Mke Herndon, the REC of Frazer, has been workng dlgently to try and reduce the amount of vandalsm n the buldng. Along wth the assstance of the presdents of the three fraterntes housed n Fra/er, Frazer HallCouncl, and Resdent Assstants, Herndon has mplemcntcdaprogramcallcd"frazcr Watch" to help reduce vandalsm n the buldng. Frazer Watch s a student-run organzaton that montors the buldng n an attempt to make people consder the consequences of ther actons before destroyng property or to catch the gulty party n the act of vandalzng. These students patrol the buldng Thursday-Saturday between the hours of 10:00p.m. and 2:00a.m. Herndon says. "Although t does not seem the amount of vandalsm has been reduced, the Frazer Watch program has created more opportuntes to catch the ndvduals that arc vandalzng our buldng." He hopes that n tme people wll realze that others are watchng and ndvduals wll be held accountable for ther own actons, whch many members of the Longwood communty wll help reduce the amount of destructon n the buldng drastcally. Snce the formaton of Frazer Watch, many students are makng t ther responsblty to watch for acts of vandalsm and reportng them to propsf authortes A number of ncdents have been reported drectly to ether RA's or Herndon by resdents, and others have even left anonymous notes n Hcmdon's offce explanng the vandalsm that occurred, along wth a name of the gulty party. "Students are becomng more aware of what s gong on and students arc feelng more nclned to turn people n because they arc tred of payng for the rresponsble actons of others," says Herndon. Last semester, the most common acts of vandalsm had been stolen or rpped screens n hall and starcase wndows and replacng celng tles. Although those are the most common, there have been many more cosuy expenses, such as: broken elevators due to overcrowdng, broken water fountan, stolen vacuum cleaner, damaged doors, dscharged fre extngushers, and excessve trash n hallways and starcases. Some resdents of Frazer feel that much of the vandalsm s done by nonresdents after socal events that have occurred n the buldng. Herndon s presently workng on new ways to control the problems that may be lnked to the socal events 10 ensure that non-resdents as well as resdents do not vandalze the buldng. A hs most recent suggestons and recommendatons, some of whch have already been mplemented, nclude: lockng common room doors n lobby, checkng D's at front door n lobby, enforcng polcy of resdents escortng ther guests, mantanng desk hours untl 4a.m. on weekends, not allowng socal organzatons to schedule smultaneous events, havng fraterntes desgnate members to assst n crowd control and checkng D's n lobby arcasdurng socal events, montor the use of securty keys by non resdents, lockng frontdoors on weekends and have campus polce assst wth entry nto the buldng after socal events, and enforcng party regulaton polces. Many students feel that f each ndvdual makes t a part of ther responsblty to report vandalsm n all resdence halls, t wll greatly reduce the costs ncurred. Women's colleges reap bumper crop of applcants NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) Whether from a new femnsm or changng socal mores, some women's colleges - once vewed as an endangered speces - are reapng a bumper crop of applcants, school offcals say. "What we could be seeng s that women's colleges are movng back nto the manstream," sad Mary Maples Dunn, presdcntof Smth College. "We were more out of the manstream when people were thnkng that coeducaton was the way to go." Ths year's applcatons at the Northampton women's school have already reached a record of more than 2.9(X), up 10 percent over last year, accordng to B. Ann Wrght, do.n ol enrollment. Offcals a several Other women's schools, ncludng Frst Lady Hllary Rodham Clnton's alma mater, Wccsc) College, also reported ncreases Thursday. Wellesley s up 14 percent ove last year, Barnard 12 percent, Bryn Mawr 8 percent, and Mount Holyokc at least 4 percent, accordng to school offcals. They suggest several factors that may be heghtenng acceptance of women's college changed objectves and broader accopt.uu o of femnsm, long lermsocalchangessuchasmora dvort os and women n the work force, a larger number of women n hgher educaton, recent role models such as Mrs Clnton and Anta Hll,and wdc- Spread publk t) OUT S natonal report last year that documented sex bas n classrooms. "Fve years ago, the knd of stores you would see n the press were what we would refer to jokngly as: 'How long can ths dnosaur go on?'" sad Debra Thomas, a spokesman for Bryn Ma wr, the women' s college n a Pcnn sylvana town of that name. The number of women's colleges n the Unted Stales dropped from a peak of 298 n 1960 to 84 today, accordng to the Women's College Coalton n Washngton, D.C. Half closed, and the other half turned coed, wth most of those changes comng n the 1960s and early 1970s. Between 1986 and 1992, enrollment at women's colleges, nearly all prvato. grew 3.5 percent to 85,800. The ncrease was modest compared to the 13 percent rse n overall enrollment of men and women at prvate schools durng the same perod, accordng to statsucan Norman Brandt at de U.S. Offce of Educaton Research. However, some offcals sad Thursday they had only begun to sec sgnfcant ncreases last year. Smth College offcals, who set up a commttee n the 1970s to study Or, optng men, felt confdent enough for the frst tme ths year to market the school largely as a place for women. "t's where women come frst and do best," blares the latest Smth brochure. Though former Frst Lades Barbsn Bush and Nancy Reagan went to Smth, the college had prevously blled tself manly as a lop lberal arts nsttuton, the enrollment dean sad Dunn beleves the school, wth an enrollment of 2,500 women, has benefted as the share of women enrolled n hgher educaton, compared to mon. rose from 30 percent n 1950 to 52 percent loday. She also sad that the growng numbers of broken famles and women n the work force have "ncreased awareness... nto what young women arc gong to need through ther lves." Female educators also sad that some femnst thnkers are takng a now look at the value of separate educaton for women. "There has been a knd of aboutface," sad Jadwga Sebrechts, drector of the Women's College Coallon. "There's been a realzaton that... openng the doors and puttng women n the desks... next to the men dd not ensure equalty of educatonal experence.'' A report by the Wellesley Cento lo Research on Women, released ago, documented sex bas aganst women n classrooms. Janet Lavn, drector of admsson at Wellesley, sad the publcty from that report and Mrs. Clnton, a 1969 graduate who talks readly about de school, have helped promote nterest n mat school. "Hllary has made a dfference n our applcant pool ths year," Lavm sad "We're very grateful for the publcty she has gven us " Constructon hot topc on campus By Debbe Wlson Rotunda Staff The offce of the Vce Presdent for Busness Affars s n charge of delegatng money to those areas J and on campus that need t and for dealng wth the busness aspects of runnng the college. On campus, constructon s a hot topc snce the buldng of ARC, the nc,w dormtory, and the ncreasng student enrollment. At the top of the lst s the renovaton of Hncr and Rulfner. Snce these changes are state funded, and the slate s gvng loss money to colleges and unverstes, they may not lake place n the mmedate future. The next major change wll be the constructon of an addtonal dnng hall. Ths may take place sooner than the renovatons, however, because l wll be funded through student fees. Plans for constructon to begn arc set for he academc year, wth the openng set for the academc year. Currently, our two dnng halls logcdcr only feed 2300 students at a tme. The new one would hold The new dnng hall wll be bult next to lcr, where a basketball court and parkng lot s currently located. The outsde wll be remodeled to look lke a new buldng. Presently, the school s workng on campus bcaulfcaton, ncludng projects lke the buldng of a new gateway and the baseball feld. Durng Chrstmas break, 18 trees were planted throughout the campus. The gateway s currently under constructon at the corner of Rcdford Street and Man Street, next to Curry and Frazer. The baseball feld s ncarng completon wth the nstallment of the bleachers. The other bg plan for ths semester s an RP, or request for proposal, for anautomauc tcllcrmachne. Ths wll probably be nstalled on the ground floor of Lankford on the Stubbs' sde. The busness affars offce also oversees everythng from the mantenance of buldngs and grounds, shppng and reccvng.and the Rolf course to constructon of new buldngs, purchasng, personnel, settng tuton, and legslatve procedures and correspondence. Just about the only thng ths offce s not n charge of, monetarly, s prntng, telecommuncatons, and fnancal ad. Educatonal achevement test to be gven locally Thrty three Longwood College students from the educaton department wll be performng educatonal achevement tests on students from the local areas. These educatonal tests wll examne the students' levels n subjects such as the language arts, ncludng readng and spellng, scence, arthmetc, and other subjects. Headng and supervsng those tests wll be Dr. Terry Overlon of the specal educaton department. She s responsble for takng the appontments for testng durng the perod of February thrteenth 10 the twentyfourth of Aprl. All testng wll be done over the weekends on the Longwood College campus. Snce de testng s done as an educatonal experence for the educa- ton majors, there wll be no fees charged to the parents. Generally, most testng of (Jus sort, when done prvately, can cost up twenty-fve hundred dollars. Thscos s occasonally covered by nsurance companes. However, f the prce s too hgh lor the testng to be done prvately, the parents can go through the local communty school system. Yet, they wll have to relnqush ther prvacy as all test results wll go to de school. Of course, the man beneft for de parents s that the educatonal testng done at Longwood wll show them the educaton level ther chld s on. Ths wll enable the parent to follow the progress of ther chld and sec where strengths and weaknesses le. Bachelor of Fne Arts elmnates foregn language requrement By Carol Semonos Staff Wrter Recently, the requrements for a Bachelor of Fne Arts <k gree at Longwood have been changed to exclude the foregn language requre mert Professor Mark Baldrdge, head of the Art Department, sad dal n the process of fulfllng the three-credt requrement at a 202 level or above, art students had to neglect the electve* whch relate drectly to ther felds ol study. Ths change came about alto a study of the Bachelor of Fne Alts programs at odcr colleges. The nvestgatng commttee found that a majorty, f not all of thl schools, dd not requre Art majors to take the foregn languages. Doctor Baldrdge also sad that de BRA. tends to be neglected as a separate degree and somewhere down the lne, after beng clumped wth the B.A., was gven smlar requrements.

3 Page 2 The Rotunda February 10,1993 PERSPECTVES Great volunteer opportunty arses There s gong to be ;t marvelous opportunty comng for a number of dedcated Longwood students. Ths Sprng break, rather than spendng tme at the beach or some other vacaton spot, students should consder volunteerng ther tme and effort n makng the world a lttle bt better for those less fortunate: they should contemplate becomng nvolved n the Alternatve Sprng Break program. Bascally, ths s an opportunty for a group of students to travel to Kentucky to get nvolved n the Habtat for Humanty program there. There s a cost nvolved, but probably no more than most of you wre plannng to spend on your holday revels. Trey Persall, organzer of the event, has spent many hours n recent months coordnatng volunteer efforts for ths, as well as other communty projects. He more than anyone realzes the mportance of volunteer work, not only n helpng to create a belter world (dealstc as t sounds, ths s the case), but also n ts role as a confdence and skll bulder. n a stuaton such as ths ever} person who s nvolved benefts. The plaques n the dnng hall and Rotunda area commemorate the Greeks because of ther mportant contrbutons to campus. Several sorortes were founded at Longwood, and that s a part of the hstory of the college that deserves to be acknowledged. The Greek affars coordnator s mportant because the Greeks need to be unfed and organzed. Longwood advertses tse11 as beng a "communty."and hcgrcck affars coordnator helps to brng everyone together. The Greek system s often put down and thought to be harmful to the Longwood communty. 4 The Rotunda February 10,1993 Page 3 Classes+roomates + lfe = By Debbe Wlson Staff Wrter Along wth the stress of college classes comes the stress ol college lfe. Among other thngs, ths ncludes havng a roommate for possbly the frst tme n one's lfe. And t's not always possble to lve wth someone n such close quarters, whether you get along wth the person or not. When asked about ther worst roommate experences, some students were hestant to tell ther stores. No one wanted ther names dsclosed for fear of retrbuton. One story was told nvolved three roommates. Two of them decded to gang up aganst the thrd. Whenever the thrd roommate would leave the room, she would always leave her desk lght on. The other two got fed up wth ths and decded to break her lghtbulbeach tme she left t on. Once ths got old, the two roommates would fnd ollrcr ways to torture the thrd, such as by throwng her pumpkn out the wndow. 8 Page7 n Kotuula Anyone who has ever known shame and wanted to start lfe anew wll recognze a lttle glmpse of hmself n "Sommersby," the story of one man's quest to do just that. When Jack Sommersby (Rchard Gere) returns to hs plantaton n Vne Hll,Tenn, after sx yearsof fghtng n thec vl War, he returns a changed man. Once harsh and volent, Sommersby seems chastened by the war and eager to wn back the love of hs lfe, Laurel (Jode Foster). Laurel has had to endure her own share of hardshp- rasng ther young son by herself and tryng to farm ther barren land. t seems the only comfort she's had was from famly frend Orn Meccham (Bll Pullman), who was hopng to wn her over for hmself. At frst, the exchanges between Sommersby and hs wfe arc tentatve, ther tmng awkward. And Sommersby doesn't seem to remember that before he left, they slept n separate beds. However ther stffness dssolves when Sommcrshv has Laurel shave off hs matted beard to reveal the new man beneath t. Drector Jon Amcl renders a bt of move magc wth ths scene: Laurel levels her long-smmerng anger, blade strokng the coarse har from hs neck, whle Sommersby sts loudly vulnerable. The tmng and the tenson are perfect, and the outcome - a subtle spell of new found ntmacy - s almost palpable. Gere and Foster have a sweetly endearng chemstry as they dance and swrl about each other dscover ng a love they had never known. 1M fact, that love begns to seem as new and mysterous as Sommersby hmself. LSS3 NFORMATON s he n fad the same man or merely an mpostor? The famly dog doesn't seem to recognze hm, but all the townspeople do. Sommersby recalls lcslnrtheworeon hs weddng nght, how much hs father pad for a slave, the ncknamesol frends. But then the cobbler notces that hs foot s smaller than when he left, and Sommcrsby's sgnature has changed. Just who s ths man? Whoever the old Sommersby was, the new one s determned U> brng back hs fallow land and be a lovng husband to hs wfe and ther new daughter. And all would seem well untl he s arrested for kllng a man whle on hs hatus. Durng the tral, Sommersby and hs wle are forced 10 examne ther souls and detenu me w ha means the most to them, no matter what ther pasts or who they were. But ther soul-searchng could have tragc consequences Based on the flm 'The Return of Martn Guerre," "Sommersby" offers a slghtly more complex plot and a farly modfed storylne. f there are any flaws, t would be that Amel's pacng could have been faster - at lmes, the flm feels as long as a summer afternoon. But t's a lovely afternoon to look at. Flmed entrely n Vrgna, partly n Farmvllc, many of the scenes have a warm, ntmate feel, as f the sets were created from the pantngs of Mary C'assatt - you can almost smell the ham n the oven. n the end, "Sommersby" makes a compellng case about the prce of remakng one's name and reputaton. t's a tenderly affectng story n whch Gere and Foster offer ther performances n perfect mnuet: one turn delcate, the next turn gut-wrenchng. "Sommersby" was produced by Arnon Mlchan and Steven Rculhcr wth Gere and Magge Wlde as executve producers. t was wrtten by Ncholas Mcycrand Sarah Kcrnochan. The Wamer Bros, flm s rated PG-13. Rather ntmdatng for a basketball player. Yet hs Magc Johnson-lke smle and charmng personalty wll help you remember that Benj Webb s just one of the guys. As a young boy, he lved n England where he played soccer. When he moved to the Unted States, hs father forced hm to play basketball. Eventually, he pcked up the game and found that he could be one of the best. Webb played basketball at Tabb Hgh School n Yorktown, Vrgna. He «as a lour year hgh school varsty cttcrman. He also played n the state tournament hs freshman year wth another Tabb Hgh School great, Terry Krby (Unversty of Vrgna football player). Webb's most memorable hgh school basketball experence was durng hs senor year when he scored hs 1,000th pont. They stopped the game to gve hm the ball, and he threw t to hs father who was sttng n the stands. Besdes Longwood, Webb was recruted durng hs senor year by the Unversty ol Vrgna and Wake Forest Unversty as well. Asa hgh school center, Webb has had to adjust to beng a small forward and a shootng guard. He sad, "..de players arc much bgger and get shoved around a lot." Snce he's been here at Longwood, the coaches have had a bg nfluence on hm. Webb says that the coaches want you to work hard no matter who you are. Webb ponts out that junor Charles Brown has also been a key nfluence on hm. "He's got a lot of talent," sad Brown, "and all 've tred to do s gve hm confdence. He puts the ball on the floor really well for a man hs sze, and no one hts the offensve boards lke hm." When Longwood defeated Pfcffcr College (72-68), who at that tme was ranked 3rd n NAA Top 20, they not only beat a natonally ranked team, they ended Pfcffcr's home game wnnng streak. Webb's 10 ponts and 9 rebounds were key ngredents to Longwood's upset vctory. Webb sad, "That feelng ol beatng Pfcffer) wasoncof the best feelngs n my lfe. t was rght up there wth playng n the state tournament my freshman year [n hgh school]." Webb s currently averagng 7.2 ponts per game and has the team's best feld goal percentage httng 53.7% peaent of hs shots. As a starter, he's averagng 11.7 ponts per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. He's the team's thrd leadng rebounder and has been the leadng scorer n four games ths season. Webb has'started n sx games and played n all twenty-two. More mportantly, Webb s a smrjej-athlete. Last semester he had one of the hghest grade pont averages on the team wth a 3.2. Webb s an art major, and he sad f a professonal basketball career sn't possble, he'd lke to lve n a bg cty workng n commercal art, Benj Webb s a very posed ndvdual both on and off the court. He dsplays grace under pressure and hs ntmdatng presence s felt the second he steps on the lloor. Off the floor hs charmng presence s felt the second he steps on the lloor. Off the floor hs charmng presence s felt when he steps n the room He's truly a unque ndvdual.
