1 Coaching Staff BRENDA VLASAK HEAD COACH (3RD SEASON) University of Arkansas, 2002 Brenda Vlasak is in her third season as a coach for the Northern Colorado tennis program. Vlasak spent the first two years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head women's coach for the season after Rosemary Fri was named Director of Tennis. Vlasak grew up in Colorado and as a junior was ranked No. 2 nationally in girls' 14 and under. She played No. 1 singles at Tyler Junior College for two years as she helped her squad win a pair of NJCAA titles. During her sophomore season Vlasak compiled a 34-5 singles and a 35-5 doubles record. She then transferred to the University of Arkansas where she played No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. Vlasak was an All-Academic SEC selection for the Lady Razorbacks and graduated with a 3.8 GPA. She was ranked No. 90 in the 2001 Preseason ITA singles poll and jumped to No. 72 in the rankings midway through the spring season. In the summer of 2001, she advanced to the NCAA Tournament in doubles. Vlasak graduated from Arkansas with a degree in kinesiology in After completing her collegiate career, Vlasak decided to pursue her master's and coach at the collegiate level. "I feel like I have had lots of good coaching from various people throughout my life," Vlasak said. "I have learned a lot and am very excited to apply my knowledge to our athletes and coach them through the season." Vlasak completed her master's degree in sport administration at Northern Colorado in May of ROSEMARY FRI DIRECTOR OF TENNIS Rosemary Fri serves as the coordinator of the UNC tennis programs and has coached the women's team since the year of its inception. During her tenure, the UNC women have compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including two fourth-place showings at the NCAA Division II Championships (1983, 1992). The women's team has also notched 18 top-20 rankings and won 16 conference or regional championships. Fri has coached two singles national champions, one singles runner-up, three doubles national champions, one doubles runner-up, and 15 All-Americans. In 2001, the UNC women's team won its 11th consecutive North Central Conference title and its 12th conference championship in the past 13 years. The Bears qualified for the NCAA Division II Team Championships 10 of the 11 years from Over the years, Fri has been recognized often for her accomplishments. In 1981 and 1992 she received the Wilson Coach of the Year Award. In 1992 the Colorado Sportswomen also honored Fri as Coach of the Year. She was named the 1994 Division II Midwest Regional Coach of the Year and has been recognized by the North Central Conference on several occasions. Fri was one of eight inducted into the first class of the UNC Athletic Hall of Fame in Her 1983 women's tennis squad was inducted into the UNC Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of On Feb. 21, 2003, Fri was inducted into the Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame.

2 2 Season Preview The University of Northern Colorado women s tennis team begins its second year of Division I play in and first year under new head coach Brenda Vlasak. Vlasak had served as the Bears assistant coach the previous two season. Long-time head coach Rosemary Fri has stepped aside from the coaching duties and will serve as the Director of Tennis. The Northern Colorado women posted an 11-7 mark in the first-year of Division I tennis last season. This year s squad will look to keep the program on the same winning path as the Bears play a full Division I schedule. The biggest loss from last season s squad was four-year starter Jan Ikeda. Ikeda posted a career singles record of and a career doubles record of The Bears return three letterwinners from last year. The returnees include senior Julia McPherson, sophomore Renee Nuccio and sophomore Meredith Krystofik. Sophomore Meredith Krystofik will take over the No. 1 singles slot for the Bears in the season. Julia McPherson is the lone senior on this year s UNC women s tennis squad. Nuccio was a first-team All-Independent selection after tallying a singles mark of 15-7 at No. 3 singles. Nuccio also earned first-team All-Independent honors in doubles with Ikeda. The Nuccio-Ikeda combo notched a 12-8 doubles mark last season. Krystofik was a second-team All-Independent pick at No. 2 singles after recording a mark of McPherson played a majority of her matches at the No. 5 singles position last season. McPherson posted a singles mark of McPherson has an overall singles record of in her three seasons at UNC. Vlasak will mix in three new starters into the lineup this season. Newcomers Karen Groll, Carmen Vasos and Kellie Crail will fill out the other three spots in this year s starting singles lineup. Groll is a freshman from Tucson, Ariz. Groll was a team captain for her Catalina Foothills prep team. Vasos is freshman from Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins. Vasos earned all-state honors all four years as a prep player. Crail is a sophomore transfer from Air Force. Crail was a 2003 graduate of Iolani High School in Waipahu, Hawaii. The Bears will have a very young squad in Krystofik, Groll and Nuccio will all by vying for the No. 1 singles slot. Vasos, McPherson and Crail will all battle for the No. 4-6 singles positions. In doubles action, Vlasak will look to pair up Krystofik and Groll as well Vasos and Nuccio. Those two pairings will look to battle it out for the No. 1 doubles slot. McPherson and Crail will fill out the other doubles pairing. The women will play a full Division I schedule that will include Utah, Montana State, Montana, Air Force, Iowa State, Drake, Northern Iowa, Weber State, Northern Arizona, Denver, UTEP, Wyoming and Colorado State. The Bears will also play host to the NCAA Division I Independent Championships on April Northern Colorado will host Texas-Pan American, IPFW and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the tournament that will be held at Centennial Park in Greeley. The Bears played in the tournament last season in Corpus Christi and came home with a mark of 2-1. The women s squad will also produce in the classroom as its 3.72 team grade point average from the fall can attest.
