Churchill Cheerleading/Mascot Guidelines *Please sign the WC Cheer/Mascot Guideline Agreement that follows* Every Churchill cheerleader/mascot will be expected to comply with the following guidelines. The guidelines take effect now. I. Practices A. Dress Code 1. You must be in your designated practice attire while in class and practice. (Every cheerleader, regardless of eligibility, must be dressed appropriately at practice or they may not be eligible to participate) 2. All cheerleaders must be completely and correctly dressed out and ready to go at the start of practice. 3. If you lose or ruin any part of your practice uniforms, you will be responsible for replacing it. 4. Hair must always be up in a ponytail. If hair is not in a ponytail, the entire team will condition. 5. No jewelry at practice. Once practice begins, all jewelry must be off! 6. At no time, unless specified by the coach, may a member practice without shoes. Please bring to class running shoes on the assigned days so that we can run. You will not be excused from running because you forgot your running shoes. 7. Failure to meet any of the guidelines listed above will result in demerits and/or conditioning. 8. In addition to toe-touches and demerits for being late, a cheerleader can also receive toetouches/tumbling for wearing the wrong practice outfit at any after school practices or gym practices. (10 toe touches/bhs s for each wrong item.) 9. All toe-touches/conditioning/tumbling must be completed after practice. Time will not be taken out of the team time because you are late. 10. MASCOTS: Make sure you are in appropriate, cool clothing when wearing the suit. B. Behavior 1. Arrive early. You will do 10 toe-touches/back handsprings/back tucks for every minute you are late. (Maximum of 100) After ten minutes, you will receive 3 demerits along with all of the toetouches. 2. No eating or chewing gum is allowed at practice/in class. 3. You will be given water and bathroom breaks as a group at designated times. Do not take your own water and bathroom breaks when you feel like it. Always ask. 4. At Champions, you should not take practice time to socialize with parents. If a bathroom break has been approved, go to the bathroom and come right back. 5. You may not use cell phones at practice or any cheer activity. Ringers must be off and phones put away. If you must use the phone during a break, you must ask a coach. [Even if you are injured or sick, you do not need to be on your phone during practice.] 6. No talking while the coach/head cheerleaders are talking or when someone is performing. 7. All practices are mandatory! 8. No talking during stretches. 9. Failure to attend a practice may result in pulling you from the performance for that week. 10. All members will be required to attend and participate in tumbling and stunting practices at Champions at the scheduled times. We will run it as a structured practice. 11. Keep talking to a minimum.

12. No sitting at practices or gym practices except when told by the instructor. 13. Stay in line and ready for your turn during tumbling. If you are not ready due to talking or being off task, it will result in 1 demerit, conditioning, and/or lose of turn. 14. For safety reasons, absolutely no talking while stunting. Besides calling the dismount, only the coaches and the head/co-head cheerleaders are permitted to talk during this time! No laughing while stunting. 15. School practices will be closed to everyone. Do not invite family, boyfriends, friends, etc. at any time. If it is a designated time for family and friends to watch, the coach will let you know. If your family, friends, etc, enter the facility during practice, it is your responsibility to remind them that practices are closed and ask them to leave. 16. While at Champions gym, guests may sit in designated areas, provided they do not become a distraction. Guests are never allowed in the gym area. 17. At no time during practice, may your talk to anyone other than your instructors and other cheerleaders. This includes gym practices. 18. Do not leave your stuff in any facility. 19. Pick up all trash from the facility before leaving. Trash left behind will result in team conditioning. 20. Cheer lockers must be closed at all times. Failure to do so will result in team conditioning. 21. You are always expected to give 100%. If there is any reason you are unable to do this (injury, illness, etc.), you must bring a note from a parent and/or doctor explaining the problem before practice begins. You are still expected to be at practice if the illness permits. 22. Everyone must always try and improve all skills. 23. In order to be excused from a specific activity for a prolonged amount of time, you will be required to provide the coach with a doctor s note specifying the prohibited activity and the anticipated date of return to regular activity. Please see NEISD constitution for further instructions. 24. Depending on the restrictions of the injury and length of the restrictions, the cheerleader may be removed from a competition team, performances, and other activities. 25. Anyone who is disruptive or disrespectful during practice will be asked to leave and be given 5 demerits (automatic spirit probation). Remember that you are expected to be respectful to not only the cheer coach, but tumbling and stunting coaches, head cheerleader(s), and teammates as well. 26. MASCOTS: At the beginning of every class, ask coach what is expected of you that day. Be sure to dress out on designated days. C. Study Hall 1. A class study hall will be given from time to time depending on what is going on during that time of year. A cheerleader can be prepared for this by bringing any school work with her to cheer class. During study hall, no phones are allowed to be out. All cheerleaders will be working silently and individually in their designated spot. No one is allowed to put on makeup or do their hair during this time. 2. Every Monday, it is the responsibility of the student to print out her grades, sign them, and place them in their folder. II. Absences A. School Year 1. If you are going to be absent from a practice/class, you must follow two steps in order for the absence to be considered for being excused. a. Step one: A parent (not the cheerleader) /call before the practice begins b. Step two: Follow up with a note from parent and/or doctor when you return

2. *You must come to practice if possible, as long as the illness is not contagious you don t want to miss anything!* 3. If you leave during the school day, you still must notify the coach before the practice begins. 4. Even if you are absent from school, you must still follow the two steps listed above in order for the absence to be excused. 5. Excused absences include: a. personal illness (serious/contagious) or accident b. funeral or death in the family c. special school activities which are approved in advance by the coach d. religious holidays e. weddings in the immediate family *Absences, for other reasons, will be considered unexcused absences.* *All appointments (doctors, dentists, tutoring, etc.) must be scheduled around practice time. These appointments are not considered excused absences unless they are an emergency. 6. Competition practice absences are included in the competition guidelines. 7. Unexcused absences from any game, practice, performance, or activity, will result in one or more of the following: a. Sitting out of a performance/game b. 3 demerits III. Uniforms You are representing Churchill High School at all times while in uniform, therefore you must display appropriate behavior and be a positive role model. 1. No PDA while in any part of your uniform, jackets, or practice clothes!! This will result in demerits per spirit handbook. 2. No nail polish while in uniform. This includes shellac. Demerits will be issued and the nail polish must be removed before you can cheer. 3. No chewing gum while in uniform. 4. Hair on game days and at games will be determined each week. If a cheerleader does not have hair in correct fashion or correct bow, she will not be permitted to cheer. 5. No jewelry in uniform while at any game or performance. 6. On game days, cheerleaders may only wear their senior rings while in uniform. This is never allowed in practice and never to the games/performances. 7. If you are wearing the wrong uniform or missing any uniform part, you will not be allowed to cheer/perform, thus jeopardizing your stunt group. 8. Uniforms may only be worn at school sanctioned events approved by the cheer coach. Do not ever wear them in public places. As per spirit handbook, a cheerleader must change before going out after games/events. 9. Only current cheerleaders may wear Churchill Cheerleading uniforms. Do not allow your friends, family, or anyone else to wear your uniforms at any time. 10. Never change on the school bus. 11. If you lose or ruin any part of your district uniforms, you must pay for the lost item before you are issued another one. If you lose a purchased item, you must purchase another to replace it. 12. All district uniforms not purchased will be returned at the end of the year clean and in good condition. A fee may be assessed if the uniform has to be fixed or cleaned. 13. Because district uniforms will be passed out each year, under no circumstance will they be altered on your own. Seams are not to be cut at any time. 14. Remember, when you are in uniform, you represent the school, the district, all of the cheerleaders, and the coach. Act like ladies and gentlemen, and be good role models!

IV. Games/Performances 1. On game days, cheerleaders will be inspected by the coach and head cheerleaders before the start of first period. 2. You must be fully dressed in complete uniform (bows, shoes, etc.) before you get on the bus! 3. Cheerleaders/Mascots will not be allowed to leave campus at the end of the day on game days. Food will be offered for any of the cheerleaders/mascots to purchase. 4. Food from the concession stand will not be allowed during games. At no time will a parent or friend be allowed to bring food or a drink to a cheerleader/mascot. Absolutely no eating during a game! 5. Cheerleaders must bring their own water bottle. You will not be allowed to cheer until you have your red cheer water bottle filled with water in front of you on the track. 6. Only bring your Churchill cheer bag to all games/events (no purses on track or in the stands). Everything you bring must be kept in your bag. 7. Always be sure you have your megaphone and your poms for all games. 8. During halftime, you are not allowed to socialize with spectators including parents. You will sit on the track and watch the halftime show. 9. If you need to use the restroom, you need to do so before the game starts or during halftime escorted by a parent chaperone. 10. The use of cell phones at all games is prohibited. Ringers must be turned off and phones should be put away. If a phone is seen out on track, the cheerleader will not be permitted to cheer for that quarter. 11. JV and Freshman will take the poles form the breakthrough into the stadium and place the permanent one to the side on the track. The paper break-through goes on the track in the end zones. JV and Freshman cheerleaders are responsible for holding up the run-throughs. 12. All members need to help with the loading and unloading of the poles, break-throughs, and cheer bags. 13. JV and Varsity cheerleaders will stay on the track and stretch as a group out of the view of spectators. 14. Freshman will sit up in the stands in front of the pep squad or in an area designated by a spirit director during the game. You need to cheer the entire time and stay in formation. 15. The position of the JV team on the track is up to the discretion of the coach. 16. At no time is a cheerleader allowed to re-do their hair in front of spectators. You must double or triple band your hair so that it does not come down while tumbling. 17. You are required to ride the bus to and from events. Any exceptions must be cleared in writing at least 24 hours in advance. If approved, the coach or other spirit director must see the parent and the child together before they leave. 18. No talking or moving during National Anthem, the Moment of Silence, or school song. Cheerleader will not be permitted to cheer during first quarter if seen doing either. 19. Remember to always show enthusiasm while performing. You are a Cheer-leader, so look cheerful. Always smile and be spirited. 20. If you are not doing your job by yelling during cheers/chants or jumping and tumbling during or after cheers/chants you will sit out for 1 quarter. After 1 quarter you will be given another chance. If it happens a second time, you will sit out for the rest of the game, sit out the next game, and/or be issued appropriate demerits. 21. Cheerleaders will be graded on their performances at games. This is, in a sense, their homework assignment. They must apply everything they have learned about game etiquette or it will jeopardize their grade. 22. Cheerleaders must tumble out across the football field before the game. If a tuck (or other assigned tumbling pass by the coach) is not completed, then the cheerleader will not be able

to run out hand-in-hand with the football players. (If this process needs to be changed, it is at the discretion of the cheerleading coach to do so.) 23. On the day of a football game, cheerleaders are required to demonstrate the ability to complete the assigned standing tumbling skill. For a Varsity member, this is a standing tuck. For a JV member, this is a standing backhandspring. If these skills are not shown, than it will affect their position on the track. This decision is at the discretion of the coach. This will affect stunting. 24. Cheerleaders will throw a minimum of 5 jumps, 5 standing tumbling skills, 5 stunts during each quarter! More is better but this is the minimum. Failure to do so will reflect on your grade. 25. If your behavior does not meet the expectations of the cheerleading coach, you may be benched from performances/games. 26. Talking while in cheer line is not permitted. Must be at attention. 27. Cheerleaders/Mascots must attend any assigned spring sports event. If a cheerleader goes on probation for missing these events, he/she will still be required to attend these games while on probation. 28. Football Season: a. Varsity will cheer all varsity games and playoff games assigned. b. Junior Varsity will cheer at all assigned JV games, and will attend all Varsity football and Varsity playoff games. c. Freshmen will cheer at all assigned Freshman games, and will attend all Varsity football and varsity playoff games. 29. Freshmen, JV, and Varsity will provide their own transportation to and from all games when necessary. This does not include varsity football games, out of town games, and other games that we are able to get a bus. A. Pep Rallies 1. In order to be fiscally responsible, each pep rally will have a $50 spending limit per cheerleader. This $50/girl should include the retail value of donated goods to include props, costumes, decorations, etc. All receipts must be turned in on the assigned date. At that point, nothing may be added to the cost of the pep rally. 2. All costumes must abide by student dress code. This means that there will be no hats, bandanas, or other dress code non-approved items worn at pep rallies or throughout the day unless approved by the coach. 3. In order to participate in the team s performance in its entirety at the pep rally, every cheerleader must be able to demonstrate the skills required. For varsity, this skill is a standing tuck. For JV and Freshman, this skill is a standing backhandspring. This decision is at the discretion of the coach, and it does not include all other aspects of the pep rally. 4. All cheerleaders must arrive at their assigned time. If you are late, then you will receive demerits. If you are more than 10 minutes late, then you will receive demerits and be removed from the pep rally. 5. It is everyone s job to help lead the crowd in cheers and support all athletic teams. 6. Remember, this is a time to cheer, not socialize. 7. You will wear the assigned uniform. For morning Pep Rallies, the assigned uniform will be worn throughout the day with black leggings. Remember to always, Honor the Uniform 8. You may not wear any other cover up except your warm-up jacket or letterman jacket. No other person is allowed to wear or borrow your cheerleading jacket, sweatshirt, or other apparel. 9. Absolutely no jewelry, colored fingernail polish, or gum is allowed when you are in uniform. This rule is also in effect during the school day as well. 10. When Pep Rallies are in the morning, please lock your bags in your cheer locker or keep it in a safe kept place. 11. Parents are encouraged to come!

B. Singular Sensation 1. This district performance is held typically the last week in January and all cheerleaders will be required to attend and perform. 2. This is great practice for Nationals. C. Dance Celebration 1. All members are expected to participate in the end of the year performance. 2. This is a great time to showcase the cheerleader s talent one last time before the year ends. V. Summer Practices 1. Vacations will not be considered excused. For each absence incurred, you will miss one beginning of the year performance and/or subject to consequences as outlined in the NEISD Constitution. You must be present at practice in its entirety in order to maintain your performance status. 2. TUMBLING/STUNTING: All cheerleaders are required to attend 3 tumbling practices in the summer and 3 stunt practices in the summer. Each cheerleader will have a form to get signed for these practices. a. These practices may be at the scheduled time at Champions. b. These practices may be during the open Saturday gym at Champions c. These practices may include privates. However, please note that these are not included in your Champions cost. d. These practices may be at a different gym. However, please note that these are included in your total Champions cost. 3. Cheerleaders will not be allowed to miss camp to attend summer school. VI. Competition 1. Every member will participate in competition as a competing member or as an alternate. 2. There will be two competition squads during this school year The Black Squad will compete in the Varsity Division. The White Squad will compete in the Junior Varsity Division. 3. For the season, these teams will be determined by the coach with input from the other spirit directors and tumbling/stunting instructors. 4. Squads will be determined by August 7, Throughout all of the practices, I have been and will continue to keep watching/taking note of the following for each cheerleader: a. Stunting skills b. Tumbling c. Jumps d. Dancing ability e. Cheering ability f. Crowd appeal g. And overall attitude/motivation These are the attributes that I am looking at for the competitions teams. 5. The squad level a member is placed on for competition may differ from the squad level a member makes at school cheer tryouts. Placement on the teams is based on skills needed for each competition routine. Age or current squad placement is not taken into consideration. 6. Competition squads will be based on skill level and stunt positions needed. 7. Competition squad members are expected to maintain eligibility (academic, spirit, and code of conduct), a strong work ethic, good behavior and standing in the spirit organization, and meet all skill requirements. If at any time these requirements are not met, the coach may replace any member of the Black Squad with one from the White Squad or an alternate, or the coach may replace any member from the White Squad with an alternate.

8. If a member of a competition squad does not reach or maintain a certain skill level specified by the cheerleading coach, then they may be removed from the competition squad, as per skills agreement. 9. Extra practices may be called as needed (weekends, holidays, etc.) Absences from these practices may result in removal from the competition routine. 10. Some squad members may be chosen as alternates for the competition team(s). If a cheerleader becomes an alternate, he/she will be required to attend all practices. 11. The decision on whether or not to fill a position on a competition squad with a member from the other team or an alternate member will be based on the discretion of the cheer coach. 12. If it is deemed by the cheer coach that an alternate is needed to fill a position on a competition squad, the decision of who will fill that position will be made by the cheer coach. 13. Attendance at designated competitions is mandatory for every cheerleader. If an unexcused absence takes place at a competition, then the individual will be removed from the competition squad and removed from the team. 14. All members including alternates will be required to attend all practices and competitions. Alternates and members with injuries will be in competition uniform even if not competing. 15. At practices, alternates are not allowed to be on their phones, doing their hair/makeup, or talking. They must be paying attention to the routines, learning the counts, and spotting when necessary. 16. If a member is put on scholastic probation, spirit probation, or are dismissed they will become ineligible to compete, travel, or receive a refund. 17. If at any time during the year a member has been placed on scholastic probation, they may be ineligible to go to Nationals. This decision is at the discretion of the cheer coach. 18. Refunds for any competitions/trips that you are unable to attend (due to probation/dismissal) will be based on company policy. 19. Members will travel to and from competitions together as a group. 20. During Nationals, the only time parents will see their son/daughter is when we are waiting in the arena after we have performed. No family or friends are allowed in the hotel rooms at any time (NEISD policy). We are there for one purpose (competition) and not a family vacation. 21. At all competitions there are to be no phones out and no chargers out. If I see a phone out, demerits will be issued and there may be other consequences earned. 22. There will be a designated time at competitions to eat. This is when cheerleaders may get concession food. 23. Cheerleaders will be sitting as a unit at all competitions. Parents/friends can cheer from the parent section. 24. All cheerleaders will ask before they go to the bathroom, concession stand, or gift shop at the competition. You are never allowed to go alone. 25. If you are removed from the competition routine for disciplinary reasons, then you will be removed from the trip without a refund. 26. If you quit or are removed from the cheerleading organization, then you will be removed from the competition trip without a refund. 27. There will be no refunds for trips for any reason unless the district states that we can no longer take our trip due to world events. At that time, we will try to get as much money back as possible, but no full refund is guaranteed. VII. Banquet 1. All members and their parents (or two family guests) are invited to an end of the year banquet. 2. Only Varsity may bring a date to the banquet. 3. Members of the team need to be in good standing to attend the banquet. 4. The cost will vary.

V. Financial Obligations/Responsibilities 1. You will not perform/cheer until obligations are paid (per financial agreement). 2. If you do not pay the gym, you will not be able to practice. If you do not practice, you do not perform. 3. You will not be reimbursed for any amount of money if your son/daughter quits or is removed from the team. 4. Any money that you have in your individual account cannot be transferred to any other organization. 5. Any money that you have left in your individual account at the end of the year will remain in the individual s account. If you are a senior or do not return to the team, any remaining money will be put into the general account. 6. All cheerleaders must have a zero balance within spirit groups in order to be eligible for tryouts. All cheerleaders must have a zero balance within spirit groups in order to be eligible to walk the stage at graduation. 7. Balance must be paid before a game or performance. Cheerleader will sit out of games or performances until money is paid. VI. Fundraising 1. Turn money in on time. 2. You must pay for lost items. 3. A list of various individual and general fundraising events is attached. 4. It is recommended that each cheerleader participate in all fundraisers. They are designed to make the competition/uniform expenses less for the parents. It is possible to have the entire year paid for by fundraising if you really work hard. VIII. Grades 1. You must keep all grades over a 70 average. Failure to do so may result in academic probation for 9 weeks. If you are passing by the three-week progress report time, you will no longer be on probation. 2. If you receive an I you will be put on scholastic probation and you will have 1 week to make up that I or the grade will result in a 50. You will be removed from scholastic probation once your teacher has put in an official grade change through the registrar s office. 3. If you receive an NG you will also be placed on scholastic probation for 3 weeks 4. While on academic probation, you will be required to attend all practices, but you may not perform, attend events with the squad, compete, wear your uniform, etc. 5. Two academic probations may cause you to be removed from the squad. 6. If your average drops below a 75 on any grade report, you will be required to work on that subject during study halls. This will be monitored by coach and head cheerleaders. 7. Any member failing a class at any time during the 9 weeks may be asked to attend tutoring instead of the weekly scheduled pep rally (at the coach s discretion) 8. Grading policy for cheerleading class you will be required to be in the cheerleading class period. Your average will be based on the following breakdown. a. Participation/attitude: 50% (this includes dressing out properly) b. Written activities: 25% (posters, writing and motivational assignments) c. Skills/Performances: 25% (cheers, technique tests, etc.)

IX. All Star Squads 1. The Churchill Cheerleading Squad must take precedence over all other cheerleading squads.
