3 Shyan Selah has dedicated a special aspect of the Cafe Noir Project specifically designed to give youth and young adults real, hands-on experience in all things entertainment industry and how this particular industry involves other industries in its daily production. Through The Cafe Noir Project, Shyan breaks down the entertainment business to provide a unique outlook and perspective through lectures, mentorship, workshops, live performance/production, training courses and more in order to show the links between it and not just students day to day academics, but other life lessons.

4 THE BACKSTORY Shyan s company, Brave New World (BNW), has spent the past five years producing and touring this exclusive event series, consisting of 2 hours of original music, across the country at notable community centers, middle schools, high schools, colleges, universities, live music venues and select Starbucks locations. The project was first birthed at Seattle s now official Starbucks Community Store on 23rd & Jackson in the Central District of Seattle. Performing twice a week for three months for patrons that included neighborhood regulars, middle, high school, and college students, Shyan and the Brave New World team would often bring in education outreach representatives from the top colleges in the area including Seattle U, University of Washington, and Pacific Lutheran University, to speak during intermissions about the importance of higher and continued education. The goal behind the Café Noir Project is to use music as a form of activism in creating community interaction with a special pro-education message for youth. While the music and entertainment industry is more known for its celebrities and superstars, this project reinforces to youth the importance of education by highlighting those skilled and educated professionals behind the scenes who are responsible for making such stars happen. As a result, Shyan and Brave New World have cultivated relationships with nationally known colleges/universities and have included organizations such as Grammy U and ASCAP to join and support this unique tour experience. The initial shows at what BNW considers to be its home Starbucks location were extremely successful. Within one month, Shyan was encouraged by corporate leaders to take the show on the road and travel to as many Starbucks locations as he could fit in with his normal touring schedule. In doing so this became the official start of the Café Noir Tour.

6 TURNING ART INTO BUSINESS In 2015 Shyan was invited to perform at the annual Beatles Tribute Festival in Southern California where he was awarded for the Best Personal Interpretation of Beatles Music among a selection of national acts. Shyan has written and produced music that has been placed in a variety of feature films and major television shows including IFC Films and Official Sundance Festival Selection, Camp X-Ray starring Kristen Stewart; 1000 to 1: The Cory Weissman Story starring Beau Bridges; and CBS/ Paramount s hit primetime Emmy-Nominated drama NUMB3RS.

Shyan and Dean have often collaborated on special events and projects since meeting when Shyan facilitated the Sonics Legends Program ( ) which honored renowned Seattle Supersonics team members over the years. The college stop was part of a Cafe Noir Tour leg through Southern California in It is not only my belief but my absolute experience that sports and entertainment are one in the same. The commitment to discipline, training, practice, rehearsal, preparation and competition is the same. To add, I would say the same holds true for being an entrepreneur as well. The fact is if you want success in anything you have to have a pedigree for learning how to utilize your talents and skills in such a way that when opportunity presents itself you're always ready to seize it. - Shyan Selah

10 BRINGING THE EXPERIENCE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Shyan Selah being honored by the Federal Way Public Schools Board of Education at Illahee Middle School in May Shyan Selah poses with a Todd Beamer High School Student, Illahee Middle School Vice Principal Angela Williamson, and Superintendent Dr. Tammy Campbell after being honored as a Community Hero during The Federal Way Public Schools Heroes Banquet in April Shyan s work in community and education outreach has long been intertwined with his entertainment endeavors and has recently resulted in him being honored two years in a row by the Federal Way School District, first being recognized by the School Board in 2016 for their 20 th Annual Board Recognition Event honoring individuals and organizations in the community; and most recently he was named a Federal Way Public Schools Hero in April 2017 for his creation and participation of education-related entertainment and mentorship programs in Federal Way.

12 RE-ENGAGEMENT MICRO-TOUR PRESENTATION The micro-tour will be conducted like an actual road tour. It will feature powerful motivational appearances at each re-engagement center and will consist of a 30 minutes to 1 hour presentation by Shyan Selah. Get in the moment. On these Live Appearance stops during the Cafe Noir Project micro-tour, Shyan will dive into a soul infused power packed performance and lecture that will highlight his journey and continual triumph against the insurmountable odds that millions of youth and adults across America face every day. How does a kid from nothing grow up to become a singer/songwriter, international recording artist, and self-made entertainment entrepreneur who has shared the stage with the likes of Pink Floyd, Run DMC, and The Tom Petty Band, whose music can be found in TV and film, and who s cultivated strategic partnerships with worldwide brands such as Starbucks and Apple? Here Shyan offers up his life story, going beyond the academics and showcasing a variety of the skill sets he acquired through a life journey that involved both trials and triumphs in order to thrive in all aspects of life. Get Inspired. Shyan offers the students the chance to make the connection and become self-aware of their own influences. The difference from down-and-out to success is all about a state of mind. If a kid from Federal Way can work with Grammy Award Winners, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, and Fortune 500 Companies, what else is possible for those who become inspired to find a purpose and believe? Here the students become Interactive Learners, getting the chance to engage and become critically aware of what moves them. Own your day. Shyan will then guide the students through quick applicable methods to help them learn how to combat low energy, poor attitude and behaviors that contribute to lack of progress. These will be tips on how stay focused while being present and excited about their opportunities in life - speaking directly to the persistence and resilience needed to navigate not just through school and higher education, but life in general. Create your future. In closing Shyan will then shine the light on practicing these habits into a disciplined form. This will include self esteem, using the imagination, and goal setting. These are applications Shyan personally developed and has utilized throughout his entire career as an artist and entrepreneur. Shyan will draw from his life experience to illustrate the parallels between education and academics and the career pathways that exist in the realms of the Music, Television, and Film business. Each appearance will be interlaced with small performances, swag bags and other essential tools.

15 Shyan is a co-founder of MIC: Music Industry Careers Event at PLU. So it was a natural fit to invite him as a featured guest along with Paula Boggs (former Sr. Vice President & Lead Counsel for Starbucks) for our inaugural event. I was very excited to have Shyan come present The Cafe Noir Project for PLU s students and faculty. The event provides our students an opportunity to learn about the music industry from someone who is more than just a performer. Shyan s community engagement intertwines beautifully with his passion and professional appreciation of music. And his stories resonate with PLU's mission. 16 For the annual Martin L. King celebration at Illahee, we were joined by celebrated former Illahee Brave and community activist Shyan Selah. After dismissal, there were a number of student that rushed to greet Shyan to ask questions. The most poignant was did you really go to Illahee? The requests for autographs using whatever was available ( including hands and arms) extended long past the bell for the next class. I want to do what he does, is a comment I heard several times during that day. The second question I heard often When is he coming back? Shyan Selah is a gift that the students grasped and held onto long after he left.
