2 Page 2 NEW ENGLAND DAYLILY SOCIETY NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 2015 Editor s Comments Hopefully you all enjoyed a wonderful bloom season. With the cold and snowy winter we experienced last winter, I was surprised peak bloom appeared to be right about on time this summer. Nature seems to have a way of adjusting. And I think that having such an extreme winter makes summer that much more enjoyable, don t you? We have a great day planned for our next meeting on November 14th. In the morning Dan Pessoni will present the ribbons to the award winners from the daylily exhibition held by NEDS in July at Tower Hill. We ll also talk about the plans for the upcoming AHS Region 4 convention to be sponsored by NEDS on July 22-24, We hope to throw a great party for the Region and we could use your ideas and some volunteers. And speaking of volunteers, at our meeting we ll talk about the open positions in NEDS and we hope you ll consider volunteering to help. We ll share lunch at our annual Soup s On potluck (details below) and then hear about the great things hybridizer Dave Mussar from the Ontario Daylily Society is doing in the world of daylilies. This should be a great way to spend a fall day so we hope to see you there! Now that summer is behind us, it s time to look through the photos you took this summer to see if you have any you d like to enter in the photo contest we ll have in January. Look for the article in this newsletter for the details on how to enter. December 31st is the deadline so start looking to see if you can find some entries! -Respectfully, Marlene Harmon, Editor Soup s On Luncheon November 14th Every fall, members of NEDS look forward to our Soup s On potluck luncheon. Although the number of displayed scapes drops each year, I was pleased with this year s 159 entries, which provided the public with an adequate display of daylilies. Thanks to all those who took the time to contribute their scapes. Each year, the number of people attending increases this year, almost 1,000 people viewed our Exhibition. My sincere thanks to Mike Sczerzen for the setup of the show, to Leslie Nolan for Classification and Tabulation, to Adele Keohan for her help with Classification and her work in producing the awards, and finally, to our ladies from Pepperell, Denise Pavlovich, Jean Doherty, and Janet McOsker, for coordinating an excellent luncheon for the Exhibition workers.
