16 How Coaches Assign Athletes We boat as many rowers as possible Usually 85% or more of eligible athletes in any regatta We aim to have each athlete in at least one regatta Why your athlete may not be in a regatta Category is excluded (e.g., some regattas are Varsity only) We can t fill all the seats on a boat or we have a no-show Boat may not be adequately prepared in eyes of the coaches Coaches decide who rows Ability to move the boat Showing up for practice and working hard Contribution to a positive team spirit 15

19 Fundraising Langley Athletic Boosters Gave us $6,500! Tag Day Canvassing Saturday, February 3 rd Athletes go door to door to solicit donations Fundraising Goal: $10,000 Families 2016/2017 had over $43,000 donated by crew families Continued family support helps us support our athletes, coaches, and equipment needs 18

22 Spring Training Almost Here Target start is Feb 20 at Occoquan Reservoir Weekdays Bus loads at 3:15pm and departs LHS by 3:30pm Practice starts when bus arrives, about 4:15pm Practice ends at 7:00pm (or sunset, if earlier) Note: no practice for Novices on Wednesdays Saturdays 8:00-11:00 (men) and 9:00-12:00 (women) No buses parent carpools are required 21

23 Travel to Occoquan Monday / Tuesday / Thursday / Friday One bus returns to LHS (about 7:40pm) One bus returns to Forestville Elementary (about 7:50pm) Wednesday No novice practice Only one bus to LHS Saturday: parent carpools Interactive Map of Families on Website ( We can t send a bus without a certified chaperone FCPS requires a certified parent chaperone on each bus If a volunteer doesn t show, an entire bus is cancelled and $600 wasted 22

24 Weather can be an issue Stay Connected If we can t get to the Quan, practice may shift to LHS instead We try to call any cancellation by 4pm the day before but no guarantees Parents MUST meet the bus when it arrives back We notify parents when buses leave the Occoquan Athletes are asked to text parents when 20 minutes out Repeated failure to meet the bus on arrival means you lose bus privileges Sign up for the free RainedOut app 23

25 Be prepared What You Need to Know Bring water park fountains are not turned on until later in March! Have snacks for bus ride down and back Lots of warm layers if it is above 35 we practice! Proper nutrition is vital you burn calories staying warm Be there don t let your boat down We practice not as individuals but as boats A single-no-show could keep 8 others from practicing You must inform the coach the day before if you will miss practice 24

All supplies will be parent provided through Sign Up Genius We will need parent volunteers to set up and take down the tent Looking for a Langley team tent coordinator! Buses Chaperone certification from last year is still valid We will set up a date/time for new chaperones Buses will continue right up to Stotesbury Team Dinners 29

31 Regatta Season Approaches Fun, boisterous all-day event races in categories A race every 4-5 minute Up to six boats in each heat or race 1500 meters in 5-8 minutes Inches can separate boats at finish Finish line in front of grandstand Awards for top three finishers in each category Staffed by volunteers from participating schools 30

32 Regatta Logistics No team buses on regatta days Parking Limited parking for a fee ($20 even for volunteers) at Sandy Run (fills early) Free parking at Silver Brook Elementary School with free shuttles to park Remote lot parking (further away, lower fee $5) Allow 45 minutes to get from parking to the grandstand Grandstand is 15 minute walk from where parking shuttle bus drops off Van to grandstand available if needed - $2 fee each way LCBC provides food, snacks and drinks to our athletes through family volunteers on regatta days through Sign Up Genius Full concessions available (sponsored by VASRA) 31

34 Langley Crew Policy There are many criteria that the coaches use to determine lineups for each regatta. The coaches will attempt to use objective criteria such as erg scores, seat racing, and racing experience as much as possible, but they will also use other criteria such as attitude, attendance, technique and boat moving ability. The coaches' decision regarding lineups is final. ATHLETES: If you do not know why you are not in a boat, athletes should ask the coach. PARENTS: If you have a question, please ask a Board member, we will relay questions and concerns to coaches. 33
