1 Volume XLIX Issue 1 For the Record October 15, 2018 From the Desk of the President Hi All, It s that time of year when classes are starting. I hope all of you have sat down and reviewed all the Basic and Mainstream definitions. It never hurts to review what you already know. I know every time I review the definitions, I realize how much I take for granted. A review brings me back in focus. I m sure it will work for you as well. With this in mind, my remarks about reviewing the definitions bring to mind how much we need to reinforce this knowledge to all of our dancers. I would encourage all the club members to angel the class. Even they may realize they were a little fuzzy on some moves. As the old saying goes A little review never hurt anyone. Now in regard to the new students: I find that student dancers do not get enough repetition on the moves they are learning. I would strongly recommend we spend a little more time with each move and raise the bar on each move you teach. I have included some basic drills you may wish to use and encourage all of you to send some of your drills to share. Remember: we are in this together to rebuild square dancing to the glory days of the 70 s and 80 s! A dancer called me and suggested that when callers teach a class they provide a list of the moves so the dancers can follow along and mark off the moves as they are taught. I also received a call from a dancer concerned about a caller using singing calls with suggestive lyrics. If this is happening, keep in mind this is not acceptable by Callerlab, ACA or TSCA code of ethics. Please be aware of the age group you have at your dances and/or classes. Teens or younger dancers should not be subjected to adult phrases. It would be to your benefit to use better judgement when calling a dance. Enough said. John Carlton

2 2 From the Desk of the Vice President Thank you to the TSCA members for attending the seminar in October. It was one of the most attended seminars in years. Thanks to Joe Kromer from Tannheim, Germany, for a very educational presentation. TSCA members ROCK! The last writing, I focused on the time, really the lack of time we provide for new dancers to dance at a club dance. Today I am analyzing another step into the dance time. I recently attended a local club dance in the DFW area. Because I am unable to dance currently I took the time to truly evaluate (in between some great conversations) the pattern of the dance programs and the participation. Here is what transpired: Early rounds, one plus tip, 5 mainstream tips with 2 rounds between. So this night approximately, 90% of the crowd participated in the mainstream square dancing continually at a time (9+ squares). Then 7 squares participated in the plus tip. Now let s look at participation during round dancing. After the mainstream tips there were anywhere from couples depending on the song. After the square dance plus tip there were 5 couples dancing. Let that sink in, 5 couples. For approximately 8-10 minutes no one else could or would dance. Approximately 10% of the dancers were participating. Why would anyone only want 10% of the dancers on the floor? The cuer shouldn t, the club shouldn t, so why can you find this routinely across the DFW area? Is this happening in your area? Why is there not a stipulation in contracts to eliminate this issue. As was previously published, we have limited new and mainstream dancers to approximately 40 minutes of dancing at a club dance. If you happen to dance mainstream and plus you can have an hour and if you re one that knows round dance and the songs you can actually dance all night, yet everyone pays the same price. Again, absolutely everything thing above can be recalculated, weighted differently, etc. Every club is different. This may not be your club at all, maybe you have a single dance program. This is wishing for you to only have a conversation if you have dancers sitting out because of what we are doing. Last time I wrote about this subject someone agreed with what I stated but asked what was the fix. I don t know that I have the answer, every club has its own personality and leader s perspective. I do have this recommendation though. Included below is a new Caller and Cuer Confirmation Agreement. The form is designed to provide a club the ability to more clearly define the dance programs. I personally have never received an agreement with the level of rounds specified, yet I always see the square dance program defined. Please consider sharing this form with clubs in your area. Michele Vieira
