MORLEY CRICKET CLUB 5 YEAR DEVELOPMENT PLAN Summer 2017
CONTENTS MISSION STATEMENT Morley Cricket Club aims to make cricket accessible to the whole community. We aim to do this by: being the focus for cricket in our community providing coaching and practice facilities encouraging good sportsmanship and behaviour encouraging the personal growth of participants at all levels, both on and off the field. The development plan is a summary of all aspects of the Club, whether playing or otherwise, and also an idea how we wish it to develop over the next five years. For each section, we consider: 1. What we have now 2. What we need to do. 3. Requirements to achieve the objectives. 4. The cost. 5. When it will be implemented.
SECTIONS:- 1. Review of progress of Autumn 2015 development plan 2. Club Structure 3. Membership 4. Junior Section 5. Coaching 6. Fixtures 7. Equipment 8. Local community 9. Facilities 10. Summary
1. REVIEW OF PROGRESS ON THE 5 YEAR PLAN DEVELOPED AUTUMN 2015 In the autumn of 2015 we updated our 5 year development plan, which revised our initial 2012 plan. It is now time to review progress, remind ourselves of our achievements but also highlight where we still have items outstanding that will roll in to our new plan. What have we delivered? On the facilities side ECB grant funding, Jewson s Cricket Force support and the introduction of the Over the Wicket fund has allowed us, along with our own fundraising efforts to take big steps forward on and off the pitch. To remind ourselves between 2012 and 2015: Covers for the mobile covers A new portable practice net Installation of an Artificial Wicket New boiler for the Showers Senior & Junior bowling machines A new outfield mower A new boundary marker Repaired benches New picnic benches A new training equipment cupboard We have more qualified coaches although this hasn t been entirely satisfactory as we have seen limited medium term benefits. 3 Level 2 equivalent coaches invested in but 2 now not involved. If we are to invest in the future we need an agreement that commits coaches to take on coaching roles for a minimum of 2 years post qualification. We also have more scorers but this now needs further investment to educate the next breed and get them involved. We have significantly increased our involvement with the local community via cricket events but also the hugely successful annual music and beer festivals. Further enhanced local community profile via active website, use of social media and local press coverage. We have increased slightly our Senior membership, assisted by the 3 rd XI establishment but have seen junior numbers drop. Of particular concern are the u15 and u17 age groups. For the first time in a number of years we did not have an u15 age group in 2015 although this was re-established in 2016 and 2017 with no under 17s in The older age groups are a concern across the country and clubs need to work with their juniors to maintain their interest and develop cricketing options which will allow this.
What have we not delivered on? There are a number of key areas where we haven t yet developed as we d hoped. This is putting a strain on existing volunteers and needs to be a key area of focus over the next 2 years. For example, A development officer a volunteer who can contact and work with local schools to encourage more primary school kids to join the club. A resurrected junior committee and/or a Junior Co-ordinator to manage the junior section fixtures, teams, training nights and events More involvement with local schools An additional match ground for 3 rd X1 cricket a big blow losing Morley Academy and hopefully we can build bridges over the next couple of years. Sufficient juniors for all age groups we now have reduced junior membership (50 down from 70) Recruiting girls and more juniors from non-white ethnic backgrounds Reduced number of juniors in representative teams
2. CLUB STRUCTURE 2.1 What we have now We are affiliated to the England and Wales Cricket Board through Yorkshire County Cricket Club. We are members of the JCT600 Bradford Cricket League, Dales Council Cricket League and The Bradford Junior Cricket League, The Leeds Junior Cricket League, The Heavy Woollen Junior Cricket League and the Last Man Stands competition. We run several teams. The 1 st XI and 2 nd XI Saturday sides play in the JCT600 Bradford Cricket League. The 3 rd X1 are in the Dales Council Cricket League. Our junior teams play in The Bradford Junior Cricket League, The Leeds Junior Cricket League and The Heavy Woollen Junior Cricket League. The Club is open to all and our membership policy states that we are open to all persons, irrespective of ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion or beliefs, sex, age and ability. We have links with other sporting Groups based at the club, a junior football team LS27 FC, a junior rugby league team LS27 Spartans and Bradford Ladies cricket team. Morley Cricket Club is run by a main Club Committee, with a Cricket Section sub-committee and this development plan is focused on the work and plans of the cricket section. The sub-committee deals with all aspects of running the cricket section, from financial to the upkeep of the ground and playing membership. The Club has a qualified Club Welfare Officer, who has attended a Sports Coach UK Good Practice and Child Protection Course, in accordance with ECB rules. The Club has adopted the Safe Hands Welfare of Young People in Cricket policies. The club has a number of ECB qualified coaches or assistant coaches. We have 3 scorers capable of scoring on the laptop software and 3 or 4 other scorers who help on 2 nd and 3 rd XI match days.
2.2 What we would like to have. More coaches and scorers; A Head Coach A resurrected junior committee More involvement with local schools 2.3 What do we need to do Develop links with local schools Continue to ensure that the website has all match results, including junior games, on a weekly basis and to publicise the club via the local press. Review progression of the 5-year Action Plan on a 12 monthly basis. 2.4 What is the cost? For the most part the financial cost is minimal assuming that Club members and their parents can be encouraged to become involved in the development of the club. Recruitment of new coaches will mean expenditure invested in Level 2 equivalent coaching courses and coach support workers courses. Funding to be from club reserves or via local grant options. 2.5 In place by A Head Coach to be in place for the 2018 season. We attempted to contact local primary schools 2/3 years ago with limited response. Through an aforementioned head coach / coaching coordinator, we would like to build formal ties to encourage a partnership both parties can benefit from. We now have a link via PE Partners UK with 4 (soon to be 5) local primary schools and also have re-established a relationship with the Morley Academy by providing coaching facilities for out of school training for year7 and 8 pupils. Until the role is in place the cricket sub-committee as a whole will take responsibility for developing these links. Post recruitment we wish to have links with 5 primary schools by the end of 2018 and 1 High school.
3 MEMBERSHIPS 3.1 What we have now 35 adult playing members 10 older juniors (15+) capable of playing in 1 st or 2 nd X1 games 40 younger juniors (up to under 13) 10 ECB qualified coaches (5 level 2,5 level 1) 8 First Aiders 4 junior umpires 3 to 5 senior scorers 1 grounds man with a volunteer assistant 3.2 What we would like to have An increase in adult membership through attracting players and retention of juniors as they mature to allow us to continue to play 3 senior teams under the Morley CC name. Sufficient juniors at all age groups (u9 u15) to enable continuous development into the club s senior teams and meet the criteria for Premier League status. A Last Man Stands Social league side maintained to retain juniors in particular in the u16 to u21 age band. More and more highly qualified coaches across a mix of ages. More scorers, enough to cover all matches. 3.3 What we need to do Advertise for scorers on the Club s website and in the local press. Run a scoring course prior to the start of the 2018 season Increase junior membership by developing links with primary schools. Continually improve facilities for both playing and non-playing members to ensure retention of recruitment of juniors. Encourage members approaching retirement from the game to maintain active involvement through umpiring, scoring or coaching. Identify and train willing volunteers from within the juniors parents to undertake coaching and other responsible roles.
3.4 What is the cost? The cost per course for coaches is 295 for Level 2 equivalents and 100 for Coach Support workers courses. Umpire and Scorers courses are 75. Local grant funding to be applied for if club funds / playing subscriptions not sufficient to fund. Taking observations from previous courses we are now requesting half of the cost is paid by the student with half being funded by the club in lieu of a commitment to coach juniors for a minimum of 2 years. Club facility improvements need to be funded in the main from the Over the Wicket ( OTW) development fund and from profits on our successful community events. The OTW is funded by fund member contributions of 10 per month. There is a 50 monthly prize draw but profits from the 20 or so members are all directed towards improving off field facilities. Other actions demand time input from members. 3.5 In place by 2 extra Level 2 coaches to be in place by the start of the 2018 season 4 extra Coach Support Workers to be in place by the start of the 2018 season.
4 JUNIORS SECTION 4.1 What we have now We have a junior section with 45 boys and 2 girls. At present, we have teams at U9, U11, U13 and U15 levels. A primarily White, English ethnicity collection of juniors but encouragingly increase numbers at the younger end from players with an Asian background. CRB registered age group coaches who take summer coaching sessions on Friday evenings (not all have official cricket coaching qualifications) 5 /7 juniors selected for representative honours in Indoor winter nets training from January through to March The u15 team plays in the Bradford Junior Cricket League. This is only possible by borrowing 3/4 players from neighbours East Ardsley The u13 team competes in the Leeds Junior Cricket League and this is only possible by borrowing 3 or 4 players from other clubs and promoting our more able u11 players. The u11 teams compete in the Heavy Woollen Junior Cricket League and Leeds Junior Cricket League The u9 team competes in the Heavy Woollen Junior Cricket League. A 2 bay artificial net practice facility. A roll on practice net A junior bowling machine 4.2 What we would like to have Expansion in the numbers of juniors More and better qualified ECB coaches. More parental involvement. Links with primary schools in the area. Junior sides competing in all age groups from u9 to u15 Recruit more girls into the junior sections Recognition of juniors in representative teams A Development programme for our most promising juniors during the winter months
4.3 What we need to do Action all points in 4.2. Actively advertise for new recruits as outlined above. Ensure that we nominate juniors for representative teams 4.4 The cost Investment in winter development programmes estimated 50 per week for 6 weeks (funded to a degree from weekly player subscriptions) Other Costs are minimal other than that of coaching as previously stated. 4.5 In place by Coaching plans have been highlighted above. Increased female and non-white players ongoing. Aim to have increased numbers for the start of the 2019 season. Target by the end of 2019, to have a regular girl membership of between 5 to 8 girls. Currently the junior section has 9 Asian-Indian playing members, with no afro Caribbean players. By 2019, we aim to have increased the numbers of Asian and Afro- Caribbean origin in our junior section to between 12 and 15.
5 Coaching 5.1 What we have now We have the following qualified coaches: Richard Jubb (L2) Simon Barraclough (L2) Herbie Jassi (L2) Phil French (L2) Sangeeth Cooray (L2) overseas professional Ryan Dowse (L1) Matthew Dowse (L1) Dave Nebard (L1) Matthew Fox (L1) We have sufficient stumps, bails, balls, bats, pads and helmets for coaching practices. 2 bay practice nets and roll on training net. Senior bowling machine Junior bowling machine 5.2 What we would like to have More and progressively higher qualified coaches with a high level of commitment. At least one new coach is to be identified and trained each year and/or existing coaches encouraged to progress to higher qualification. An informal contract to be produced to get buy in and commitment for any future coach investment. 5.3 What do we need to do Encourage suitable parents and senior juniors to become involved and to take courses. Find the funding to cover the costs of the courses. Put in place a formal agreement with a coaching provider for winter development sessions Review annually. 5.4 What is the cost 280 = Level 2 coaching course 100 = Coach Support workers course
300 for winter development sessions 5.5 In place by Coaches Level 2 (2 by end of 2018 and a further 2 in 2019), Coach Support workers (4 by the end of 2018 and a further 2 in 2019)
6 Fixtures 6.1 Where are we now We have three Saturday teams (1 st XI and 2 nd XI) in the JCT600 Bradford Cricket League and 3 rd XI in the Dales Council Cricket League. 3 rd XI matches are used as a springboard for junior development. Under 15 s, 13s, 11s and under 9s play in local leagues. Pitch hire for corporate teams occasionally and other cricket clubs Occasional Representative matches Currently over 60 matches per season on the square. Artifical pitch installed in 2014 via ECB Last Man Stands initiative 6.2 Where we would like to be We will continue to strive to provide cricket for all club members in conjunction with their ability and development. Retention of juniors in the u15 age group and also in the age groups where players drift away from the game. Increasing numbers watching and participating in Last Man Stands mid-week games Widen the interest of cricket to other members of the community. Encourage the public to watch the many fixtures that our teams are involved in. 6.3 What we need to do Consider how to attract extra people to come and watch senior cricket at Morley CC. 6.4 What is the cost Limited Costs, maybe advertising and marketing costs of c In place by By end of 2018 we need to have a junior age group plan to forecast numbers 5 years in to the future to ensure coverage at all age groups
