Music Department Mission Statement The Blanchester Music Department Mission is to provide all students the best possible music education through compelling experiences of singing, playing, moving, performing, or creating music that develops life long musicians and supporters of the arts. Excellence is not a place of arrival. We don't "get to" excellence. It is a process we go through each and every day. 3

ATTENDANCE POLICY Expectations: You have made a commitment to be in the Wildcat Band for the upcoming school year. Everyone is counting on you! In order to have successful band rehearsals and performances, it is essential that we have full attendance. The absence of one person not only affects that person, but also the entire group. In some cases you will be the only student who performs your music part in the band. The critical marching factors of uniformity, balance, spacing and alignment cannot be improved or maintained with absences. Attendance at school the day (at least ½ day) of a performance is required. Saturday performances are exempt from this rule. It is the responsibility of each member of the Marching Band to insure they are in attendance at every Marching Band Activity. Attendance will be a factor when considering students for leadership positions as well as for a student to maintain their current leadership position. When time allows, use the online form at this address: to report absences. Legitimate Excuses: Legitimate excuses for rehearsal or performance absence are illness, accident, or serious illness/death in the family, doctors appointments or some other unforeseen emergency as determined by Mr. Wood. If possible, contact the Band Office at ext prior to an emergency absence from a performance. Students must bring an excuse note from parent or guardian following any absence. A request to be excused from a future rehearsal must be turned in at the earliest possible time and will be considered by the director, pending the legitimacy of the case presented. All absences will be considered on an individual basis. Personal/Family Business, and other school related activities that are not pre-approved will be considered unexcused. Students are also expected to not have after-school detentions or schedule meetings that can otherwise be avoided. Unexcused Absences: Unexcused absence from a performance is unacceptable and will result in a grade of 0 for the performance. Absences, tardiness or leaving early from rehearsals or performances because of work or homework are not excused. Problems with absences, tardiness or leaving early from rehearsal will be given appropriate consequences regarding performance opportunities and section leader positions. Ask: If you are not sure, or have a request, problem, or question then ask Mr. Wood at the earliest possible time. Performances You have enrolled in a performance ensemble where performances outside of the school day are inevitable and required. Because musicians rely on one-another to perform well, it is necessary that all students are in attendance for performances. Performance schedules are always published at the beginning of the school-year, or even earlier, and every attempt is made not to make changes to the schedule. If a student misses a 4

performance, they will not receive credit for the performance and no make-up assignments will be offered. Band Camp Expectation The overall goals for Band Camp are to lay a firm foundation of music and visual basics, establish rehearsal etiquette, learn as much of the contest show as possible, learn pregame, and begin to develop the band family atmosphere. Pre Camp and Band camp are mandatory to all who wish to participate in band or color guard. All school rules apply while at camp. Students should be familiar with the Blanchester High School handbook from the previous year, and understand that all rules apply during camp. Anyone who is in violation will be subject to removal from camp and will face disciplinary action with school administrators. Band Expectations Be Your Best Be Your Best is a goal that everyone can achieve. It means simply that Be YOUR Best. This is not the same as be THE best, which is something that few can achieve. It is all that is expected of you, but it is expected ALL of the time every minute, every practice, every day and every performance. Further, it is expected that you will be your best in rehearsals and performances as well as outside of organized band activities. You can measure your success and do not have to wait until someone else, like the director, senior, section leader, or a judge tells you. You know! SHOW RESPECT Respect yourself. Respect others. Respect the band traditions, facilities, equipment, and uniforms. BE PREPARED Band members are responsible for doing their best, working on their individual skills, and practicing. All equipment must be brought to rehearsals as requested instrument, music, flow charts (marching season) and pencil. BE ON TIME Students should arrive at the building 15 minutes before the rehearsal is scheduled to be ready to start on time. If you count on someone else to get a ride to practice, tell them the 5

time you have to BE THERE is 15 minutes before the rehearsal begins. With this concept, you will be prepared physically and mentally to begin the rehearsal and not flying in at the last minute or late. You also will have a cushion of safety if there is extra traffic or you are running a couple of minutes behind. Rehearsal Procedures When tardy to a marching rehearsal for any reason, students will wait on the sideline at attention until a director has an opportunity to talk to you. This will allow the rehearsal to continue uninterrupted. For summer rehearsals wear appropriate attire. Shorts, hat, sunscreen, sun glasses, and school appropriate shirts if you cannot wear it during the regular school day in classrooms, then do not wear it to band rehearsal. Proper shoes with socks must be worn during marching season. Cross trainer type tennis shoes are great, not high top. No food, drink, gum or candy is permitted in the band room at any time during the school day or after school hours. No one should play another persons instrument or spin a flag/weapon at any time. This includes all percussion instruments. Instruments/flags should be put away at the conclusion of every rehearsal in the storage lockers/closet. You may choose to bring a lock to secure your belongings; however, a second key or locker combination must be turned into Mr. Wood. PLEASE NOTE THAT REEDS MAY BE PURCHASED BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL, GENERALLY NOT DURING CLASS. EACH STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO HAVE BASIC CARE ITEMS FOR THEIR SPECIFIC INSTRUMENT. Assessment Procedures Assessment is an ongoing process, students grow through the year. Assessment categories and procedures are outlined below. These are subject to change with prior approval of school administration and students and parents being informed. 40% Musicianship 40% Performances 15% Playing test/quizzes 5% Written assignments Playing tests will sometimes have a rubric that gives descriptors of various levels of performance achievement. Written assignments beyond straight forward worksheets will have rubrics assigning point values to various content areas for that assignment. Some playing tests will require recording using digital media. 6

Any written work is to be neat and legible. Late work will not be accepted. In the case of student absence one extra day will be given to make up work assigned during the absence. Unexcused absences result in a zero. Cheating, or copying work for any assignment will result in disciplinary consequences and receiving a zero on the assignment. Extra credit will only be offered to students who have at least a 70%. Extra credit can be earned by attending pre-approved cultural events. Following the event you must write a one page summary of the event, and present a ticket stub or program. Various opportunities will come up through the year to attend honor band events outside of school. For consideration in these events, students must be earning a 93% or better, and have ZERO discipline issues. This may seem like a high expectation, but when students attend these events, as always they represent themselves, Blanchester Schools, their church if they have one, their parents, the Blanchester Bands, and their band director. Therefore, only the most well-behaved, responsible, and highly qualified student musicians will be selected for nomination and recommendation to honor bands. Weekly Musicianship Assessment Rubric Each band student earns a weekly musicianship grade. Listed below are the criteria for determining each week s grade. 20 Points The student always has needed materials at hand and in order for class: pencil, band folder, sheet music, method books, instrument specific materials-reeds, oils, drum key, mallets, approved sticks. This does not include shoes, gloves, and appropriate clothing worn under the uniform. The following guidelines are in place to help preserve and care for the brand new uniforms. A marching band in a sharp and well-fitted uniform is an impressive sight. In order to present a uniform look and make a great impression, it is important that uniform guidelines be strictly adhered to. The uniform is to be worn completely at all times in public view. Looking First Class at all times is part of the band s tradition. Parent volunteers will issue and collect uniforms for performances. Parent volunteers will set up a rotation to launder the instrumental and guard uniforms every three weeks during the season, and once at the end of the fall marching 9

season. Students will be responsible to alert parent volunteers if their uniform needs attention for any reason. Hats All hair must be tucked inside hat. The hat should sit just above the ears and not cover any part of the ears. The front of the hat should sit two fingers above the eyebrows. Baseball caps are not part of the band uniform and not to be worn at any time in uniform. Hats are to be kept in the hat box when putting away the uniform. Hat boxes are to be stored in the uniform cabinets only, not in hall or instrument lockers. Plumes Plumes will be handed out at the appropriate time handle with care. Jacket A T-shirt or similar shirt must be worn under the uniform. Jacket remains zipped at all times in public unless told otherwise by the band staff. Pants Athletic shorts or leotard must be worn under the pants. Shoes Shoes should only be the designated Drillmaster marching shoe and must be cleaned and polished for each performance. Muddy, wet, or freshly polished shoes do not belong in the uniform bag. Socks Black socks that go several inches above the ankle must be worn in uniform. Parkas Music Booster supplied parkas (or raingear) in a parka bag must be brought to each performance. Listen to directions as to where they will be stored. Jewelry/Nail Polish/Make up There should be no jewelry, or nail polish worn that is visible in uniform. There should be no excessive make up. Storage When returning uniform to storage, all items must be neat and properly presented. If wet, do not place the uniform in the garment bag overnight. Uniforms must be allowed to dry completely before placing them inside the bags. Place your jacket on your chair back. Lay the pants across the seat of your chair. Accidents, stains, rips, or tears, etc, to the uniform will be charged to the student/parent. Please try to avoid eating while in uniform. Remember you are responsible for your uniform and it is expensive!! After every performance, students should check to see if the uniform should be washed. We have moved to a buttoned pant (bib) hem. DO NOT CUT OFF ANY MATERIAL FROM THE BIB LEGS. The bibbers should hang a couple of finger widths above the top of the toe area of the shoe. This should keep the pants from dragging the ground. Once the hem is in place; press the pant legs for a crisp hem. Make sure the hem of your pant legs do not drag on the ground. If the hem is too long you will wear a hole in the material and the bibs will need to be replaced for about $55 out of your pocket. Volunteer Booster Parents will wash uniforms about every three weeks of use. 10

If you are in need of a last minute repair to your uniform please let one of the parental uniform volunteers or directors know as soon as possible. It is quite difficult to make repairs when we are on the way to, or already at a competition or other performance. Football Game Procedures 1. The band will perform at home and away football games. This includes playoffs. 2. The band will perform pre-game (home and select away games) and halftime. 3. The band will sit/stand in the stands in the designated area in uniform, during 1 st, 2 nd and 4 th quarters. 4. The third quarter will be off for restroom breaks and concessions. Stay in complete uniform at all times minus hat and gloves. 5. Make sure your instrument and hat are safe when you leave to get refreshments. You are responsible for your instrument at all times. 6. There is to be no public display of affection while in uniform. 7. All students including color guard need to be back in the stands prior to the end of the 3 rd quarter. Between 3 rd and 4 th quarters, the band will play. Be ready, with uniform properly on and instrument in hand! Anyone who is not back in time will not be given 3 rd quarter privileges in future games. 8. Do not bring food or drinks back to the stands. 9. The band area is for band members only. 10. During the time outs when the band is playing a song, everyone is expected to play! Band Stand Conduct 1. Great bands look organized at all times. Conduct in the stands at football games is a vital portion of the impression we leave with the public. 2. Be alert: Watch the game and your field commander/directors. Be prepared to play the fight song after each touchdown. Please do not play your instrument unless the entire band is playing. 3. Never leave the stands without permission of the band director. 4. You are a representative of Blanchester High School. Concert Band 1. Concert band season is from the week after marching season ends until the end of the school year. Students in color guard will be expected to fulfill any requirements after marching season to the end of the 2 nd 9 weeks, based on criteria set by Mr. Wood and the color guard advisor. Performances for everyone else include, Christmas concert, Winter concert, Spring concert, Large Group Adjudicated Events (OMEA), Graduation and the Memorial Day Parade, using the next season s color guard. Please note the performance calendar included at the end of the handbook. There may be some performances that are not on the 11

original performance calendar that may come up as opportunities materialize throughout the school year. 2. It is highly encouraged that students participate in Solo and Ensemble Contest with either a solo or an ensemble. It is a requirement to complete at least an in class performance of a solo or small ensemble. 3. Seating for concert band is determined by a playing audition consisting of scales, prepared piece(s) selected by the director, and sight reading. 4. Students will have the opportunity to challenge the person seated ahead of them. Concert Band Seating Policy The concert band uses a ranking system based on audition. The students will audition near the end of marching season for their chair position. The first-chair musician will assume the responsibility of section leader. A chair position does not guarantee specific parts or solos. Parts and solos will either be assigned by the director or by audition. To encourage overall musical growth some sections of the band will rotate parts between pieces. A student may challenge the student in front of them to move up in chairs. A student may only challenge the person one ahead of them. To initiate the challenge, both students must come to the director to schedule a time. The challenge will be scheduled at least one week after the time when the students informed the director. The director will assign music for the challenge. No challenges may take place within 2 weeks before a performance. The challenge may not be reinitiated for 2 weeks. Students may not be involved in more than one challenge at a time. The director reserves the right to change chair positions and initiate chair auditions at any time during the year. Concert Attire Concert dress is formal in nature. Students must follow these guidelines to maintain a classy appearance for the group. Ladies: comfortable, not close fitting, white blouses with long sleeves and shirt tails that tuck in (spring time short sleeves), long solid black skirts (BELOW THE KNEE WHEN SITTING), preferably floor length, hose, and closed-toe black shoes that conform to school dress code. Ladies may choose to wear solid black dress slacks instead of a skirt. Gentlemen: white long sleeved shirt and seasonably appropriate tie, solid black dress slacks, black socks, black dress shoes, and a black jacket if desired. ALL ATTIRE MUST BE PROPERLY BUTTONED and TUCKED IN. Please note that Off-white or cream are not white, and are not acceptable concert attire. 12

Basketball Pep Band 1. The band will play for home boys basketball games 2. A rotation system will be used so not every student will have to be present for every game. Some years, we will collectively work out a schedule that is an equitable, not necessarily equal system, for the members involved. Something like each student has to play 5 out of 10 dates. Some years the band will simply be divided into two groups, Navy and White, and each group will play the approximately the same number of games for the basketball season. 3. If a student is unable to attend one of their scheduled games, they may exchange games with another student in the same section so as to maintain the balance of the band. They must also fill out an exchange form signed by both parties. The form must be submitted to the band director in advance of the game. Transportation To and From Performances 1. Everyone will ride the bus to and from performances. This is a team! 2. All school rules apply on school transportation vehicles! Instrument Transportation and Care 1. Instruments to be placed on the trailer should be properly cased and handled by the musician who plays them. 2. When your instrument is transported on the trailer, it is your responsibility to see that it gets to and from the drop off area at the trailer for the trailer crew to handle. 3. Make sure your instrument is properly identified. 4. Keep a plastic bag in your hat that will be big enough to put your instrument in, in case of rain. 5. Flutes, clarinets, and saxophones should be swabbed out after each rehearsal and performance. 6. Clean your mouthpiece each week with warm, soapy water. Do not get corks wet on clarinet mouthpieces. 7. Brass instruments should be cleaned frequently. Make good use of valve oil and slide lubricant. 8. You are expected to keep your instrument cases securely closed at all times. All latches must be closed. If you are playing a school instrument and do not close the case, the instrument may be taken from you. 13

Use of Facilities Band Room Everyone is responsible for helping to keep this room neat and clean. No food or beverage in the band room. Respect all band room property. Practice Rooms Practice rooms have been provided for the convenience of musicians working individually or in small ensembles. Permission to use a practice room may be obtained from the band director. Your mother is not in band clean your own mess! Storage Areas Instruments and music folders should be kept neatly on the shelving provided in the storage areas. The instrument storage lockers are not to be used for storage of books, uniforms, or other personal articles. During marching season one pair of shoes and an extra clean shirt are permitted in the instrument locker. Music folders should be kept in the folio cabinet at all times. Do not keep them in your instrument cases or lockers. Health Statement and Drug Policy Band is both a musical and a physical activity. All students must strive to make healthy choices in their diet and exercise activities in order for the band to perform at its highest level. Therefore, in addition to a healthy diet, students should only consume water during and around marching rehearsals. Colored/flavored waters often contain extra sugars that are not the best for students to intake, not to mention the effects of blowing that sugar into wind instruments. Students who are a part of the Blanchester Band or Color Guard will choose to live a drug free life. Any infraction will be handled with administrators and Mr. Wood. While current school policies will be followed during these situations, as minimum, for a first time offense, the student will not perform in three consecutive performances during marching band, or one performance during concert band. Second time offenders will not perform for the rest of the semester. Violators will carry this on their record for the rest of their high school career. Simply put, drug use will not be tolerated. Do not put yourself into this situation! Electronic Devices Cell phones will be turned off and put away during rehearsal. These must be turned off when requested during bus trips. Failure to comply will result in the device being confiscated and returned only to the parent. 14

Policy for Students Participating in School Athletics 1. Taking full advantage of all aspects of Blanchester High School is encouraged. 2. When practice times conflict, the student is expected to make the effort to split time with both band and the sport in question. 3. When practice times conflict with athletic games, the student should attend the game. However, the student must be directly involved with the game. Example: A reserve player attending a home varsity game is not an excused absence. Neither will performing duties such as announcing, collecting gate monies, or completing senior service. 4. If in the event that a sporting competition and band competition overlap, every effort should be made to participate in both. Remember that a band s competition only lasts about 15 minutes, on and off the field. Early communication between band director, coach, students and parents is a necessity. 8 th Grade Students Due to the daily schedules of the schools, 8 th grade students who wish to and are granted acceptance into the high school band for marching season will primarily be used as musicians in the sideline pit percussion. They will also learn the pre-game on their wind instrument. They will still play their regular instruments in the middle school band. 8 th grade students may also participate in the pep band at Mr. Wood s discretion. When middle school students participate in the Memorial Day Parade and the July 4 th Parade as middle school students, or between their 8 th grade and 9 th grade years, this does not excuse them from participation in these events during a high school year. The only students not expected to participate in the Memorial Day and July 4 th parades are graduating seniors. Instrument Switches Maintaining proper instrumentation in the band is critical to musical success. Students and parents will understand and be cooperative when students are asked to learn and perform on a different instrument than the one which the student has previously learned. When students are asked to play a school instrument, such as tenor or baritone saxophone, or bass clarinet, then the costs of reeds for that student will be the cost of their regular instrument. Students will be required to demonstrate evidence of good reed care and maintenance. This portion of the instrument switch policy will be in effect as long as it is financially feasible. If a student desires to switch instruments, it will only be done with the director s approval, and will only happen when this maintains the best instrumentation for the band. 15

Fundraising Running a successful music program takes money to operate! Everyone in band/color guard is expected to participate in fundraising activities. Various Music Booster and music department fundraiser events will be scheduled throughout the school year. Again, everyone is expected to participate. Blanchester High School Student and Parent Handbook If in the event that anything has been left out unintentionally from the band handbook, the Blanchester high school student and parent handbook should cover any potential missing information regarding expectations and rules. Please take time at the beginning of the school year to become familiar with the high school student and parent handbook. The director reserves the right to amend the handbook and give appropriate notice to all. One such amendment will be a section outlining student awards. Finally, I look forward to a great year! If you ever have a question about this handbook or about anything else, please don t hesitate to contact Mr. Wood. The following information is for your convenience. 16
