1 The Quiver May 13, Section Officers PETER CAPP SECTION CHIEF (Left to Right) Roderick McDaniel, Peter Capp, Patrick Homan RODERICK MCDANIEL SECTION SECRETARY Roderick McDaniel is a Life Scout from Troop 28. He attends McGavock High School in Nashville, TN. While in the Order of the Arrow Roderick has served as Chapter Chief, Ceremonies Chairman, Section Website Chairman and is now serving as Section Secretary. He plans to improve communication and website promotion. PATRICK HOMAN SECTION VICE - CHIEF My name is Patrick James Homan. I am 19 years old. My hometown of Shannon is a small place with a population of 1800 people. The community is very close knit; everyone knows everyone. I have been a volunteer fire fighter in my community for 3 years and was elected a Lieutenant. Just this year, I was a Captain on my high school football and baseball teams. Continues on page 4. Peter Capp is an Eagle Scout from Troop 221. He attends University School of Nashville in Nashville, TN. While in the Order of the Arrow Peter has served as Lodge Treasurer, Lodge Vice Chief, and Lodge Chief of Wa-hi-nasa Lodge, and as Section Vice Chief. Peter hopes to be able to use his experience in the Order of the Arrow to help put on fun Conclaves that have something that everyone will enjoy. The purpose of the Section is to serve the lodges; and as your Section Chief, Peter will to do everything he can to help strengthen our lodges even more, and have fun in the process. 2 LEAVE IT ALL Dear SR-6N, BEHIND I had a rather awkward feeling leaving the Council Ring the Sunday morning of Conclave. It was finished; my two years of Chief were over; the program at my event was completed; the offices and responsibilities were passed on. I believe it was a mixture of relief and one of missing the duties I had carried for so long. For the first time in a long time I was freed of any real responsibility. I had nowhere else to be, no one else to see, and nothing else to do other than head home. This weekend I was given a lot of glory and honor that was most certainly not mine to receive. Our service lodge and the program lodges put in countless hours for this event, to which my efforts can t compare. A huge thanks goes out to the brothers of Chicksa Lodge who helped make everything possible. I wish I could personally meet and thank each of you for your unselfish service. At the show I spoke about our theme, I ain t nothin but an Arrowman, and how it is just plain wrong. Few people I know truly understand my love and commitment to scouting. They can t understand why I am willing to sacrifice so much for it. I would consider many of these people my friends, and if I am nothing but an Arrowman then they do not now, nor will they ever understand anything about me. So I must conclude that we are more than just Arrowmen. We are brothers, fathers, mothers, co-workers, volunteers, husbands, wives, students, bosses, church members, and many more things. All our experiences in these fields make us better scouts, because they give us skills to serve the scouting movement. More importantly though, being an Arrowman makes us better at all these things we do. We understand brotherhood, cheerfulness, and service. Each of us knows the value of teamwork and volunteering. We all remember the admonition and use it for guidance on our journey. We are more than just Arrowmen, but we are still always Arrowmen, and our lives should reflect this fact. The past two years have been wonderful serving as the Chief, but it s time to pass the torch. I wish our new officers the best and they know I will be here for them through it all, should they have need. I have learned and grown more than most will in a lifetime from my experiences. I have made friends from across our Section and from all across America. My brothers, I thank you for all your trust and support and I will do my best to continue to live up to the honors you have bestowed upon me. Yours in Continued Service, Jarrod A. A wise person learns from the experience of others." (Otto von Bismarck, German Chancellor, ) There are few roles in existence in the Boy Scouts of America, from Tiger Cubs to Venturing that could possibly compare to the amount of stress and pressure produced by being an officer in the Order of the Arrow. The utmost goal of Scouting is not to teach young men how to weave baskets or how to shoot rifles, but to make them self-sufficient, contributing, strong members of American Society. Only through real-world application can an individual truly learn or understand even the simplest concepts. When I was first elected as Section Secretary I was very green, having only served previously as Lodge Secretary for four months. So while I felt comfortable with the Order of the Arrow, I was completely swamped by being an officer in the OA. Fortunately, I was taught by very skilled and talented young leaders and wise and persistent advisers. For me being the Section Secretary was a learning experience, a learning experience that made more of a man out of me. I would like to take the chance to extend my special thanks to Jarrod Hunt, Patrick Homan, Don Lee, Jim Dilley, Randy Stephens, and David Miller. Forever will I be in their debt for their assistance and their guidance, but by far the largest gift they have given me is one more step into manhood Michael Edward Fitzgerald Past 6N Secretary ABOUT THE QUIVER This is the first edition of the The Quiver in The Section 6N Newsletter is for lodge leadership. 4 ADVISER S MINUTE The opening of the song of the Order frequently rings in my ear; Firm bound in Brotherhood... I hear these words as spirited words coming from a spirited song, in spite of our song often being sung as a dirge. I certainly felt that way at the Conclave at Camp Yocona. Looking around the council ring, I sensed that those in attendance felt the same way. The bond of brotherhood is crucial to the idea of being able to provide cheerful service. Through cheerful service, the Brotherhood gives us purpose and satisfaction in all that we do. When surrounded by Arrowmen cheerfully providing service to each other, as well as the local community, the significance of the Order of the Arrow is made all the more clear. The efforts in organizing and promoting the Conclave by all of the Lodges brought a great deal of energy and excitement to the Conclave. The efforts in preparing for and hosting the Conclave by the Host Lodge were extraordinary. The efforts in conducting the many activities at the Conclave by Arrowmen from across the Section throughout the entire event were inspiring to all. Add to all of this great weather and outstanding food and there is little doubt in my mind why there was a sense of Firm bound in Brotherhood... May the memories from this past Conclave remain fresh in our minds, both individually and collectively, as we return to our respective Lodges, Chapters and Troops. With a sustained spirit of Brotherhood, we can look forward to a great Conclave next year with Ahoalan-Nachpikin as the Host Lodge, and a great year for each Lodge in the Section. I now attend Ittawamba Community College and I am majoring in Civil Engineering. I am a two-term lodge chief for Chicksa lodge. The Order of the Arrow has become a large part of my life in the last few years. I have attended two NOAC s, 5 Conclaves and Philmont. I am the crew leader for Crew 2 in Shannon, MS. I am an Eagle Scout. My troop only consisted of eight boys and my crew has never had any more than 14 members. In my term as Section Vice Chief I hope to accomplish many goals. I am looking forward to working with all the lodges next year to make the Conclave program better for everyone. I also would like everyone to be aware of what the section does besides Conclave during the rest of the year.
