This book began as a graduate school dissertation, and I would be neglecting the heart and soul of the work if I did not thank the faculty, staff, and fellow students of the history department at the University of Wisconsin Madison. I am particularly grateful to Professor Johann Sommerville. He was my guide and my mentor throughout graduate school and without his assistance this project would never have begun, much less ever reached completion. I am thankful that I was lucky enough to work under the guidance of a group of wonderful scholars for the duration of my time in Madison.
