We have 59 Rotarians and partners attending our Christmas dinner celebrations, including our Kris Kringle surprise gifts which Santa will bring to all those who have been good. Next Meetings T 18 D C D S D P 5 This week was left in the capable hands of President Elect Trish, to preside over the meeting while I was otherwise engaged in Canberra. From all accounts all went very well, with another engaging talk by Nick Farr, who has, amongst other things, climbed Mount Everest. I have had the special task this week to help Peter Flude engage with our residents in Reserve Road who will be notified by Council of our intent to hold a Farmers Market. We are being pro-active in meeting with these residents and explaining in person what we are planning. I must say the fourteen residents we have been able to connect with so far have been very positive and supportive of the market. Hopefully we will have no issues and be granted approval early in I would like to express my thanks to all members and partners of our club who have helped us through the first six months, and look forward to the busy time we have for the balance of the Rotary year. I wish you and your families a safe and relaxed break over the Christmas / New Year, and look forward to seeing you at our Golf & Fellowship event on Wednesday January 14. 3 Speaker: Nick Farr, Adventurer and Director of The Everest Academy Topic: Climbing Mt Everest, establish his business We were greatly entertained last meeting by Nick Farr. He is one of Australia s most accomplished high altitude performers and leaders. He has demonstrated the consistent ability over many years to succeed in some of the most hostile environments imaginable and he has climbed many of the world s highest mountains including Mt Everest. He has 20 years experience leading individuals and groups on trekking, climbing and skiing adventures across North America, Nepal, India, Europe, New Zealand and Australia. A lifetime of learning encompassing unthinkable lows and incredible highs. Nick s climbing efforts to date have assisted in raising over $150,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Locally, Nick works in a voluntary capacity as an ambassador for the Help Nepal Network (HeNN) and also with the Brunswick Employment Agency (BEA). BEA specialises in providing employment and training opportunities for people with physical and mental disabilities. Nick has been actively involved with BEA & HeNN since 2005 and enjoys contributing to a wide range of activities within both of these organisations. Nick is a proud husband and father of two. Nick focused his talk on his greatest climbing experience that of reaching the summit of Everest on June with Superintendent Greg Linsdell, and Sergeant John Taylor But he also told us how this achievement was closely linked to the death of his great friend Inspector Paul Carr who died besides Nick in their tent during a weeklong blizzard on Tibet's Mt Cho Oyu, in This happened during training for the Everest trip, a project which Paul has started to raise money for charity. It was clear that the Everest climb was in many ways a memorial to Paul Carr. Nick accompanied his talk with some fabulous photos some of which are shown on the next page. Some highlights; Since Sir Edmund Hilary (who Nick spoke of in reverent tones) 300+ have died Climbing Mt Everest. It is an extremely harsh environment with high altitude, extreme cold and winds, physical and mental stress along with natural hazards like avalanches and blizzards A very expensive experience about $50000 per person per attempt You may not be able to attempt the summit because of bad weather A Certificate giving a group permission to climb costs $ It takes 10 days to climb to Base camp at 8,000 metres where you spend 60 days climbing up and down to the 4 camps on the way to the Summit in incremental stages to acclimatise yourself to the altitude and to build the physical endurance required for the final climb. Many people never make it to the 4th Camp. Nick's group used a small window of opportunity during the treacherous weather conditions to climb to the top before spending about half an hour there. They set off in the middle of the night because you must reach the summit by 1.00 pm to have any chance of making it down. Coming down is only a little easier than going up. Nick emphasised that had a team of 6 Sherpa's and many others in the support team without which you could not make the attempt. He also told us how the rubbish has now been cleaned up around the base camps and how each expedition must take out everything they bring in. Nick has spent 10 years in Nepal and strong friendships were formed with his Sherpa team, and in 2006 they founded Trek Climb Ski. Nick is also Director of The Everest Academy, a business that designs and delivers elite leadership development and team building programs in the Everest region of Nepal. We found one doing its passes from north to south. It s at least 300 meters in front of the lava spout.
