1 Thank you for your interest in Washington State University and the Spirit Squad! The WSU cheerleaders and dancers perform at all home football games, men s and women s basketball games, and volleyball matches. In addition to these games, the cheerleaders and dancers are required to be at many functions, ranging from pep rallies to alumni gathering or charity events. Members of the WSU spirit squad are excellent ambassadors of Washington State University and the Department of Athletics. WSU cheerleaders and dancers travel to many away football games within the Pac-10 and additional games across the country. Next year we are looking forward to traveling to the San Antonio, Texas, to play Notre Dame. We will also cheer for our basketball teams at the PAC-10 tournaments in Los Angeles. WSU has one co-ed cheerleading squad and one all-female competitive dance team, the Crimson Girls. The cheer squad will have approximately 12 males and 12 females, and the dance team will have female dancers. Dance tryouts will be Saturday, April 17 th, and cheer tryouts will be Saturday, April 24 th. Incoming freshman or incoming transfer students who have been admitted to WSU, as well as current WSU students in good standing, will be eligible to try out. Members of both teams should be prepared for the possibility of going to camp at the end of summer, and must be back in Pullman one full week before classes start for the beginning of practices. During the Fall and Spring Semesters, practices are held three times per week. In addition to practice, all squad members are required to participate in a weight training program. Participation in the WSU Spirit Squad is not to be considered lightly, as it is a very time-consuming activity. For example, during the month of November, we have football, volleyball, men s and women s basketball active at the same time. The Spirit Squad is financially supported by the Athletic Department, but there is some fundraising responsibility for each squad member. Spirit Squad members receive a stipend for being on the team, which increases every year you continue with the program. Cheering and dancing at WSU has many rewards. It is an opportunity to be a part of Cougar Spirit and many athletic events. It is an opportunity to meet people of all ages and to work as a team. Spirit Squad members are sometimes asked to perform during Christmas and Spring Breaks, so you must be prepared for this possibility. Attached you will find more general information regarding the 2010/2011 WSU Crimson Girls tryouts. Please feel free to look over this packet and contact me if you have any further questions. Please call or me at iwang@wsu.edu or GO COUGS! WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT TRYOUTS! Ivy Wang, Spirit Program Coordinator, WSU Athletics 1

6 Washington State University Spirit Squad Regulations It is your responsibility to read and understand all information below. Once you have read the material and have clarified any questions you might have concerning the information, please sign the document. WSU Spirit Squad s Purpose: The Spirit Squad s purpose is to provide an atmosphere of energy and enthusiasm at games and appearances. The Spirit Squad involves athletically talented individuals who wish to become involved in the spirit of collegiate life. Commitment and Responsibility: Your academic success is the first priority of the Athletic Department, Spirit Program being second. Your commitment to the WSU Spirit Program cannot be emphasized enough but please consider the time commitment and compromises you will be asked to make throughout the entire year. This includes the possibility of giving up winter and spring break for games and appearances. Spirit Squad Policies: All participants must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA. If you are not meeting the academic requirements, you will not be allowed to participate in performances. You must, however, attend all practices and performances and produce a weekly progress report to the Coach until the end of the academic year or grades improve. You must take and maintain a minimum of 12 credits each semester. A look of unity is very important for the overall effect of our program. You will be asked to maintain a specific appearance. Any major changes in personal appearance during the season must be requested. Squad members must maintain a well-groomed appearance: clean uniform, clean-shaven, body markings covered, etc. Members recognize that at all times they must conduct themselves in a way which represents the Athletic Department and the University in a positive manner. No team member, including persons 21 years of age or older, is permitted to consume, purchase, or possess alcohol, illegal drugs, or tobacco, for any reason while they are representing WSU, which includes all travel. Consumption of alcohol, any controlled substance, or tobacco while in WSU attire is forbidden. Members must remember that Facebook and other online social networking sites are not private, and will not post photos or other material that may paint them or the WSU Spirit Squad in an unprofessional light. Spirit Squad coaches will monitor social sites and punishments will be at the discretion of the coaches. Members are not permitted to drink alcohol within 24 hours prior to an event or practice. Illegal drugs are prohibited at all times. Overall fitness and conditioning will be monitored throughout the year by our strength department and medical team. Normal protocol will be followed for 6

7 injury or illness. Once the appointment is complete, the team physician will direct the plan for any further testing, workouts, or activity. Each member is responsible for the upkeep of issued equipment and uniforms. Members will be charged the replacement cost of each piece that is missing, damaged, or turned in late. There may be some financial responsibility for squad members. Money must be turned in by the requested time or your student account will be charged. If a member is injured, they will be ineligible to participate in all games, performances, and practices until they are cleared by WSU Athletic Medicine. If a member becomes ill or injured before a practice or performance, it is their responsibility to call the Coach, find a substitute and report illness or injury to the athletic trainer. If a member is dismissed from the program or leaves the program early by their own choosing, the student must return all issued equipment or reimburse the University for lost, broken, or unreturned equipment. If any item is not returned by the date specified by the Coach or equipment room in proper condition, your student account will be charged.
