No outside foods or drinks are allowed to be distributed. iii. All flyers and hand bills will be created by the Homecoming Coalition iv. Only the flyers and handbills created by the Homecoming Coalition will be handed out. Any candidate who is found in violation of this rule will be disqualified. v. The candidates may have one other representative with them at the event to help them pass out pizza, if they so choose. If the candidate has a class and cannot attend the event, they are allowed to send two representatives in their place. vi. Candidates and their representatives are representing the University and Homecoming Coalition as a whole and must present themselves in a respectful manner. vii. Candidates and their representatives may not campaign or self-promote any individual. Candidates and their representatives can only tell students about the showcase, about themselves, and how (not whom) to vote. 22
