1 The Big Idea Time of Your Life This week you re going to explore time in different increments, from lining up in birthday order, to being a clock, and racing against the clock in silly stunts! Supplies Bedtime Math provides: Stopwatches: 2 Rubber bands: 3 per 4 kids Clock Numbers: 2 sets To print: 1 Ridiculous Challenges (at end of the directions) Room Set-up: You provide: Roll of masking tape Pens or pencils: 1 per kid Paper: 1 sheet per kid, plus 4 extra Bag or hat to draw from Large writing surface e.g. blackboard, or piece of paper Clear an open floor space, about 10 x 25 feet, to lay out 2 clock faces. Optional: If space allows or if you don t have a volunteer helper, set up the Clock Numbers ahead of time as described below in All Hands on Deck. Clubs with less space may carve out 10 x 10 feet and play on just 1 clock. Cover up any clocks in the room, or have kids put their backs to it! Other Key Prep: Make Hour Hand and Minute Hand labels. If you re playing with 2 clock faces, make 2 of each. Also print and cut out the Ridiculous Challenges (at end of these directions), and put the slips in the bag/hat. What s the Math? 2 Kickoff Intro to the kids: How do we measure time? What do we call the big chunks? (Take guesses: year, decade (10 years), century (100 years), millennium (1,000 years).) What do we call the tiny chunks? (Discuss hours, minutes, seconds.) Let s see how well we can guess the time! Birthday Sort (10-15 minutes) Intro to the kids: Months are about 4 weeks long and divide the year. What s the order of months? (Review as a group.) Using that, let s find out the order of our birthdays! Not our ages, just our order by month and day. 1. Divide the group into 2 teams. 2. Indicate where each team should line up, and which end should be January to start the year. 3. Have everyone write his/her birthday on a piece of paper to help. 4. When you say Go!, each team figures out their birthday dates and hustles to stand in the right order. 5. When everyone is lined up, each team goes down the line and says their birthdays starting with January. See who did it right! 6. Teach the kids the Knuckle Rule: Make 2 fists and press them together, backs facing you. Name the months starting with January on the left. All knuckles are the 31-day months, and the dips in between have 30 days (or 28 for February)! 2

3 All Hands on Deck (20-25 minutes) Intro to the kids: Now we know how calendars work, but how does a plain old clock tell the time? (Review briefly how the short and long hands of a clock work.) Today you re going to be the hands of a clock and race to show the time! 1. Tape the Clock Number printouts to the floor in a 10-foot circle like a giant clock. Lay out a second identical clock next to it. Clubs without enough space for 2 clocks may make 1 clock, and race against a stopwatch. 2. Mark the center of each clock with a masking tape X. 3. Clubs with 2 clocks divide into 2 teams. Each team lines up behind a clock. 4. The first 2 contestants from each team decide who will be the hour hand and the minute hand. Give them the Hour Hand or Minute Hand label as a reminder. 5. Now the race begins! Call out a whole-hour time: 6 o clock! NOTE: 1-clock clubs can start the stopwatch now and stop when the kids are positioned correctly. 6. The 2 contestants from each team lie down inside their clock as the hands, each pointing to the right number. The minute-hand people extend their arms to be longer than the hour hands. 7. The first team to position themselves correctly scores a point! Record on a blackboard or sheet of paper. 8. Repeat with the next pair of contestants from each team. Assign their roles right before they start, otherwise they might forget. 9. Let the spectators call out times for the contestants to make. 10. Times to avoid for overcrowding: 12:00, 5:30, 6:30. 3

4 11. When everyone has gone at least once, see who won! Bonus (optional): See if kids want to do quarter-hours like 4:15! Time Flies When (20-25 minutes) Intro to the kids: When you're doing something fun and you find out it's time to stop, does it feel too soon or too late? How about when you're doing something you don t like, like waiting in line? (Discuss examples as a group.) Let s measure how long 20 seconds feels when we want time to hurry up or slow down. 1. Divide the kids into teams of 4, and grab your stopwatches. 2. Choose one team as the Contestants and let them draw one Ridiculous Challenge from the bag (see Other Key Prep, page 1). 3. Choose another team as the Time Testers. They will try to guess when 20 seconds have passed. Teach them the 1 alligator, 2 alligator rule for estimating seconds. 4. The rest of the kids get to be Spectators and watch the silly stunts. 5. Have the Time Testers close their eyes. Then say Go!, and start both stopwatches, putting 1 on the floor in front of the Time Testers and holding 1 for the Contestants. 6. The Contestants start doing the Ridiculous Challenge while counting up in their heads, and the Time Testers begin counting silently. 7. When each Time Tester thinks 20 seconds have passed, they open their eyes and check their team s stopwatch to see how close they were. The Yoga Stork Challenge 4

5 8. When the Contestants think 20 seconds have passed, they stop doing the challenge and check the stopwatch you re holding to see how much time actually passed. NOTE: Encourage all kids to count on their own and not be swayed by others stopping their counting! 9. Repeat with new teams at each position. Make sure all the kids have a chance to be a Contestant, Time Tester, and Spectator. Ask the kids: Did time pass slowly or quickly when you were a Contestant? What about when you were a Time Tester? Why? Were the guesses under or over, or both? Did you get better at doing the math and guessing over time? And now, The List of Ridiculous Challenges (cutouts on next page): Speed Jumping Jacks: The kids try to do 30 jumping jacks in 20 seconds! Crab Walk: The kids walk around sideways like a crab whatever that looks like! Yoga Stork: Contestants stand on 1 foot while crossing their other foot to rest on their standing-leg knee. The Contestants hold that other foot in their hand, and stick their free hand straight up in the air. Stay balanced for 10 seconds! Wheelbarrow Race: Pair off the Contestants (grab one from another team as a barrow-pusher if needed) and set a distance as a goal anything over 12 feet is challenging enough! Ring Toss: Stand a marker, pen or pencil up on a desk using masking tape. Toss 3 rubber bands from an arm s length away, and try to land them on the pencil within the time limit! Shoe Flip: Contestants pair off, and each contestant lets one shoe hang loosely from their toes (ideally their dominant foot). The Contestants face each other 3 feet apart and one flips the 5

6 shoe off his/her foot to the other, who tries to catch it in his/her hands. Repeat with the other contestant in the pair. See how many catches they can do in the time limit! And if you re on a roll, make up your own stunts! A Touch of Class To the kids: Time flies when you re having fun and doing math! And it wasn t too different from questions in your math book, like these: Rover and Fluffy were born in the same year Rover on August 11 th and Fluffy on August 9 th. How many days older is Fluffy? (Answer: 2 days, because 11-9=2.) If you re meeting your friend at the ice cream shop at 6 pm, and it will take 1 hour to walk there, by when should you leave your house to be on time? (Answer: At 5:00 pm.) If you thought you held a Yoga Stork Pose for 20 seconds, but you actually held it for only 15, by how many seconds were you off? (Answer: 5 seconds, because 20-15=5.) 6
