Our aim is to make them the finest yet. With the generous support of the NSW League's major sponsor'qbe nsurance, teams representing the arrer, Riverina and Sydney leagues will converge on Canberra to take on the host league in the. knockout competition. After a recess in the early 1980's the Championships have grown in stature and popularity, and put on show the talented footballers involved throughout the state. We thank the NSW ootball League for the opportunity to take part. wish the ACTAL team every success and express my gratitude to the Coach, his Selectors, the two Managers and the trainers for their efforts. am sure the four Leagues will put on a good spectacle for the Canberra football public and expect this Championship to play its part in promoting Australian football in our region; Best of luck to every player and umpire and may the best team win.. Allan Hird President Message from the Chief Commissioner - NSW Australian ootball league Each year heralds a new beginning for Australian ootball and 1990 is no exception with the QBE NSW State Championships being played in Canberra for the first time. The ACT AL must be congratulated for their foresight in hosting these titles which can only assist in fostering our great game. All Leagues have put a tremendous amount of effort into the preparation of their sides giving each player the opportunity to display his talent in a highly competitive arena. Best wishes, to every team for a successful and injury free carnival. An event of this size cannot be staged without a lot of hard work from officials, coaches and umpires. President's Report This weekend sees us gathered in our National Capital for the New South Wales Championship in which the Riverina ootball League are the defending champions having been successful in the 1989 Championships at Broken Hill. These Championships over the last few years have provided the opportunity for players to represent their State plus the added opportunity to experience the comradeship that goes with our Australian game. To the New South Wales ootball League we thank them for seeing fit to include us in this series and hope your weekend ends up with some great competition and support that is required to keep our great game alive as a spectator sport. inally, to those teams competing this year we wish you all the best and may you approach your games with determination and sportsmanship that we know you all are capable of, and may the best League win. Eligibility for selection will be governed by normal registration requirements and disqualification restrictions. 22 players may be fielded per team in each match,.. 1s on"-field with four. interchange players. Teal Cup Sportsmen's Night The ACT Australian ootball Junior League's Sportsmen's Dinner in rud of the Teal Cup team funds for the Brisbane camiyal will be held on Monday night at 7pm at the Canberra Labour Oub. Guest speakers will be Melbourne football personality Peter "Crackers" Keenan, Essendon's Greg Anderson and Collingwood's Darren Millane. Tickets at $25 each include a thr~9urse dinner, and ~y~ ob~ed f!9j!l.th~ ACTAJL office at ootball Park or by phoning or 'arrer League Coach Russell Campbell, 30 years old, began his football with Ganmain in what was called the South West League (Riverina). n his last year with that Oub 1977 he kicked over 100 goals. He was recruited by and played with South Melbourne from , with Woodville (South Australia) in and then had his first stint as a coach with Coolamon in the Riverina ootball League, taking them to a Premiership after the first Grand-inal was drawn. Russell Campbell again coached Coolamon in 1984, coaclled Albury (Ovens & Murray League) in 1985 and Manuka Weston (ACTAL) from He 'had a break' in 1989 before accepting the job of Riverina Development Officer for the NSW Australian ootball League. 1' :jt ' ~

7 ,.. \ ACTL Coach Brian Quade, a member of the famous footballing Quade family from the Riverina, came to the ACT as Captain-coach of Manuka in He was an outstanding player, capping his playing career by winning the Jesaulenko Medal as best on the ground in the 1981 grand final. Brian coached Manuka for four years, taking the Bullants to their memorable 1981 flag, before transferring to Queanbeyan in He has steered the Tigers to five successive grand finals for three premierships to date. Except for one year, he has been coach of the representative team since 1982, leading the ACT to an undefeated victory in the 1985 osters Shield. During last year, he reached further milestones in his illustrious career when he ' coached the Tigers for the looth time, and made his 200th overall appearance as a coach in ACTAL football. Riverina ootball League Coach Les Parish held a r~gular place in the itzroy team before going to the Ovens and Murray League in Victoria. He is in his second year as coach of Griffith, and won the Riverina ootball League Best CJnd airest award in At 23, 180cm and 85kg he is playing coach of the Riverina League side for this year's Championships... Sydney League Coach Bill Brown, although small in stature, was one of the top rovers in the (then) VL as well as being one of the most popular figures with team-mates and opponents alike. He played over 150 games with Richmond, was a Tiger premiership team member, and represented Victoria on five occasions. After moving to Sydney, he was a successful coach with North Shore in the Sydney competition, and now has charge of the Sydney League representative team. Sydney Swans in Canberra? Press Reports this week have led to speculation that the Sydney Swans may consider a move to Canberra. ACTAL Officials will hold discussions with members of the Swans management when in Sydney on Tuesday next for the NSW v Victoria State of Origin clash at the SCG.

'. an Bloomfield - a classy wingman whose strength is in. his ball-:handling skills. He. recently played for Ainslie. i' arrer League.,.., Marc Hofert - Probably the team's m.ost versatile player, b~tis ~~cially good up forward. Has represented the Sydney L, Riverina L, and arrer L as well as. NSW.. Danny Malone - A rugged, determined running player who always polls well in the League Best and fairest. Has represented arrer.and NSW. Js curently secretary of the arrer L. : '.,. Mark Whyte - a young 'veteran' who first played with Ardlethan when only 14. Teal Cup rep. who played with Queanbeyan last year. i' ACTAL... Tony Wynd, ACT Captain, is captain of Queanbeyan. A Teal Cup and All - Australian rep. in 1983, he has been a regular ACT rep. sin~.:he has won wo Best and airest awards for the Tigers and played in their. ; and 1989 premiership sides. He was selected in the 1987 touring At.lstrarum "Galahs" side, but denied a trip through injury. Wynd is the only player in history to win three Mulrooney Medals. Michael Richardson, vice-captain- of the ACT side, is a strong ruckman 7with Ainslie and was a member of the 1987 premiership team. He is a regular ACT rep.,a featrue of his play is the ability to handle the heavy work in the packs throughout the game. Sydney Neil Brunton-DOB 3/1/69-Student Dashing. utility from Whyalla, SA who represented Swans at senior level. Currently a Holroyd Parramatta player featuring in the rejuvenation of this Oub. Rod Podbury- DOB 6/7 /63- Sales Rep..,..,. Triple Phelan Medallist with magical skills who pops up all over the ground. Previous State Representative and Sydney team member. Name: Age: Occu.pation: Hobbies: Achievements: UMPRES PROLES Andrew Malcolm 18 Apprentice Plumber Golf, Reading, TV, Umpiring 1989 Teal Cup AL Under 19s ACTAL U-19 Grand inal, 1989 This is Andrew's second season as a field umpire, having graduated from boundary umpiring. He is regarded as one of the ACT AL's promising young, umpires. ARRER Lee Barclay is a member of the Riverina Umpires Association. He is a young umpire with considerable experience. Lee has officiated in State Trials including Teal Cup and officiated in last year's State Championships as well as the arrer League Grand inal. Last year Lee travelled to Sydney to umpire a Swans U-19 game. Riverina Ken Wright has been a member of the Albury Umpires League for the past 10 years. Ken is a very experienced umpire who officiated in last year's State Championships and regularly officiates at Ovens and Murray senior games. Sydney Steve Arnott is a member of the NSW AL Umpires Association. This is Steve's first State Championship which follows on from his appointment to Sydney seniors finals last year.
