Raymond of Bay City, Mich., to win the title match, , to claim the $10,000 first prize. I was never on the show the entire tournament, Ciminelli said, but I ve been working on my perseverance and it worked. There were over 100 guests that attended, with large groups supporting each of the night s honorees, in addition to these were four current Hall of Fame members, Carolyn Dorin- Ballard (2000), Mike Branson (2004), Jerry Srock (2005), and James Askins (2007). 2 Page 2 Thursday, October 6, 2016 THE BOWLING NEWS Random Thoughts I had the honor of being the MC for the recent North Central Texas USBC Hall of Fame & Awards banquet last week. This was the first time since 2011 that the NCTUSBC (former FWBA) association has held an awards banquet, along with new inductees into the HoF. The event was very well attended, with over 100 guests for an evening of fun and fellowship. The four inductees were Goose Wall Sr., Cheryl Newman, Sherrie Slaughter, and Brad Hunter. Each new member has spent a lifetime in the bowling game in a variety of roles. Some have managed centers, some have given their time to grow the youth, some are proprietors, BUY - SELL AMF - BRUNSWICK EQUIPMENT - COMPLETE PACKAGES WORLD S LARGEST NEW - USED SPARE PARTS INVENTORY ALL AMF BUMPER PARTS: XS QBUMP, DURABOWL AND GEN II IN STOCK Tucker Bowling Equipment Co. 609 N.E. 3rd St. Tulia, Texas Call (806) Fax (806) Tony Franklin, Publisher Bowling Parts, Inc. I know each of them personally and I was proud for them, and proud to be there to watch. Few of us in life will get that opportunity to be in a Hall of Fame, and fewer yet will get to thank those that paved their way in a public forum. That s why I enjoyed it so much, hearing from each new HoF member on why they have spent so much time and effort in the bowling industry, and what it has meant to them. The Hall of Fame is a great honor, and I m already looking forward to 2017 to see who gets inducted next. There are many, many deserving candidates, FOUNDED AND PUBLISHED BY JOE GENNARO FROM so if you know of someone that should be in the hall, get involved and nominate, that s the first step x-x-x-x-x-x Well it s my favorite time of the year baseball playoff time baby!! Your Texas Rangers had an outstanding season with a record, their second best regular season ever, and are poised to keep it going hopefully. They will begin their playoff run this Thursday against SASBA Continued from Page 1 on the team and if both of the other players are over 50...they can t both be champions. The following week we are at Plano Super Bowl for the 60/50/Lady trio. 6 games qualifying on Saturday, four on Sunday, then Baker matchplay. either the Baltimore Orioles or Toronto Blue Jays. As much as I want a little revenge on Toronto, they also scare the crap out of me, it s a tough matchup for the Rangers, but the bottom line is, come Thursday it s on! However, before we get to Thursday, we do have a little house cleaning to do 2016 Ranger predictions review. Every predictor I asked had the Rangers making the playoffs, so that is one check in the box. Chris Johnson was closest to their total wins with WHY ADVERTISE? Call us for more information a guess of 91 wins; Karleen Reynolds was next with 90 wins. Not surprisingly, those two are also the only ones that have predicted the Rangers will go to the World Series; I predicted that the Rangers would beat KC in the division series then lose to Toronto in the ALCS. What does all this mean not much at all, except that it s still baseball season and the playoffs start on Thursday Lets Go Rangers!! Dead Money Needs New Name in Defense of PBA Team Challenge Title Underdog team of friends to return to South Point in Las Vegas for second annual PBA team event LAS VEGAS (Sept. 28, 2016) A year ago, an underdog team of friends calling themselves Dead Money, pulled off a stunning upset when they won the inaugural Professional Bowlers Association Team Challenge at South Point Bowling Plaza. The team, consisting of five players with a combined total of one PBA Tour title, was named after a poker term related to money left in the pot by players who have folded their hands. But after winning the 2015 PBA Team Challenge, teammates Danielle McEwan, Alex Cavagnaro, Matt O Grady, Matt McNiel and Anthony Pepe (the winner of the 2014 PBA Cheetah Open) will no longer be considered dead money when they return to the PBA Fall Classic presented by South Point, Oct. 29-Nov. 2. The Fall Classic will get underway when Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., opens defense of his PBA Xtra Frame South Point Las Vegas Open title, Oct The PBA Tour title event will include two eight-game qualifying rounds at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by two eight-game match play rounds for the top 16 qualifiers on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The top five stepladder finals will follow at approximately 5:30 p.m. All times are Pacific. Team competition begins on Monday, Oct. 31, with team qualifying rounds at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., followed by a 10-game round of Baker format match play Tuesday at 9 a.m. The top four teams will bowl in the Baker format stepladder finals at approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday. Both the PBA Xtra Frame South Point Las Vegas Open and the PBA Team Challenge are open to non-members as well as members. The entry fee for the Las Vegas Open is $300 for members and $350 for nonmembers; the entry fees for the PBA Team Challenge are $500 for each member and $600 for each non-member. In 2015, Dead Money proved chemistry among teammates is vital to success when it upset 4 Majors and 100 at 1, a team representing 46 PBA Tour titles (PBA Tour champions Bill O Neill, Tommy Jones, Wes Malott, Jason Belmonte and Tom Daugherty), but the underdogs upset the favored 4 Majors, Both teams will return to the PBA Team Challenge as contenders for the projected $30,000 top prize along with new this year PBA Tour titles for each winning team member. Dead Money returns with its lineup intact. 4 Majors will be the unofficially-named 5 Majors with Chris Barnes back in the lineup (Daugherty filled in for Barnes who was recovering from surgery in 2015). With Barnes joining Malott, Belmonte, Jones and O Neill, the 5 Majors now represent a combined 64 PBA Tour titles including 13 majors. Also in the 2016 field is a potent team of Brunswick staff members (PBA Hall of Famers Parker Bohn III and Walter Ray Williams Jr. plus Tour champions Ciminelli, Sean Rash and Tom Smallwood); a star-studded international team (England s Dom Barrett Continued on Page 3 Our 60th Year

(Sept. 30, 2016) Ten-time PBA Tour champion Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, makes his first PBA Summer/Fall Swing television appearance as top qualifier in the PBA Badger Open finals Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET on the CBS Sports Network. Malott, the Player of the Year, earned top qualifier honors by beating Player of the Year Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., , in the final position round match at Thunderbowl Lanes in CIMINELLI Continued from Page 1 was on a slide coming into the tournament after a couple of recent second-place finishes, so this one is pretty special. Ciminelli, who had the choice of lane conditions based on his qualifying position, selected the unusual 40-foot strips pattern one of three used in the tournament, which was organized by fellow PBA Tour competitor Sean Rash. The strips pattern involved what PBA Xtra Frame announce Randy Pedersen called moguls alternating threeboard peaks of heavy oil next to four-board valleys of very little oil across the lanes. Both are contenders for 2016 PBA Rookie of the Year honors. Lavoie will meet three-time reigning PBA Player of the Year and 12-time Tour winner Jason Belmonte of Australia in the opening stepladder match. Belmonte, who finished third in the Wolf Open, will be trying for his first win in Belmonte claimed the fifth spot in the Badger finals when Denmark s Thomas Larsen missed a spare in the 10th frame of his position round match. The winner of the opening match will meet Fach, who won the Barbasol PBA Players Championship for his first title earlier in the year to become the first Canadian to win a PBA Tour title. The winner of the second match will meet Rash in the semifinal. Rash will be trying for his 10th PBA Tour win, which would make him eligible for future PBA Hall of Fame consideration. The Badger Open is the third and final animal pattern event, all three of which served as qualifying stages in determining the finalists for the PBA Detroit Open, which is the fourth PBA Tour title event included in the PBA Fall Swing. The Badger Open winner also earns an automatic berth in the King of the Swing finale to the Fall Swing television series. The PBA Fall Swing is one of the PBA Tour s most challenging events, requiring players to perform at a high level on three distinctly different lane conditioning patterns (the short 32-foot Wolf pattern, flat 40-foot Bear pattern and the long 52-foot Badger pattern). Overall performances on all three lane conditions determined the Detroit Open finalists. CIMINELLI Continued from Page 3 After finding the condition wasn t playing the way he had hoped, Ciminelli moved inside and struck on five of his first six shots to build a big enough lead to hold on. Raymond, a sixth-year PBA member who was trying for his first PBA Tour title, was behind by 43 pins in the fifth frame, but made a ball change and threw five strikes in a row to get back into the match. Needing three strikes in the 10th to tie Ciminelli and force a roll-off, he left the 6-10 on his second try in the final frame. Raymond advanced to the title match with a comefrom-behind win over Kristopher Prather of Milton, Fla., ending Prather s bid for his first PBA Tour title. Prather led into the final frame as Raymond struggled to find the pocket on the PBA strips lane condition, which he had selected for the match. But after rolling only one strike in the first seven frames, Raymond put together a late string of four strikes to take the lead and he won the match when Prather, needing a strike, left a solid 7 pin on his first shot in the 10th frame. Prather spoiled PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. s bid for his first PBA Tour title since winning the 2010 USBC Masters, , in the first match of the four-player stepladder finals. Prather, as the higher qualifier, selected the flat U.S. Open lane condition for the match and threw an early turkey to take a 23-pin lead after five frames that Williams was unable to overcome. The Xtra Frame PBA Tour Series continues next weekend when Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac, Fla., hosts the PBA Reality Check Tamarac Open presented by Xtra Frame. The series, which will reward the overall points leader with a $10,000 bonus, concludes with the PBA Xtra Frame South Point Las Vegas Open Oct. 31-Nov. 1. While different languages may have made the dialogue incomprehensible to some, the content likely was the same, with competitors from 15 countries recapping the day on the lanes at the 2016 Pan American Bowling Confederation Adult Championships. Regardless, everyone present was connected by two common passions - bowling and competing for their countries. About six rows behind the driver, phone in hand and trying to be heard above the chatter without yelling, Colombian Maria Rodriguez repeated herself, "hamburguesa con queso, hamburguesa no tomate, pollo y arroz..." Just minutes after being beaten out of the trios gold medal at Bolera Departamental, the 2014 United States Bowling Congress Queens champion was ordering dinner for her team and the members of Team USA, three of whom just rallied to deny her a spot at the top of the medal stand in her home country. Bowl for the Cure, a yearround fundraising initiative sponsored by the United States Bowling Congress in partnership with Susan G. Komen, has made total contributions of more than $11 million to Susan G. Komen since The Bowl Pink Hero campaign will focus on showcasing the work of associations, leagues, bowling centers and individuals who are doing more to support Bowl for the Cure and raise awareness about breast cancer. The success of Bowl for the Cure is because of the efforts of our bowlers and associations across the country, USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. They are the ones who put together the tournaments, silent auctions and other fundraisers, and it is because of their hard work and generosity that Bowl for the sportsmanship was one of many throughout the weeklong event, where Rodriguez and her teammates played host, interpreter, travel agent, concierge, tour guide and more, all while performing admirably in front of friends, family and the hometown fans. As competitors, the Colombians are talented and fierce and have settled comfortably among the top performers on the Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour. However, Rodriguez, her teammates and most of the PWBA players, are able to leave that ferocity on the lanes. Once their bowling shoes come off, the PWBA Tour stars are friends, roommates and confidants. "It's always hard when you get beat, but we left it all out on the lanes, along with quite a few pins," Rodriguez said. "We sat in the stands together and watched (Team USA), which is all we could do, and they bowled incredible. These events have some great bowlers, and you always know you'll have to be at your best to win. After five or 10 minutes off by yourself, all you can do is congratulate them on the win." The next day, the momentum swung in favor of the home team. Colombia opened the team event with an intimidating 1,218 game, making a statement and building a lead that would prove to be crucial. Colombia would hold a 135- pin advantage over the United States after five of the six team games in what would end up being a two-team race for the gold. Neither team had a particularly strong start in the final game, but Team USA used a late surge to eliminate the deficit. Until a 7-10 split and a missed single pin in the final frame, it looked like the United States might be able to shut out an unraveling Colombian team. Instead, the U.S. left just enough room for Colombia to take its first women's team title at the PABCON Championships. After Juliana Franco tossed THE BOWLING NEWS Thursday, October 6, 2016 Page 5 Cure is able to raise awareness and contribute to the fight against breast cancer. For the month of October, Bowl for the Cure is asking associations to start the Bowl Pink challenge and set a goal of raising $500 in honor of Bowl for the Cure. Donations can be mailed to USBC or sent online at BOWL.com/BFTC. To ensure your association s donation is counted, please clearly mark all donations to USBC headquarters with your association name. Also in support of the Bowl Pink Hero Campaign, the USBC Bowling Store will have a new Hero collection of Bowl for the Cure t-shirts and 25 percent of proceeds from Bowl for the Cure merchandise sales will be donated directly to Susan G. Komen. Bowl for the Cure also three strikes in her 10th frame, two of the PWBA Tour's biggest stars sealed the deal. Rocio Restrepo and Clara Guerrero did what they've dreamed of, and many expected them to do, as they both doubled in the final frame to win gold, just 11 pins ahead of the United States. 6 Page 6 Thursday, October 6, 2016 THE BOWLING NEWS Fort Worth s Kerry Fulford Earns 2016 PBA50 Dick Weber Sportsmanship Award CHICAGO (Sept. 29, 2016) -- Bowling in his first season full-time on the PBA50 Tour, 64-year-old Kerry Fulford of Fort Worth, Texas was selected as the winner of the 2016 PBA50 Dick Weber Sportsmanship Award as voted on by his fellow players. Tom Carter (last year s Dick Weber Sportsmanship recipient) told me that receiving the award was as good, if not better than winning a title, said Fulford. I ve never won a title but I would have to agree with Tom on that. Because of a bad back, which was injured while serving in the U.S. Army in the mid-70s, Fulford has his good and bad days on the PBA50 Tour. I decided that I felt well enough to go full time this year, said Fulford, who has bowled in PBA50 events since The best I can be is 90 percent. It s something I just have to deal with. Just to be able to be out here with all these guys is great. Even though realistically I can t be competitive day-in and day-out, I go into it thinking I can win, otherwise, why show up? Despite his back ailment, Fulford did throw a 300 game in the PBA50 National Championship, the final tournament of the season. Until I learned I got the (sportsmanship) award the 300 game was probably the highlight of the season and to do it in the last tournament of the season was extra special, said Fulford, who began bowling in PBA competition in I learned early on how important it was to be respectful of everyone in the sport, from the players, to the fans, sponsors and proprietors. Without them we couldn t do it. Among other top votegetters for the award were Paul McCordic, John Dudak, Warren Burr and Sam Maccarone. The Dick Weber Sportsmanship Award is named after the late PBA Hall of Famer who among his many accomplishments in the sport won 30 PBA Tour and six PBA50 Tour titles. Hamilton paid tribute to the seven men who have been responsible for bringing professional bowling to the grassroots level for years the QubicaAMF PBA Regional managers along with their leader, PBA Director of Regional and PBA50 Tournaments, John Weber. The other members of the Super Seven are PBA East Region manager Russ Mills, PBA South Region manager Sam Zurich, PBA Central Region manager Bobby Jakel, PBA Midwest Region manager Rich Weber, PBA Southwest Region manager Pete McCordic and PBA West and Northwest Region manager Gary Mage. The seven men combine to produce more than 170 tournaments for men, women and senior bowlers each year, giving the future stars of professional bowling an opportunity to develop their skills against proven stars in close-to-home, affordable events while bringing high-level PBA competition to the grassroots public across America (and, now, in Japan as well). 7 Indiana s EJ Tackett Overcomes Slow Start to Win PBA Bear Open For Third Career Title ALLEN PARK, Mich. (Sept. 28, 2016) EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind., threw critical back-to-back strikes in the 10th frame to overcome back-to-back open frames early in the title match to defeat Sweden s Jesper Svensson, , and win the PBA Bear Open, the second event of the PBA Fall Swing at Thunderbowl Lanes. The tournament finals aired Wednesday on CBS Sports Network. Tackett, the 2013 PBA Rookie of the Year, prevented the 21-year-old Swedish lefthanded two-hander from winning his fourth title of the year, instead claiming his third career PBA Tour title. In winning his second title of the year, Tackett joined Svensson and Texas teenager Anthony Simonsen, a two-time title winner, as the only three players to win more than once on the PBA Tour in Tackett, who qualified second for the stepladder final, recovered in the match after leaving a 4-6 split in the second frame and 7-10 split in the third frame. Svensson held a four-pin lead in the ninth frame with both bowlers working on a strike. I didn t panic but it was do or die at that point, Tackett said after the two splits. I had to do something so I went with a small adjustment with my hand position and fortunately it worked. When Svensson bowled a nine count on his first shot in the 10th frame, Tackett extended his string of strikes with a double in the 10th to take the win. I knew sitting there I had a good chance because after the fourth frame I made the adjustment I needed to make to get to the pocket, Tackett said. It was just a matter of did I have At Red Bird Lanes Alexander handles 717, Cathey rocks 675 enough time to catch him. I ve been in that position before where you needed a strike to win the match, and those always seem to be more satisfying when you win that way, he continued. It was Tackett s first win on national television. He won his previous titles in the PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open earlier this season and the 2015 Lubbock Sports Open. Both events were streamed live on PBA s online bowling channel Xtra Frame. Svensson, a leading contender for PBA Player of the Year honors after winning the PBA Rookie of the Year in 2015, is the first player to win five PBA Tour titles by age 21. Earlier in the year, he became the youngest player ever to win the FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions followed by wins in the Brunswick Euro Challenge in Munich, Germany and the WBT Thailand in Bangkok. He won his first two titles in The stepladder final began with No. 4 qualifier John Szczerbinski of N. All shows air at 9 p.m. ET. With his victory, Tackett joined Wolf Open titlist Tom Daugherty as the first two players to earn berths in the King of the Swing telecast, which will feature the four PBA Fall Swing title winners plus the player who finishes highest in overall points without winning a title. The 2016 PWBA Tour season included bowlers from nearly two dozen countries with Restrepo (twice) and Guerrero each claiming titles, along with Singapore's Bernice Lim, Cherie Tan and New Hui Fen. Four of the six Team USA women in Cali for the 2016 PABCON Adult Championships also found the winner's circle on the PWBA Tour this year. Shannon O'Keefe had a Tour-best three wins, Danielle McEwan claimed her second career title and Bryanna Coté and Josie Earnest each captured their first PWBA Tour titles. Team USA veteran Shannon Pluhowsky had five championship-round appearances, while Missy Parkin, the 2011 USBC Queens champion, continued to be a threat as well. Many others among the 79 women in the PABCON field also were PWBA Tour regulars or dabblers during the 2016 season. Not that the talent level in previous PABCON events wasn't top-notch, but it was clear the players were more prepared and confident. During the 14-week PWBA Tour season, which ended the first weekend of September, the players competed individually, but with years of bowling for their countries and colleges, the transition to being part of a team was as seamless as Rodriguez, now a resident of Austin, Texas, ordering dinner in Spanish for 15 people. "We're definitely more prepared, since we just got done with the 14-week season, and we got to bowl in different places on a variety of lane conditions," Pluhowsky said. "The mindset is a little bit different in the team environment now, compared to the Tour, where you're bowling individually, but it was pretty easy to get back in that mode. For a long time, we only had a few events outside of Team USA, so most of our experience was together as a group." Many Team USA players have been part of the program for years, even spending time together on Junior Team USA, so there's already a special PBA Kokomo Central/Midwest Classic presented by Security Federal Savings at Heritage Lanes in Kokomo, Ind., and the DHC Cheetah Open Doubles at Nagoya Grandbowl in Japan. For complete QubicaAMF PBA Regional schedules, rules and entry information, visit pba.com, open the schedules tab and click on QubicaAMF Regional Tours to find the event(s) in your area. For more information about QubicaAMF, visit www. qubicaamf.com or, for social media posts, visit QAMFSponsorship1. bond. Add in more than a dozen weeks of travel for the PWBA Tour, and they're spending more time together than ever before. "As a group, we're pretty close, and being together week in and week out adds to that," Pluhowsky said. "Of course, we have people we hang out and travel with, but we're still one team, and we all love competing together for our country." Team USA and Colombia definitely outshined the rest of the field at the 2016 PABCON Adult Championships, claiming 16 of the 19 medals up for grabs at Bolera Departamental. The United States took gold in singles (Parkin), trios (O'Keefe, Earnest, Pluhowsky) and Masters (Pluhowsky), silver in team and bronze in singles (Coté), trios (McEwan, Coté, Parkin), all-events (McEwan) and Masters (O'Keefe, Parkin). Colombia won gold in doubles, team and all-events, silver in singles, trios and allevents and bronze in doubles. Mexico earned a silver medal in Masters courtesy of PWBA standout Sandra Gongora and bronze in team, while the silver in doubles went to a pair of USBC Collegiate players from Aruba, Kamilah Dammers and Thashaina Seraus. Again, much of the players' success simply was because they're incredibly talented and well-coached, but the competitive year on the PWBA Tour definitely elevated the performance level. "This all has been such a great experience, and getting to bowl 14 events on different patterns this year really helped me develop more as a bowler," Restrepo said. "It gave me the opportunity to get to know my arsenal and what I'm able to do physically, especially on the short patterns, which I struggled on in the past." Restrepo, a former standout at Wichita State, proved how far she's come by collecting four medals at the PABCON Women's Championships, which was contested on the 36-foot Beijing oil pattern. She won doubles with Guerrero, earned silver in trios with Guerrero and Rodriguez, stepped up to help with team and finished with silver in all-events behind Guerrero. "I feel much sharper this week because of the PWBA Tour, but I'm also much more QUICK NOTES PBA Tour champion Rhino Page and the Tyler Cacioppo family have announced the eighth annual Rhino Page & Friends Lace Up to Strike Out Crohn s and Colitis fundraiser is scheduled for 7-10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at South Levittown Lanes in Levittown, N.Y. Since Page befriended Cacioppo, a Crohn s victim, in 2009, the family s fundraiser has raised more than $160,000 to combat Crohn s and colitis. calm about the tournament and bowling itself," Restrepo said. "All the extra games this year really helped me be strong and prepared. It also helped me learn what some of my weaknesses were, so I could work on those things with my coaches." Another focus for Restrepo has been on simplifying her equipment selection and relying on the things she can do physically to make a six-ball arsenal far more versatile. Some Abralon pads, polish, different hand position or speed variation could expand the possibilities tenfold. "I don't think I would've learned the things I did or been able to accomplish what I have if I didn't bowl as much and on as many patterns," Restrepo said. "Winning on Tour also gives you a lot more confidence." Being in her home country and a familiar bowling center definitely helped Restrepo's confidence at the PABCON Championships. The Colombian team trials take place at Bolera Departamental each year, so there's some familiarity and comfort just walking in the door. Additionally, the men bowled first this year, so Colombia's coaches were able to take great notes about the tendencies of the center with the region's top talent on the lanes. But, beyond all the studying and science and confidence from a successful year on the PWBA Tour, there's one common denominator for those who carried the momentum of a successful PWBA season into a memorable event representing their native lands - hard work and dedication. The players openly and clearly are grateful for the chance to bowl for a living, and they'll do all they can to keep it going. "With the Tour back, I'm definitely more focused on staying active and making sure I'm in better shape, which includes more time at the gym than before," Pluhowsky said. "It's important to be strong physically and mentally for the long season and sometimes long days of competition. It's such a great opportunity. We all want to be at our best and succeed individually. We also want to see the PWBA Tour succeed, too."

A Salute to the PBA's 'Super Seven' Luby Publishing Inc. President, Keith Hamilton, broke with Bowlers Journal International's decades-old tradition in the October issue, noted for its annual listing of bowling's most influential power players, by recognizing a group of individuals he called the "PBA's Super Seven." 17 THE BOWLING NEWS Thursday, October 6, 2016 Page 17 Just Paying Attention This week's first segment could easily fit into the annual JPA Troy Walker media columns, so I wouldn't blame you if you skipped it and read the other items first. But if you really want a peak about the scope and strength of marketing in today's mobile technological age, you may want to read it soon. Although being old enough to remember when color and cable television were still kind of 'new', this technology-oriented world is moving at a faster pace than we realize. Last week, the Mobile Marketing Association hosted its SM2 Innovation Summit By Mark London Mark@TheBowlingNews.net which promised to explain how it's no longer about mobile marketing, it's about marketing in a mobile age. According to a press release, sessions would focus on helping brands optimize the use of technologies driving the next wave of mobile innovation, learning how location can be the fuel that powers mobile programming strategies, and creating shareable moments with valuable content that must be shared. This next one is a biggie: influencing Generation Z to win their attention and business. Pretty basic strategy there. Several scenarios in the Emmy Awardwinning series 'Mad Men' showed how this was lacking. Although a fictional series, numerous times the advertising firm looked at only major accounts using print media, i.e., magazines and newspapers. Despite its growing popularity in the early to mid 1960's, television was looked upon as a forgotten entity. Even the television account head had an office away from the others. That premise did change by the end of the series, set in the early 1970's, highlighted in the final episode claiming Don Draper had the premise of the landmark 1971 Coca-Cola 'I'd Like To Teach The World to Sing' television ad. But let's step back for a moment. If Generation Z, by common definition, were born starting in the late-1990's, have grown up being comfortable with technology and interaction on social media. So that would include today's high schoolers and college-age young adults. Millennials were born in the early to mid-1980's with the turn of the 21st Century being near their high school graduation. Generation Xers were born starting somewhere in the mid-1960's to the early-1980's. Successful marketing to each generation was defined by using the prevalent media of the day. Print media began a slow decline in the 1970's as magazines and newspapers became fewer and fewer into the 1980's. Over-the-air television gained strength in the 1960's. Cable and satellite television continued that momentum into the early 1990's. Digital media found a foothold and now has morphed into electronic-based interpersonal communication, first through the internet, and Eddie Neely , Danielle Shea , Josh Herrick , Danielle Shea , Jerry Kilpatrick , Christine Goins , Chance Maruna , Bert Becker Tommy Hall 254, Justin Pusateri 665, Nyree Bradford 222, Barbara Person 531, Heath Fletcher 279, Chris Masters 692, Kisha Thomas , Stan Adams 245, Bernie Gill 679, Danielle Shea Ronald Saquinsin 289, Jenn Shurley 253, Danielle Shea 586. Take a breath now and let that sink in for a moment. Ok, so now what 'brands' were participating in the summit? See if you recognize a few yourself and those that might do some business with anyone in the bowing industry. The Coca-Cola Company, AllState Insurance, Bank of America, Hershey Foods, Campbell's Soup, Citibank, IBM, E*Trade, and MasterCard were just a few of the represented companies, with Cadillac and Estee' Lauder thrown in for good measure. Granted, some on this list bowling doesn't deal with every day, but some of the people these companies are trying to reach we do deal with every day. So let's hope bowling's message, no matter whom we are trying to reach at any given moment, doesn't look out of touch to whomever it is designed to reach. 18 Page 18 Thursday, October 6, 2016 THE BOWLING NEWS JUST PAYING ATTENTION Continued from Page 17 If this is even a sliver of Marketing 101 in present day, how does bowling effectively get its message across? That will be addressed in a future JPA. ############## In a story appearing last week on New England Sports Network's website, nesn.com, Amiel Sawdaye, the Boston Red Sox's vice president of amateur and international scouting, said the power surge this season of American League MVP candidate (and PBA World Series of Bowling participant) Mookie Betts can be in part credited to (may want to sit down for this) his bowling talent as a youngster. In comments on The Ringer's MLB Podcast, Sawdaye believes Betts' upper body power control comes from the skill of repeating his muscle memory for his bowling swing. Here is Sawdaye's explanation. The one thing we spent a lot of time on is body control. You go up and you gotta bowl. It's hard to repeat your bowling stroke, and obviously this guy's muscle memory allows him to repeat his bowling stroke day in and day out. He's bowling perfect games and bowling these ridiculous numbers at 16-years-old. The thing we didn't think about was he was bowling since 3 or 4-years-old. I think that actually play a little into his (batting) swing, Sawdaye said. Sawdaye went on to add Betts probably has some of the strongest hands coming from BARGAIN NIGHTS!!! KILLEEN BOWLERAMA 2011 draft, because of gripping a bowling ball. As most readers know, it is not the strength, but the flexibility of the hand and the touch applied to a bowling ball. But I can't recall a major league scouting director directly attributing success of one of his teams' rising stars to bowling. Wonder if this will come up on the telecasts as the Red Sox progress through the MLB playoffs starting this week. I can think of a former major leaguer who's been pretty successful on the PBA50 Tour who could shed some light on that point. OK, there's another item in a future JPA. ############### How about another USBC Open Championships in Texas? This one could be in 2022 in Houston. But exactly where in H-Town, you ask? Last week, the Harris County Board of Commissioners approved a $105 million project to repurpose the historic Houston Astrodome. The first construction phase will raise the level of the floor two stories, adding 1,400 parking spaces. According to the Houston Chronicle and KPRC-TV, officials believe the raised floor would make the Dome more suitable for festivals and conferences with the 550,000 square feet. If you have been there or remember it from games on TV, the movable seat sections (that converted the floor from baseball to football/ rodeo and back) would be dismantled and the floor raised to the top of where those sections reached the mezzanine, which N. 38th Street KILLEEN, TEXAS bowling@hot.rr.com is present street level. Currently, the USBC requires 90,000 square feet of unobstructed floor space (no pillars) with a minimum thirty-foot floor ceiling for a 56 to 60-lane installation. As written in this space before, The Dome was briefly considered to be a candidate for the 2008 USBC-OC after the Astros moved out after the 1999 season. However, the HCHSA told the Greater Houston USBC in 2000 there was no guarantee the Dome would still be standing in The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority (HCHSA) is still interested in hosting a USBC Championship, whether it be Women's or Open, Greater Houston USBC Association Director David Fields said. Talks will get a little more serious with HCHSA after NRG Stadium hosts Super Bowl LI February 5, Harris County Commissioners must submit plans to the Texas Historic Commission for approval sometime this month before any construction could begin. The National Park Service placed the Dome on the National Register of Historic Places in January 2014, after being nominated by the Commission for designation in October The $10.5 million design phase will take at least one year and the $94.5 million construction phase would follow. Project funding would come from Harris County hotelmotel occupancy taxes, parking revenues, and monies from the county's general fund. 19 THE BOWLING NEWS Thursday, October 6, 2016 Page 19 Bowling Update From Ten Pins & More * For five years in a row, Tenpins & More league bowler, Lance Emerson has been named area "Bowler of the Year", no mean feat in a region that has thousands of weekly competition bowlers in hundreds of different leagues. Monday, he showed again why, by leading from start to finish in the Scratch Match- Play series, presented by Shamrock Foods, at Tenpins & More on Deborah Road. Emerson qualified in first place of sixteen who made the cut, opening with 257 and 289 and never looked back, carding 1,423 over six games. In his run to the championship round in bracket play, he beat local Gil Chavez , then Chris Payne of Albuquerque and ex-washington state bowler, Brian Bledsoe before winning the winner's bracket over Dan Brenning. Bledsoe made his move, eliminating multi-title winning Dana Miller-Mackie , then Payne and Brenning before meeting Emerson for the crown. However, three consecutive open frames on lane 4 spelt doom for Bledsoe as Emerson stayed "clean" (no opens). Bledsoe threw five strikes in his last six shots but it was too late as Emerson doubled in the tenth frame to win, going away by The next event in the series is scheduled for the weekend of January 6-8. * Qualifying has opened for the 17th annual New Mexico Games - Bowling tournament, held exclusively at Tenpins & More. There are fifteen separate divisions for men, women, seniors and youth bowlers, with preliminary finals set the first week of November, followed by state finals there later that month. The top three in each division qualify to represent the state in the National State Games finals. * Robert Edwards cleaned up in last Sunday's 5-game "Pentathabowl" tournament at Tenpins & More in Rio Rancho. Edwards entered twice and finished first and second in overall totals with 1,122 and 1,098 respectively. He also won the game in which bowlers were given automatic strikes in the third, sixth and ninth frames. Other place-getters were Tiffany Ming third with 1,052, Maria Armstrong fourth with 1,036 and Ron Michel next on 1,027. According to SmartCEO's website, the Family Business Awards program honors family businesses that make up the backbone of the American economy. From small, boutique operations to large, multi-generational firms, these entrepreneurial families are building business legacies that will last for generations to come. More than two-thirds of privately held businesses in the U.S. are family-owned firms. That's why SmartCEO is celebrating the family businesses that are successful, growing and moving America forward. Here is a profile of LaSpina, President of Maple Family Centers, currently featured on the SmartCEO site: FOUNDING PRINCIPLES: Maple Family Centers is a family business that sells fun, and has since 1960, says President John M. LaSpina. The company has five bowling centers in two states, and operates under a philosophy LaSpina learned from his father. "My father, who started all this, would say to us, 'Treat your key staff and your customers as if they were extended family,' and that's basically what we've always done," says LaSpina. Fun Fact: LaSpina threw the first ball that opened the company's first bowling center. ONBOARDING FAMILY: LaSpina bases his onboarding process on Jack Mitchell's book, "Hug Your Customers." Mitchell writes about wanting his kids to gain experience outside the family business. "When you enter the family business right from the womb, you don't see the real world as other people see it, and I've taken those lessons in that book and applied them," says LaSpina. All family members who work for Maple Family Centers, including LaSpina himself, started their careers elsewhere. LaSpina says this process also helps family members gain valuable, transferable skills. CULTURAL VALUES: Family is an important aspect of Maple Family Centers' culture - that's why it's the company's middle name. With that cultural mentality, says LaSpina, comes loyalty and commitment. In addition to these aspects of the company's culture, Maple Family Centers is dedicated to maintaining a spirit of giving. The company is involved in several charities, like Fight for Sight and Bowlers to Veterans Link. LASTING LEGACY: LaSpina says his company's legacy is to serve as a valuable member of the community. This is a lesson his father passed on to him, and it's one LaSpina has also passed on to his children. "Go the extra mile for your neighbor and do the same thing for your customers," says LaSpina. That made a lot more sense to him than continuing to lease the building for use as a bowling center for $5,000 per month. The new owner is planning to remodel the building for medical offices. "It was really important to start this week well, especially because we're bowling on a short pattern, which hasn't really been my strong suit in the past and is something I've really been working on," Parkin said. "I'm really happy with today, and it definitely will help me feel more comfortable out here the rest of the week." Colombia native, Clara Guerrero, captured the silver, while Team USA's Bryanna Coté claimed the bronze.
