A different type of meeting to showcase what the Midwest Miniature Guild is. Instead of classes, we ll have lots of separate, individual demonstrations. We will have vendors, auctions, Karen Fernholz of Little Enchantments selling items in the afternoon, surprises, and, of course, our library. A couple of rules for the October meeting: 1. We should be able to seat at least 128 attendees. That s 16 tables of eight. Guild members will be registered first. Guests will fill remaining spots. 2. We will limit one guest per Guild member. If we have space, we can accommodate more. There seems to be some confusion about where the money is coming from to pay for the free meeting for members and guests. We are waiving the $22.50 usual meeting fee and there will be no charge for the demonstrations. The board has been very frugal and careful with our money. Our bank account is very healthy and that s where the money is coming from to cover the free meeting. None of the money from John & Bella Sanders bequest will pay for our free meeting. Do bring money! We ll have some pretty fabulous auctions that you will want to bid on and our vendors will be there to tempt you with their wares. President s Letter continues on page 2 1
2 President s Letter (Continued from page 1) The Guild received $12,000 because of the generosity of John & Bella. What will we do with that money? One suggestion is bringing in an artisan for a meeting for a special project that all members can participate in. What are your ideas? me and we ll discuss in October. We ll have plenty of tables to display your current projects, so please bring what you ve recently completed. We are still looking for people to help set up displays, for lunch table set up and for serving lunch. Let me know where you can help. I just returned from the 2017 NAME National Convention that was held in Alexandria, VA. I m always renewed after seeing the fabulous exhibits and artisans there. It s fun to renew friendships with other miniaturists from around the country, take workshops, and participate in fun events. If you don t know about NAME, talk to Kathy Goettsch (our NAME State Rep.), me, or several other Guild members that also belong to NAME. I hope to see you October! If you have questions, want to volunteer or have ideas - let me know. I m an or phone call away. Jane Sanem, President Midwest Miniature Guild janeannsanem@gmail.com MIDWEST MINIATURE GUILD GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES Shoreview Community Center, May 6, 2017 The meeting was called to order at 12:20 by President, Jane Sanem. 5 New Member Get Together Our third New Member Get-Together was held on Saturday, March 25. It was a small group of new members Elyse Phillips, Sherry Zittlow and Sue George. The Guild board was represented by Jane Sanem (President), Brad Bradshaw (Librarian) and Freya Jacobson (Membership). Although small in numbers, we had great discussions and got to know everyone better. The Get-Together was held in Brad s party room. Brad outdid himself! The beautiful tablecloth candles and flowers were a backdrop for a sumptuous lunch of soup, salad, and a cake for dessert. We had gifts and mini magazines for our new members. We hope to make this an annual event in the early months of each year. Pictured from left to right are Freya Jacobson, Brad Bradshaw, Elyse Phillips, Sherry Zittlow and Sue George. 6 Miniature Inspirations MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ART DOLLHOUSE By Sue Taylor The Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) has a wonderful dollhouse in its collection and it is worth seeing in person. The dollhouse is quite large and is filled with so many treasures it is hard to appreciate them all in one visit. The dollhouse fact sheet reads as follows: This dollhouse originally belonged to St. Paul native Mary Griggs Burke ( ). It was a gift to Mary from her mother, Mary Livingston Griggs ( ). The large house has electric lighting and running water in the kitchen and bathroom. With its high Palladian windows, the dollhouse may have been based on the Italianate style of the Burbank- Livingston-Griggs House on St. Paul s Summit Avenue. Each room showcases figurines, miniature furniture, and household accoutrements that Mary and her mother collected over the course of several decades. This early experience of searching for miniature objects in the shops in St. Paul and during family travels may have encouraged Mary s enthusiasm for collecting later in her life. She eventually became a tireless art collector, amassing one of the world s greatest collections of Japanese art. The dollhouse was a gift from the Mary Livingston Griggs and Mary Griggs Burke Foundation and received from the estate of Mary Griggs Burke. General admission to the museum is free. If you would like more Information about visiting MIA it can be found online at 6

8 WHY TALK ABOUT CHICAGO INTERNATIONAL NOW? By Mary Breslin Chicago International (informally known as the Tom Bishop show) will be held in late April So why talk about it now? Read on and see First, what is Chicago International? If you guessed an airport, you are also correct, but for miniaturists Chicago International is a very large miniatures show possibly the largest in the world. It is produced by Tom Bishop, who has produced miniature shows for 39 years. (Read more about the history of this and his other miniatures shows here: ) Together with his wife, Leni, Tom brings miniatures dealers from 20 countries and 32 states to Chicago each year. (To see the list of vendors for the 2018 International show, use this address: OK, but why talk about it now if it doesn t happen until next April? One reason is that if you plan on attending, you can already book your hotel room at the special show price. (Here s the page of Tom s website that has a link to book a room: ) Another reason is that by the time this article appears in print, you will (if past years are a good predictor) be able to register for workshops Monday Thursday before the vendors begin selling their truly amazing assortment of minis. The workshops are typically very high quality. Many of the teachers are IGMA (International Guild of Miniature Artisan) fellows, some are vendors, and some are both! Finally, another reason to talk about this now is that there are approximately 500 preview tickets sold, and on occasion they have sold out months Miniature Wood Creations Patrick Kinney Chicago International continue on page 9 Mora, MN Pkinney@miniaturewoodcreations.com Veteran Owned 8
9 Chicago International (Continued from page 8) before the show. The preview ticket costs $25 and entitles the ticket holder to a full day of shopping (that s Friday, April 27, 2018) before the show opens to the general public. As a little bonus, you also get a one-hour window to shop on Saturday, before the public hours. It s also probably worth mentioning that two other miniatures shows run at the same time as the Bishop show. There is a shuttle that runs between the three shows; here are the websites of the other two shows: Three Blind Mice The Miniatures Show Chicago International is one of the highlights of the miniature year for a number of your fellow guild members; we typically get together Friday evening and show off what we bought or made during the week. Come and join the fun! SNAPSHOTS FROM THE FEBRUARY MEETING 9
10 WORKSHOPS DEMONSTRATIONS At the October 2017 meeting there will be free demonstrations instead of workshops. Remember that October is the time to renew your Guild membership for Be sure to fill out the membership renewal form and join us for another fun year in miniatures! 10
