3 Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Dallin Q: What hobby would you get into if time and money weren t an issue and why? A: I would make traveling a hobby. I would travel the world as a full time job if I could. Q: What are some small things that make your day better? A: I make my bed every morning. Q: What are you interested in that most people haven t heard of? A: I am fascinated with European Royalty. Not so much current Royals, but past. Q: What s something you ve been meaning to try but just haven t gotten around to it? A: Paddle Barding, I am hoping to do it this summer. Q: What s the best thing that happened to you last week? A: All of my grandbabies came for Sunday dinner. By: Isaac DeGraw

4 Student Spotlight 7th Grade Tony Castillo Tony s favorite subject is Math. He hasn t gone to any other school. His best friend is Javier Perralles lll. He likes to do programming, and his favorite sport is basketball. Augi Singleton Augi s favorite subject is Art Humanities. She went to Morton Hall Prep. before SAA. Her best friend is Kristen Winsett. She likes to play the guitar, and her favorite sport is Lacrosse.

5 8th Grade Student Spotlight Justin Law is an energetic, quiet, and an athletic person. He likes to spend his pass time playing Tim, his tuba, and drawing. What he draws is mostly fantasy, Anime, and people. His perfect weekend would consist of a lot of sleeping, eating and sometimes going to Lagoon. His most favorite thing in the world would have to be his bed and sleeping, because they will always be there for him. If he could meet anyone in the world dead or alive he would meet his Grandfather who he was really close to before he died in He would help him with absolutely everything and was the best person in the world. His favorite thing about the school is his math class because he is really good at it and he likes annoying Mikayla Veazie.

6 Lillian Mineer is a hardworking, strong, and awkward person. She loves to hangout with her friends, eat as much food as possible, and go somewhere fun on the weekends. She loves to paint her nails and binge watch TV shows, like Awkward and Jane the Virgin. Her most favorite thing in the world is being able to have friends and love people because it gets her through life and keeps her going. If she could meet anyone dead or alive in the world it would be Shawn Medenes because he is a really good singer and would love him to write a song about her *wink*. One thing she really likes about our school is that there are a lot of classes and she can learn lots of things.

7 Karter Merrill Student Spotlight What is one of your hobbies/passions, and why do you like it so much? I like to draw animals, especially dinosaurs. What are some of your wildest dreams you want to do in your life? I would like to be a Paleontologist. I would also one day make the movie, Jurassic Park a reality. What is something you would one day like to do? I would one day like to go Montana and dig for fossils.

8 Student Spotlight Ashley Bangerter What hobby would you like to get into if time and money weren t an issue. I would definitely go into dog breeding and training full time. I already have a Border Collie (Who should be pregnant). I have trained many things like dog agility and obedience. I love dogs and their willingness to please you. What are some small things that make your day better, and why? For one, my dog. She will sit and listen to me no matter what I say. My sister, we get along really well, she is my best friend, so I feel like I can tell her anything. What are you interested in that most people haven't heard of and why? Most people probably haven't heard that I actually really like acting. Because I am so shy and I don t do it very often, I get stage fright. What s something that you ve been meaning to try but just haven't gotten around to it and why? Something I ve always wanted is piano lessons. I think for most people their parents make them and they don t like it. But for me, I would do anything for piano lessons. However, one of the reasons why my mom won t let me is because I do so much other stuff like dog training and I run a bunny business.

9 Volunteer Spotlight Maddy Stephens has been volunteering at our school for the last couple months. She helps her mom with whatever she needs done first, then she will help with theatre, she also helps Mrs. Carbine. She is helping because of a few different reasons, she wanted to do home release and her mom told her that this was the only way to, she likes to help out, and she needs hours for the National Honors Society! 10 Club Spotlight: Chess Club The Chess Club meets every Monday and Thursday, From 3:10 to 4:30. Their coach is Mrs. Stephens. Here are some tips and information about chess and the class from the chess club. A general overview about chess: We play games and some of them are serious and some are just for fun. It s mostly a time for us to relax and get away from the stress of the day. -Anna What do you like about the class: We get to see our friends there and we can have good conversations with them that we wouldn t normally have during the day because we don t have time. -Anna What would you tell someone who was interested in chess but wasn t sure if they wanted to do it: Chess isn t just an analytical game, we don t just play chess it s a way to talk to people and connect with them. We also play checkers too, so if you don t like chess you (Continued on next page)

11 It is complicated to learn all the different moves of the pieces but then once you learn them it is really easy, unless you go into competitive because then it gets crazy. In this class we just play for fun and get to know people. Anna Some of the pieces and tips that are used in chess include: Pawns: they can be sacrifices but don t sacrifice them unless you have to. Queens: Can be useful, Don t get the queen killed unless it will get your opponent into checkmate. Checkmate: means that no matter what move your opponent makes they are in check. 12 Who Do You Look Up To And Why? By: Isaac DeGraw I look up to Mrs. Dallin because she s a great dance teacher. -Shaye Hampton, 9th I look up to Mrs. Barrett because she is smart and funny. -Kaylee Mejia, 8th I look up to Mrs. Olds because she is a great teacher. -Dallin West, 8th I look up to Bethie Bishop because she s a broken car, and the best gal on the block. -Lindsey Smith, 9th I look up to Mrs. Read because she keeps me positive and doesn t let me feel down. -Ariana Gonzalez, 7th I look up to people who chase their dreams, Because they are willing to risk falling to get where they want to go. They are willing to put in the work. I admire that they can give themselves a sense of motivation. -Anna Christiansen, 8th

13 St. Patrick's Day: Gladly or Sadly Saint Patrick s day is an Irish holiday that is on March 17th. The purpose of the holiday is to remember St Patrick, known as the patron saint of Ireland. He has become an important part of Irish heritage for ministering Christianity in Ireland during the fifth century. Some people have some mixed feelings about it, so I asked two people about their opinions. I asked Isaac DeGraw about whether or not he wanted it to be a holiday celebrated in schools. He said, It shouldn t be a holiday because it is lame and you just wear green and pinch people. Then I went to Mrs. Law, Mrs. Carbine s #1, and asked her if she thought it should be a holiday celebrated in school. She said, Yes. I like green, it brings out the color of my eyes. The answers that I received made me realize that people are not informed about the basic history of Saint Patrick s day.

14 Should students be allowed to use their phones during class? By: Colton Williams During school, students aren't aloud to use their phones. They are supposed to be in the students lockers and on silent or off. But there are also people debating on whether students should be able to use their phones during school. So, I asked some students if they think that phones should be aloud to be used during school. Kyler Carbine said, No, I think with phones being used during school, there will be a lot more bullying going on with photos and social media. Then I asked Isaac Love and he said, I think phones should be used in school because they can be used if there is an emergency and you need help. Also, I think that they could help if you need to look something up for your class or use as a calculator. But, only responsible students should have permission to use their phones and if they get caught using it the wrong way they shouldn't have permission. All About Cheer Tryouts and Boot Camp By: Sydnee Dahl Cheer boot camp will be held on February 27 and 28 from 4:00 to 6:00. You will get into groups of 3 to 4 to learn a dance, cheer, chant, and a jump sequence. Shaye and Breklyn say it s a really fun experience to see if you have what it takes to join the team. You will also get to do a mock tryout and get scored as if you were really trying out. It only costs $15.00 if you sign up before February 26 th but if you still want to join the day of, it will cost $ Come wearing shorts with no pockets or buckles, a t-shirt, gym shoes, and you hair up in a ponytail if you have long hair. Tryouts themselves are close to the end of March. When asked if it s worth the time to put in the hard work Shaye said, It was so worth it and a plus is you make a lot of friends.

16 History Day Mrs. Riplinger says History day is a national event that s been going on for a long time. It gives people a chance to do real historical research and share their findings in a variety of ways: a website, a poster, a paper, or even a performance. In March, there is a regional day up at Weber State that we get to send projects to. Whoever wins there will move up to the state level in April. Then they can move up to a national level. You can get prizes such as cash or even scholarships. It is a lot of work, but the students say that it is totally worth it. By: Saige Stock and Alivia Schilling

17 March Memories Mrs. Olds did a project with her ninth grade students where they had to use their own mind maps to find their way around the school. These images depict the adventure of some of the students during this event. These are images from the National History Day event that the ninth grade Honors English class participated in.
