2 By Jean Tondola-Smith, Ohio USBC WBA President What Is Bowling? The definition of bowling is a game played by rolling a ball so that it knocks downs pins. What does bowling mean to you? Bowling means so much more than rolling a ball so that it knocks down pins to me. It means having fun with my friends and acquaintances in addition to being a competitive sport. Most of my dearest and closest friends are those I have met through bowling. I have friends I met thirtyfive or more years ago. We met through bowling leagues, became friends, and are still friends. The average bowler is bowling for the enjoyment they have while bowling with their friends. Sure, we all want to bowl well, most of us want to win, but that is not the real reason we bowl. It is a night or day to be with our friends and socialize. We go to state championship tournaments or to national championship tournaments, all hoping to do well in the tournament, but the real reason we go is the weekend or week with our friends to have fun. I bet every one of you reading this article can relate to what I am saying. We all have the memories of events that happened at almost every tournament we went out of town to participate in. Those are lasting memories we will have and cherish for the rest of our lives. There are some bowlers who take the sport as strictly a competitive sport and have a completely different feeling towards the sport than the majority of us recreational bowlers do, and I am glad that we have the professional bowlers to promote the sport. The sport, and yes bowling is a sport, has given me so much more than I ever dreamed I would have received from participating in it when I first began. Not only has it given me the friendships I have but it has given me the memories as I have stated previously and yes sometimes satisfaction from being a part of this great sport. I only hope a new bowler who is joining a league for the first time this bowling season can receive what I have been blessed to have received from the sport of bowling. Where has this summer gone? The bowling season is rapidly approaching. I hope all of you will be returning to participate in your league or leagues this season and please ask a friend, a neighbor, or relative to join you. If you do not bring a new bowler with you, please remember to welcome that new bowler or bowlers into your league and make them feel wanted so they will want to return to this fun sport after bowling for one season. Show each new member of your league what a great sport they have become a member of. I would like to encourage you all to get your entries into the Ohio USBC WBA Championship Tournament, the Ohio USBC WBA Senior Tournament, (if your are eligible) to the first Ohio USBC WBA Senior Queens Tournament, and the Ohio USBC WBA Queens Tournament. Again, ask someone who has never participated in these tournaments to join you. Wishing you all a great new bowling season and have fun. August 2012 Ohio Hi-Lites Page 2

15 Buckeye Bowling Writers - Ruth Heath-Trott & Lori Gillen The question that seems to come to the forefront in peoples' minds when they are asked to do something is; "What's in it for me?" And as most of us are extremely busy, this might be an honest response. But let's take that one step farther and explore exactly what we are asking you to do. The Buckeye Bowling Writers are looking for qualified candidates for the 2013 prestigious Mary Jannetto Award for Local Bowling Promotion. This award recognizes an outstanding Ohio USBC member for their overall efforts in promotion of bowling. What's in it for you is: (1) very good promotion of your own local association; (2) public recognition at the state level; (3) good will within your local for singling out the special someone who goes beyond the norm and showing them how much you respect the job they are doing; (4) and lastly, a feeling of satisfaction in rewarding an association member for a job well-done. All four of these goals can be accomplished with one simple effort on your part. Your candidate could very well be our next recipient of the prestigious Mary Jannetto Award. Deadline for submitting nominations is November 15, so it's not too early to start putting together the information needed to accomplish your goals. Forms will be included in a fall blast from the Ohio USBC WBA to all local associations and also included in the August issue of The Write Angle. - Ruth Heath-Trott As volunteers, we constantly and consistently hear What can I do to help? Just tell me what you need me to do. Help us honor those ladies who are always there when we need them, willing to assist no matter what we need of them. The Ruth Heath-Trott Award for Excellence in Bowling Involvement was established to honor those ladies, like Ruth herself, who go above and beyond - not only for their local associations, but for their involvement in district, regional, state and/or national levels. We know your association has members, like Ruth, who volunteer their time, effort, energy and most of the time their money, to enrich the lives of fellow members. Why not honor them by nominating them for this prestigious award? Where would we all be without our hardworking and selfless volunteers? Nomination forms will be included with the August mailing from the Ohio USBC WBA and are available on our website: buckeyebowlingwriters.com Deadline for submitting applications is November 15 th. Please - submit your nomination for your worthy candidate! We know you have them - Lori Gillen August 2012 Ohio Hi-Lites Page 15
