EXPECT NO MERCY BACK TO SCHOOL By Zavier Alvarez
2. DESERT ROAD-NIGHT A lone Humvee flies down a dusty road. It heads for the distant lights of Baghdad. Johnny Cash s Burning Ring of Fire blares from inside. INT. HUMVEE-NIGHT West is behind the wheel, he has one hand on the wheel and the other hand is occupied by a Budweiser. Next to him sits BRUNO, a large man, he also nurses a cold one. They are both obviously smashed, they attempt to sing along, but the words come out slurred. West turns to Mack. BOTH I fell in to a burn- burning ring of fire. Take it Mack! I went down, down, down. And the flames went higher! BOTH And it burned, burned, burned! The ring of fire, the ring of fire. They burst into laughter. West doesn t seem to notice the smoke beginning to billow from underneath the hood. The Humvee begins to shudder and slow. Oh no! You have to be fucking me. The Humvee dies and rolls to a complete stop. West turns to Mack.
3. Do you know anything about fixing cars? Nope. Shit. We re screwed. West grabs his M-16 and jumps out of the Humvee, he slowly walks over to the hood. Mack climbs up into the back and climbs up into the.50 turret. He pulls back the hammer and begins to scan the area. I suggest you hurry, this is the area Patterson s unit was hit last week. We got a bigger problem. What s that? If we re not back soon, their gonna leave without us. West lifts the hood open. A huge cloud of smoke flows out. Shit! Why don t we call this in? (sarcastically) Yeah, that's a great idea! And we can share all this booze we re carrying, with them. Good point. West examines the engine. I think it needs water. Throw me your canteen.
4. It s empty. Oh, well hand one of the beers. You can t put beer in there. Watch me. West grabs a Budweiser and dumps it in the radiator. The smoke subsides. Alright, lets rol- The bush behind West suddenly shakes with movement. West snatches up his M-16, Mack swings the.50 Caliber towards the bush. Nothing. Come out, now, or we will shoot. Come out now! They prepare to fire, when suddenly a goat walks out of the bushes. Damn it, its just a goat. Mack can t stop laughing. Shut up, lets get outta here. EXT. ROAD/ MOSUL-DAY A small convoy barrels down a deserted road. The road ripples due to the intense heat. Each truck carries several Marines, each one fully geared and ready for combat.
5. INT. TRANSPORT TRUCK-DAY We push in towards the last truck. Everyone is quiet, staring straight ahead. West sits next to the back hatch staring at the horizon behind them. (V.O.) After the mortar attack, I was transferred to Fox Company. A solid group, but there is one weak link. Captain Powell. CAPTAIN sits towards the front of the truck, he pours over maps, and he looks completely confused. He glances at a compass. (to himself) Where...where the hell are we? Powell looks up from his maps and squints; he grabs a pair of thick, black, Army issue glasses from his vest pocket. (V.O.) But it s not all bad, take for instance Mack. Mack is a monster of a man, he cleans blood off a very large hunting knife. West glances over at Mack and chuckles. Hey, Mack? What? Where did you find fake blood? Shut up, this shit is real. Human? (beat) Mine. I missed the holster and stabbed myself. Jackass.
6. West glances back towards the front of the transport. (V.O.) And then there is Tory. SHAWN, the ideal Marine. He is young, fit, and most of all intense. In a single hand; he is cutting the a pack of playing cards skillfully and flawlessly. Suddenly the truck is jolted to a sudden stop. Powell's glasses fly off his face; they scatter across the bed of the truck. Damn it! EXT. ROAD-DAY The convoy has come to a complete stop. The lead Humvee suddenly performs a U-Turn and heads to the end of the convoy. It stops next to Fox Company's truck. Major Shepard and his assistant walk to the back of Fox Company's transport. INT. TRANSPORT TRUCK-DAY Everyone looks up and their backs stiffen at the sight of the Major. SHEPARD Captain Powell? Powell stumbles forward. Yes? Yes, Sir. SHEPARD The village up ahead was recently mortared by local Insurgents. The villagers have turned the local school into a makeshift hospital and they're requesting military assistant. Yes, sir. SHEPARD Do you think Fox can handle it?
7. Absolutely, sir. SHEPARD Good, move out. EXT. VILLAGE/SCHOOL-DAY We see a very dilapidated building. We push out to reveal a typical Iraqi Village, it is dominated by clay huts and the occasional brick building. Fox Company s transport slides to a stop in front of the school. A cloud of dust rises up from the ground. INT. TRANSPORT TRUCK-DAY West and another Marine, Tory release the hatch and jump out. They sweep the area with their M-16 s as the rest of Fox Company unload. Shit. West, you see what I m seeing? Yeah. Captain Powell leaps from the truck, and stumbles to the ground. Captain Powell? What is it, West? We have a problem. What? What is it. The village is deserted. So? West gives out a loud sigh. Other Marines shake their heads with disapproval.
8. This is obviously a trap. Bullshit, everyone is in the school. Now get ready to move out. I don t think that's a good idea, sir. I agreed with West, sir. I think we should leave. I don t care what you think! We have a mission and we re going to complete it. Yes, sir. Good, now move out. Everyone into the hospital. Shouldn t we leave a squad outside to cover our advance? A look of confusion washes over Powell. (unsure) Uh...no, we all go in. INT. SCHOOL-DAY- The school is a simple building, just one room. Its dominated my a number of small tables. The only entrance are two large doors. Several small glass windows line the walls. The doors suddenly open and Fox Company floods in, lead by West and Tory. Powell is last in, he surveys the building. Where are they? The school is completely deserted.
9. Turner? Get over here. A young Marine hurries over to Powell, he carries the field radio on his back. Yes, sir? TURNER Get SO-COM on the line and ask where the villagers are. Yes, sir. TURNER Turner pulls out the radio headset and starts to adjust the dials. West walks over. Sir, the villagers were never here. Shut it, West. Turner? Suddenly a bullet shatters a back window and flies through the radio s headset and through Turner s head. (screaming) Shit! Everyone down. Everyone drops to the ground as a hail of bullets obliterates the windows. THUMP-THUMP-THUMP. The distinct sound of Mortars can be heard in the distance. Several explosions rock the building. West crawls over to Turner and picks up what is left of the headset. The headset is covered in blood and brain matter. Shit. West glances back and spots Powell cowering in the corner. (screaming) Sir! No answer, Powell continues to huddle in the corner. Suddenly a stray bullet catches a young Marine in the throat.
10. Medic! West reaches for Powell and grabs him by the shoulder. Powell spins around. Terror wrapped on his face. Sir? What are we going to do? Powell just stares. West begins to shake Powell violently. Sir! What are your orders? Powell seems to snap out of it. Get on the radio and call for air support. The radio is destroyed! Livingston crawls over. Sir! We can t stay here! Sir? (to himself) I don t know. I don t know what to do. EXT. SUBURBAN STREET-DAY Jay Sanders stands in front of his home. He is no longer the young, fit, archetype fighter pilot. He has been broken. Fresh cuts still cover his face and the swollen black eyes still linger. He is accompanied by a pair of crutches and he wears a Marine dress uniform. SANDERS (whispers) Home. Finally home. He makes his way to the front door and slowly knocks. A few moments pass and then Rachel Cruz opens the door.
11. RACHEL Oh my god. SANDERS I m home baby. Rachel leaps at him and wraps her arms around him. He cringes with pain. RACHEL Oh god, I m sorry baby. SANDERS It s all right. INT. LIVING ROOM-DAY Sanders sits a recliner. He looks around taking the place in. He notices a picture sitting on the table in front of him. He picks it up. Then he reaches inside his pocket and takes out the picture it s now badly burnt and warped. The pictures are the same. RACHEL (O.S.) Some one wants to see you. Rachel walks in holding their son, KEVIN SANDERS. RACHEL Watch this. Rachel sets Kevin down, and he manages to stand on his own. Suddenly he begins walking towards Sanders. SANDERS (shocked) He can walk? RACHEL Yeah, two weeks now. SANDERS And I missed it. Sanders is crushed. Tears begin to form. RACHEL It s not your fault, baby. SANDERS I should have been here.
12. Kevin reaches his father, who picks him up. Kevin holds up a little toy Football. SANDERS I can t even play ball with my son. RACHEL Its going to take awhile, but you will, eventually. EXT. SCHOOL/ FIELD-DAY Three Insurgents burst over a small ridge behind the school. They stop in the middle of a small field, two begin to assemble a mortar launcher while the other unwraps a large piece of cloth which holds several mortars. INT. SCHOOL-DAY West, Tory and Mack huddle together as the hell outside continues. We have to get a radio. There is always the one in the truck. How the fuck do you suppose we get to it? Its the only way, we can t stay here, or we re fucked. We ll who do we send? Livingston? I heard that fucker is fast. Alright. West turns to the rest of his fellow Marines.
13. Livingston, come here a minute. A young Marine crawls toward West. LIVINGSTON Yeah, what s the plan? We have to get a radio, and the only one is in the transport. LIVINGSTON Oh. Let me guess, you want me to go get it. Your the fastest. Livingston nods in agreement. I ll have the boys lay down covering fire. EXT. SCHOOL/ FIELD-DAY (S.M.) We see a Mortar being dropped down into the tube. THUMP. The projectile flies out of the tub and we follow it through the air. It arks down towards the school. INT. SCHOOL-DAY (S.M.) The double doors slowly open and Livingston readies himself. All the Marines rise and take their places next to the window. GO! (screaming) The Marines open fire, the sound is deafening. Livingston hurls himself out the doors.
14. EXT. SCHOOL-DAY (S.M.) The mortar continues downwards, directly toward Livingston on the ground. He is only a yard from the transport when it hits. The resulting explosion blinds the camera with dust and dirt. INT. SCHOOL-DAY Everyone is shooting, simply chaos. West notices Livingston and turns toward the door. Mack snatches him back. No, we ll lose you too. (screaming) We can t just leave him! We ll get him later. Now fire your weapon! West goes back toward his window and continues firing. EXT. SCHOOL-DAY Livingston lies in a puddle of his own blood. He reaches for a leg that is no longer there. INT. SANDERS HOME-NIGHT Sanders sits in front of the television. On the television a younger Kevin sits in a high chair. A birthday cake with one candle sits in front of him. Sanders is about to lose it. Suddenly the phone begins to ring. Instinct forces him up, but the pain brings him back down. SANDERS Ah, damn it. The phone continues to ring. SANDERS Rachel? Rachel, the phone is ringing.
15. No answer. He glances across the room at his crutches. Damn. SANDERS The phone continues to ring. He suddenly musters all his strength and stands. He cringes with pain. One step. Two steps. Three steps. Suddenly he falters and collapses. He screams in pain. SANDERS (screaming) Rachel! INT. SCHOOL-NIGHT The guns have fallen silent. The floor of the school is now covered in spent cartridges. West, Tory and Mack once again huddle together. (whispering) So what s the plan. (whispering) Nothing has changed, we still need that fucking radio. (whispering) Well, now is the time. (whispering) Agreed, we have the advantage now. (whispering) Advantage? West pulls a pair of night-vision goggles out of his side-bag and attaches them to his helmet. (whispering) Advantage.
16. (whispering) Oh. (whispering) Cover me. EXT. SCHOOL-NIGHT West slowly pushes the doors open and slips out into the night. Each step gives out a slight crunch and kicks up dust. West steps over Livingston s body and continues to the transport. INT. TRANSPORT TRUCK-NIGHT The door slowly opens and West crawls inside. He snatches the radio up and flicks the on switch. The radio comes to life with the sound of static. He adjust the dials. (whispering) This is Fox Company,1st Armored Division. We need immediate air support and med-evac at the following coordinates. INT. SCHOOL-NIGHT Mack and Tory look on in amazement. Behind them Powell begins to get up. He slowly walks over towards. What the hell is going on? Mack spins around and throws his hand over Powell s mouth. (whispering) Keep it down! Powell begins to struggle. (to Tory) Help me hold him down!
17. EXT. SCHOOL-NIGHT West slips out of the transport and into the night. West reaches Livingston's body and checks for a pulse. Suddenly the motionless body surges towards West. LIVINGSTON (gasping) Help...me, please help me. Livingston reaches for West who is scared shitless. Holy fuck! They have made too much noise, the Insurgents open fire. West leaps under the transport. Livingston is torn to shreds. INT. ZAHRAH S HOUSE/ LIVING ROOM-NIGHT We see a dark livingroom filled with deep shadows. In the far corner a large man sits in a chair. Suddenly the front door opens, light floods in. The man is reveal to be OMAR HUSSEIN. Zahrah walks in and is startled by the man. Father? ZAHRAH OMAR Explain this. He tosses her a T-Shirt, she examines it. The shirt has MARINES written across it. ZAHRAH He is just a frien- He jumps out of the chair and rams her against the wall. He wraps his massive hands around her throat. OMAR You lying whore! ZAHRAH I swear it! OMAR If I ever catch you with him here, I will kill you.
18. EXT. UNDER TROOP TRANSPORT-NIGHT West continues to take cover under the troop transport. Bullets continue zing passed him. He rolls over towards the school and spots Mack and Tory struggling with Powell. Shit. INT. SCHOOL-NIGHT Mack and Tory wrestle around with Powell as the other Marines look on. Hold him! Tory grabs Powell by the shoulders, Mack pulls back his massive left arm and lets it smash into Powell s face knocking him out. Shit. We just knocked out a fucking captain. We ll take care of him later. You two tie him up. Two young Marines grab Powell and begin restraining him. Mack and Turner both turn their attention to West who is still pinned under the transport. What do we do now? Tory glances at a Stinger Missile Launcher strapped around Private ZACK COLLINS back. Collins come here. Yeah. COLLINS Let me see that Stinger. What are you doing?
19. I m gonna clear the way for West. COLLINS You can t use that indoors! Watch me. Tory walks over to the main window. He places the launcher on his shoulder. All the Marines rush across the room, they put on their goggles. Clear! The missile ignites, accelerating off screen, leaving them all in exhaust smoke. EXT. UNDER TROOP TRANSPORT-NIGHT West spots the missile fly out of the school and leaps to his feet. He makes a mad dash to the school. POV: STINGER NOSE CAM The missile flies right into the middle of a large group of Insurgents. KABOOM. The fire ball illuminates the night sky for a brief moment. INT. SCHOOL-DAWN West leaps through the doors and rolls into the smoky building. Mack helps his friend up. So, what s going on with backup? Five minutes, tops. We might not have that long. Mack and West spin around.
20. What? COLLINS Take a look. Collins detaches his night vision goggles and hands them to West. POV: NIGHT VISION GOGGLES Two pickup trucks, loaded with Insurgents pull up across the field. Their going to storm the building. INT. SANDERS HOME-NIGHT Sanders sits next to a large window in his livingroom. He stares at the sky. A jet soars through the clouds. Next to him sits a bottle of Jack Daniels, he doesn t even pour a glass, just takes a swig. INT. SCHOOL-DAWN Well, shit. Let them come. Mack pulls out his bayonet and attaches it to his M-16, Everyone else follows suit. Everyone take a window. The Marines line up against the wall and take aim. Suddenly in the distance the slightest sound can be heard. As it gets closer, it becomes the distinct sound of helicopters. EXT. SCHOOL-DAWN Three Apaches fly over the school and unload their Vulcan mini-guns on the large group of Insurgents. They are torn to shreds.
21. INT. SCHOOL-DAY Hell yeah. We still have one problem. What? Him. Mack points towards a unconscious Powell. Wake him up. Mack and Tory pick him up, he begins to come to. Powell opens his eyes to see West standing in front of him. You all are in deep shit. We ll let Major Shepard decide that. EXT. SCHOOL-DAY A massive Chinook Helicopter lands outside the school. The marines slowly exit the school. Lets get the fuck outta here. Fox Company heads towards the helicopter, no one seems to notice the small triggers sticking out of the ground. C.U. ON A BOOT As it slowly steps down on a small trigger. The ground under neath Fox company erupts with a massive explosion. The force sends Marines flying into the air. THE END
