The Team and Community Novice/Varsity Crews -Novice for one year from the beginning of the first season of completion - Varsity after first year of competition. Some boats/races are Junior category; however, all non-novice athletes are on the Varsity crew. (Varsity does not mean he or she has earned a letter. It also does not mean he or she will earn a letter in the current season.) Coaches, Coxswains, Rowers - Each member of the team performs specific purposes - Teamwork - each part doing their part for the whole Parents and Board - Support the efforts of the coaching staff and athletes at practice and in competition.
NRC Goals and Focus -Community-Building a team where student athletes and their families can feel welcome. The team will represent the Northville community throughout the state and region. -Commitment-Making rowing and the team a priority. -Competition-Creating healthy competition among the team and putting the most competitive team on the water we can.
By the Numbers and Tryouts All athletes will tryout. If cuts are necessary athletes will be notified before tryouts start. Must Have Before Tryouts: 1. Paid Dues 2. Registration by August Swim Test on File 4. Physical on Fill with NHS 5. Current Emergency Card -Safety- 1:18 ratio 80 Athlete Cap Varsity Men 20 Varsity Women 20 Novice Men 20 Novice Women 20 **All 18 rowers and 2 coxswains** Tryouts vs Cuts Our goal is to keep as many athletes as we can accomodate safely on the water. Our ability to keep athletes is determined by practice schedule as well as coaching availability. Tryouts=Assessment of ALL athletes. This will occur at the beginning or before every season. Cuts=We have too many athletes for any of our teams and we are going to exceed the cap for an individual team or our total. Some athletes may not be able to participate during the season. Tryout information will help determine who makes the team. If cuts are necessary athletes will be notified before the tryout period begins.
Competition -Coaches will set up boats and lineups for athletes to compete for spots in the top boats. Each group may have different top boats. -2 Year Goal-Build the depth of the program to focus on 8s. -Due to race limitations and practice performance not all athletes will race at every regatta or scrimmage.
Athlete Expectations - Attendance - To succeed, rowers/coxswains must attend practices - If the rower cannot attend they are expected to contact the coaches before practice, the earlier the better. - Appropriate Clothing - Trou / Spandex / Athletic Clothing - No loose pants, basketball shorts or sweatpants on the water - Too many layers > too few - Socks, hats, jackets - Additional clothing for after practice - Dry clothes to change into - Nature of the Sport / Weather - This is a water sport, bring extra clothes because you will get wet. - Cancellation of practice only occurs in extreme wind and thunderstorms, so be prepared for anything!
