Sincerely, Pat Sleeper; CAF, President Fishout at Picachos, Mexico Don & Pat s Picachos story 2/4/2017 Pat and I just returned from Angler s Inn on Lake Picachos, Mexico. Twenty (20) local Fly fishermen and women caught and released over 3000 Black Bass in four days of fishing. Our arms and backs are sore; all this with only one broken fly rod. The fish ranged between 1lb and 7lbs. We used poppers, small (size 4) bead headed wooly buggers and small clousers. The majority of our fish were caught subsurface using intermediate lines. For several years, we ve enjoyed traveling to Picachos, Mexico to fish for the allusive trophy bass or, to accomplish the 100+ bass per day fishing using poppers and subsurface flies. Regardless, the enjoyment is always over the top!!! Then if that isn t enough enjoyment we have Jobani, the chef!!! WOW!!! We all came to the conclusion while there: he needs to come to our town! Day one was barbeque ribs family style; day two was Mexican food; day three was lobster plated with Dorado, shrimp fixed three ways family style and before all the meals are Hors d oeuvre and after these meals comes desert!!! Would you believe my husband gained 10lbs in 6 days? Daily we are awakened with a smiling face knocking at our door handing us our cup of coffee fixed just the way we like it!!! While waking up, we stagger down to the beautiful large open air dining room, while geckos cheer us on, to have our breakfast. We have an array of choices: fresh fruit, juice, country style potatoes, omelet, pancakes, bacon and sausage, also tortillas and toast. I then tend

2 to gaze off into the dark that is shadowing the lake. The stars are brilliant and the air crisp with the only thought on one s mind is the dream of what encounter will I have out there today? Will it be a trophy bass, will I see any special animals crossing the bay like the large iguana I saw yesterday or a deer like my friend saw yesterday? Every day is a new experience, like living a national Geographic movie! Day two was a cloudy day like most of the days we had; warm but not too warm. I cast out into a group of dead standing trees when my line whipped over a limb located WAY up into the tree. I thought, oh no! I could see my popper was just touching the water surface; so, I decided to whip a little more line over the top of this dead limb. Being bold, I started calling here fishy fishy; here fishy fishy. When all of a sudden a good sized fish jumped up and took it! The branch broke with a large snapping crunch and down fell my line! By then we were all laughing so hard; I couldn t believe the fish hung around long enough for me to land him! Just one of those crazy fun days! : ) Day three was one of those days you dream about...there was the usual overcast over the sky with more wind whipping through the dead trees and brush. It was difficult to find a location where we could more easily cast without landing in a shrub or tree. But, finally we found that special bay. We quietly sat there at the opening of the bay hearing the echo of fish splashing in the distance. Slowly we motored in; watching for the feeding bass; veering around this tree and that one until we got in far enough in to see them. Don launched the first cast; fish on I heard. I couldn t cast yet as I was dodging tree limbs. It s a big one I heard as he nervously fought this powerhouse of a bass. Finally we see it; it s a nice bass of 4.5lbs. What a fun fight and nice bass! We ended up landing about 187 between the two of us that day, it was just one of those days! Angler s Inn International owned by Billy Chapman provides the most outstanding service of any lodge we have ever fished!!! Don Sleeper Frank Spitari Pat Sleeper Steve Bohnemeyer Mark Adams

5 Fly of the Month for March 2017 Coachman Clacka Caddis Fly of the Month, March 2017 By: Ray Narbaitz Necessity, it is often said, is the Mother of invention. I ve heard the same saying using the words crisis, need or curiosity in place of necessity. Whatever word you use, the meaning is pretty much the same. Somebody needed something and didn t have the tools or objects to take care of the need, so they came up with their own. That is what happened to Walter Wiese at Park s Fly Shop in Gardiner, MT in The Coachman Trude had been the shop s go to attractor pattern for a long time. In 09 there was a mess up in their order for a large number of the flies, and they didn t have nearly enough to take care of what they knew the demand would be for the year. Wiese needed to come up with a fly that was fairly easy and quick to tie, and would fill the bill for a good attractor pattern. To do so, he married parts of two of his favorite flies, the Coachman Trude and Craig Mathews Iris Caddis. The Abdomen, Thorax and Hackle are based on the Coachman and the Wing and Shuck (tail) are from the iris Caddis. From then to now, it has all but replaced the Coachman Trude in their shop. Hook: Dry Fly Hook of your choice, 12 to 16 Thread: 8/0, Brown or Black Tail: Amber Zlon Abdomen: Peacock Herl Wing: Loop of white Zlon or Polypro Thorax: Calls for Chocolate Brown Ice Dub. I use Brown Superfine or Peacock Black Ice Dub Hackle: Brown, trimmed on the bottom 1. Debarb the hook and place it in the vise. 2. Lay a good thread base the full length of the hook. 3. Tie in a sparse amount of the Zlon for the tail. Make it a little shorter than the shank of the hook. 4. Tie in your Peacock. I like to wrap it around the thread a few times, and then hold both the Herl and Thread as I wrap it forward. It helps strengthen the Herl. Wrap it up to just short of the 2/3 point of the shank. 5. Take a single strand of the wing material (less on the smaller sizes) and form a loop. Lay the ends of the wing material on the top of the thread wraps in front of the Thorax, and tie them in with a couple of tight wraps right up against the Herl. Make the wing extend to just past the bend of the hook. Trim off any excess so the ends are just short of the hook eye. Wiese suggests that you put some Super Glue on the ends at this point, before you fully tie them down, so they won t pull out. I have never done this, and find that wrapping in the material tightly to the hook eye seems to do the job. Your choice. 6. Tie in your Hackle up against the Herl. 7. Dub in your Thorax, making it a little fatter than the Abdomen. Dub it to just short of the eye. 8. Wrap your Hackle forward over the Thorax. Tie it off and trim the excess. 9. Wrap a small thread head, whip finish, and trim off your thread. 10.Trim off the bottom of the Hackle so it is about half the length of the Hackle on top. Notes: I remember well the first time I used this fly. A couple of years ago, Ed Bruno and I went up to fish the North Fork of the Yuba. It was the only fly I used, and the fish ate it the whole time. It is now one of my top two or three favorite Attractor Flies I ve often thought it might be fun to tie the Hackle in Hackle Stack style instead of trimming it off the bottom. I haven t been ambitious enough to do it yet The Royal Coachman Trude was the Fly of the Month clear back in It is the same as the Coachman, with the red band added in the middle of the Abdomen. CAF General Meeting Speaker List CAF meets 10 months out of the year and presents a variety of exciting fly fishing-related programs throughout the year.
