Introduction Quarter 1 (April June 2013) has been a very successful quarter, some key highlights include: Inter-centre competition was held at Fit City Ordsall with over 200 children participating. Success for club gymnasts at Greater Manchester Grades and National Grades. Team gym and boys squads entered the regional micro competition hosted at Fit City Ordsall Disability group sessions in the Multi Sensory Room are now well established. Successful recreational gymnastics Easter camps and gym ability took place with over 75 children attending. Changes to the trampolining programme have been established to accommodate new centres and delivery team. Summer holiday programmes at Fit City Ordsall have been advertised early
Fun City Tots The daytime programme has continued to establish fresh interest, particularly at Eccles and Pendlebury Leisure Centres. Sessions at Eccles, Pendlebury and Worsley have seen children progress from the preschool programme into recreational classes. Fun Community Tots The daytime outreach sessions at Beesley Green Community Centre, Lower Kersal and Salford City Academy have run continuously this term. The funding support for delivery to young mums and baby groups from Worsley Children s Centre has now concluded, however interest has been expressed for additional delivery in September at Worsley URC Church on Friday mornings. These are adult and child sessions to encourage physical activity. There is also community pre-school sessions at Westward Park Community Centre in the provisionally planned winter programme. Recreational Gymnastics The summer term has seen full groups and success for each centre in the inter-centre competition hosted at Fit City Ordsall in May. Some gymnasts have been identified to attend a special screening session at Fit City Ordsall during the holiday for talented gymnasts. An extra camp has also been set up for advanced older gymnasts from the recreational groups similar to a boot camp. The sports specific recreational summer camps were advertised early and all children have been notified with some camps already over subscribed. Sessions will resume in September with new and existing gymnasts working towards the annual Christmas display. Inter-Centre Gymnastics Competition Age 3-4 years section On Saturday 18 th May the annual inter-centre gymnastics competition was held at Fit City Ordsall. 200 children of all ages entered. Lots of fun was had by everyone; parents, gymnasts and coaches enjoyed seeing lots of children achieving new and old skills. The Mayor of Salford and his wife also came to watch and give medals out on the day. Advanced Gymnastics Greater Manchester Open On Saturday 1 st June 4 children from the gym club entered in to the Greater Manchester Open. This is a competition that is open to all the gymnasts in the North West but also other clubs in Great Britain. There were clubs from Scotland, South Durham, Southern England and the Isle of Man as well as the North West. 6 medals were won altogether, which was a big achievement as this was the first time all 3 girls had competed at a higher level. All 3 gymnasts have come from recreational classes and progressed through Development into the squad.
Salford Gymnastics Squad On the weekend of the 11 th and 12 th of May Salford Gymnastics Squad entered the North West 2-piece championships at Robin Park, Wigan. The club won 5 out of a possible 8 overall titles and two of the gymnasts were placed in 2 nd and 3 rd place overall. 10 medals were won on floor and 7 medals were won on the vault. A very good day for Salford Gymnastics Club. Advanced Recreational Sessions All of the advanced groups have been working towards the inter-centre gymnastics competition. As a result of the competition there has been progress within the groups; 2 advanced over 8 s gymnasts have transferred to Salford Gymnastics Club and 5 gymnasts from the under 8 s squad have moved in to the development squad. Also a gymnast from another club has joined this group. Development Squad All of the girls from the development squad have been working extremely hard for their competition; all girls did well with 4 of them coming in the top 3 places. 5 gymnasts have moved into the Salford Gymnastics Club and are all enjoying it; they are currently working towards their first regional competition in January Each gymnast has been assessed on their flexibility and strength and are working hard towards improving on their next assessment. Boy s Gymnastics Squad The boy s gymnastics squad has continued to flourish with many boys on the waiting list that are desperate to attend. The boys have recently taken part in both the inter-centre gymnastics competition and also the micro Team Gym competition. All the boys enjoyed these competitions and are looking forward to participating in further competitions and displays. One of the boys has been invited to attend a trial at Bury Gymnastics Club to see if he has the potential to join their boy s development squad. Team Gymnastics On Sunday 18 th June, Fit City Ordsall hosted the first ever regional North West micro gymnastics competition. The competition saw approximately 80 gymnasts compete on trampette and tumble. The idea of the competition was to allow gymnasts to compete in a team at a friendly low level event. The representatives for Salford came from Worsley Team Gym, Ordsall Team Gym and the Ordsall boys squad. They competed against teams from Bolton Arena, Bolton Gymnastics Clubs and Gym Mania. The gymnasts competed brilliantly and the results reflected their hard work. Salford won 2 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals making it a successful competition both for the gymnasts and the Gymnastics Development Team. The teams are now working hard towards the annual Team Gymnastics competition to be held on 3 rd November at Fit City Ordsall.
Gymnastics in Schools The Gymnastics Development Team are currently working with four schools in Salford and have very good working connections with many other schools. New sessions have started at Bridgewater Independent School and Dukesgate Academy. The curriculum and after school club delivery is going well and will be continuing after the summer break. An afterschool club is being delivered at Irlam Endowed Primary school throughout the summer term and will culminate in a Sportsman s Dinner to award trophies to those children who had made the most progress from all year groups. Trampolining The trampolining programme is continuing to flourish. The new sessions set up at Fit City Ordsall on a Wednesday evening are going well. There is much interest for the trampolining summer camps with one of the weeks already full. The inter-centre trampolining competition is provisionally booked to take place at Fit City Ordsall in October. Disabilities The schools disabilities groups have all achieved awards for trampolining and rebound therapy this quarter. There are three groups who attend from Inscape House School, Cheadle and one from Inscape House School, Salford. A group also regularly attend from Chatsworth High School. The Multi Sensory Room is also regularly used by groups from the Together Trust and with bookings for summer from groups such as Salford Action for Autism and Manchester Council Foster Parents who care for children with disabilities. The team are also privileged to have involvement with Springwood Primary School as part of their Healthy Living Week Event. Crossroads Care and the Starting Life Well Team will be using the room during the summer period with children with severe learning difficulties. The adult sessions are a great way of keeping fit and active in a sociable environment
Case Study Name of Session: Boys Gymnastics Squad This participant started recreational gymnastics at the age of five at Fit City Eccles. When he first started this session he had trouble concentrating and was very disruptive throughout each session. He had trouble keeping still for long periods of time and this often resulted in him hurting other children. However, the coaches realised that he was very physically talented with lots of strength and natural gymnastics ability. He had lots of energy and enthusiasm and if he could just transfer that energy into his gymnastics that he would go far. His behaviour was characteristic of a child with ADHD spectrum (an attention deficit disorder verging on autistic tendencies). Throughout the next 18 months the coaches really worked on his behaviour and once he realised how much he enjoyed gymnastics his behaviour improved and his talent shone through. By the time he was 7 years old, his behaviour had improved so much that the coach spoke to his mother about him moving to the Over 8 s gymnastics session earlier than usual, as his current session was getting much too easy for him. He moved up to this group and participated in many of the displays that this group performed at, including the Christmas display and Eccles festival. He also entered the inter centre competition in April 2010 and won the gold medal on the floor, the silver medal on the vault and won the overall competition. Due to his ever increasing talent and his enthusiastic behaviour, he was selected to become part of the boys gymnastics squad. During his time in this squad he has entered all of the competitions in which he has been invited to attend. These competitions include external competitions such as the Milano Invitational and the North West General Gymnastics Competition and internal competitions such as the inter centre and the micro Team Gym competitions. He has also taken part in all of the displays that such as Africa and Thriller. His personality and enthusiasm have helped assist him and gymnastics has captured his spirit, body and mind and enabled him to learn to focus his brain and control his body.
Forthcoming Events / Activities in Quarter Inter school gymnastic festival to be hosted at Fit City Ordsall on Monday 1 st July A health living week at Springwood Primary School in July Assessment screening day to identify talented gymnasts at Fit City Ordsall. British Gymnastics accredited training venue to host UKCC courses Training course set up for pre-school coaches.
