Introduction to WRO 14 Regular Elementary Category Rocket WRO-USA Last updated: 7/1/14 1

Regular Cat. Elementary: Rocket Note: there will be no wall in USA tournaments The ramp should be screwed on the table 2

Challenge Synopsis The robot must gather all of the rocket elements, assemble them in the correct order, and lift them with the launch facility The civilians need to be moved to the Safe Area and the robot needs to end in the Safe Area For official rules, visit and click on 2014 Rules and Resources link Example video: 3

Two Unknown Factors 1. the groupings of the rocket elements 2. the location of the groups 4

Groupings of rocket elements The 6 rocket elements (2red, 2 blue, and 2 white LEGO boxes) will be divided into three groups that contain 1-3 elements. Each group of elements will be stuck together, but will never be stuck together in the incorrect order (ex: white stuck to red or white in between two blues). One of the 6 groupings is randomly selected The groupings will be announced before assembly time, and will remain constant throughout the day. 5

Location of Rocket Elements Each group of blocks will be stuck together and placed in one of the yellow warehouse zones. (Blocks will be centered in the yellow warehouse zone) The studded part of the rocket element is the top The locations will be announced postquarantine and will be changed each round, but will be constant for all participants within a round. (Rule #2) 6

Launch Facility Teams build their own launch facility during the assembly time of the competition Before each match, teams place their launch facility in the launch area Just because teams need to build their launch facility at the competition does NOT mean their first experience building one should be at the competition practice building beforehand and know what you want to build Size: 25cm x 25cm; can be extended 7

Vertical Position of the Rocket To determine if the rocket counts as vertical, a wand made from LEGO axels 35 cm long and with a red mark at 25 cm is used. To count as vertical: 1. The wand must be able to go all the way through the assembled rocket 2. The wand must not extend outside area created by the ramp 3. The red mark must be below the highest part of the rocket 8

Scoring Diagram The rocket elements must be in the same color-order as shown above The lowest rocket element does not have to touch the ramp 9

Non Scoring Example 1 The top end of the rod extends out past the vertical plane of the ramp (The light blue lines indicate the vertical plane of the ramp) 10

Non Scoring Example 2 When the rod is inserted it can only go in so far before it hits the red rocket section (a), thus the red mark on the rod is exposed at the top (b) (b) (a)

Non Scoring Example 3 Again, the top end of the rod extends out past the vertical plane of the ramp (The light blue lines indicate the vertical plane of the ramp) Parts of the rocket may extend pass the vertical plane but NOT the rod.

Non Scoring Example 4 Here not only does the top of the rod extend past the the vertical plane (a), but the red mark on the rod is also exposed (b) (a) (b)

Non Scoring Example 5 Here, due to the placement of the white rocket section the angle is such that the rod is only able to go through the white section (a), thus leaving the red mark on the rod exposed (a)

Non Scoring Example 6 Even though the rod is able to go through all segments of the rocket, the angle is such that the top of the rod once again extends past the vertical plane of the ramp (a)

Question: Is this OK? (a)

Safe Area In the US, the red Safe Area will not have a barrier wall as it appears in the official rules For the robot to count as inside the Safe Area, all of the wheels must be completely in the Safe Area 17

Scoring Task Rocket Elements outside the warehouse area All Rocket Elements touching the Assembly Area at the same time At least one Rocket Element placed over ramp All Rocket Elements placed vertically All Rocket Elements in the correct order Civilians moved to Safe Area Robot finishes in Safe Area Total Point Value 5 points/element, 15 points maximum 20 points 10 points 15 points 15 points 5 points/civilian, 15 points maximum 10 points 100 points 18

Scoring (cont.) Best score out of 3 runs in the USA. Each country decided how to run competitions Tie breakers in USA include (1) score of the other round (2) additional matches(*) (*) Note that however, in Sochi time will be used. 19

Practice Scoring Watch this video: 80 points?? We think 70 points, because the robot went through the green base area. According to Rule # 17, if the robot enters the Base area, the attempt will stop. Civilians were not saved. 20

Important Rule Clarifications Robot cannot be touched. Q: Can we touch in the green base area, when the robot comes back itself? No, the game will end. Read Rule # 17. WRO is not FLL Playing field materials cannot be touched Robot may not return to Base The time limit for each match is 2 minutes The rocket elements don t have to be assembled in the Assembly Area, but they do have to all touch the Assembly Area at once to receive 20 points Lego Pneumatics allowed? Yes, General Rules

Robot Specifications Only one controller (RCX, NXT, or EV3) Up to 3 motors are allowed EV3 gyro sensor is not allowed Starting robot size: less than 25x25x25cm Robot may expand on those dimensions after starting A multiplexor (sensor or motor) is NOT allowed If any violation is found at the inspection, 3 minutes are given to fix it 22

Competition Day Bring your robot loaded with programs and parts to build your launch facility In the US, we are allowing teams to bring prebuilt robots to the competition. If your team attends the World competition, they will have to build their robot at the competition with no plans, instructions, or adult help Robots should be completely autonomous and internet access and cell phone usage in the pits is banned 23

Example Schedule for Regular Cat. 8am Doors open to teams 9am Opening Ceremonies 9:25am Unveiling of rocket element groupings 9:30am Start of the assembly period (Launch Facility) 10:30am Quarantine of robots 11am Round 1(*) Noon Lunch Break and Maintenance time 1pm Round 2(*) 2pm Round 3(*) 3:30pm Award Ceremony (*) Locations of elements announced slightly before the start of each round 24

Cost for Regular Elementary Category If you do not have a Lego robot kit, EV3 core set is recommended to purchase: $340 Registration fee: $70 Check-in fee for each competition: $30 Regular Cat. Table: (Same as FLL table) Not required Game pieces (Lego blocks and ramp) : free for the first 40 teams registered Mat: $70 plus shipping Passport fee. Note that US citizen needs visa Travel: Airfare to Sochi, Russia is relatively cheap (~$850) Lodging and meals for 3 nights in Sochi per person: $150 25

Suggested videos to watch from Russia, Taiwan, Argentina, and Germany 26
