1 THAMES HIGH SCHOOL Principal s Message Dave Sim is currently on leave and returning for the start of Term 3. Sue Baker is standing in as Acting Principal, during Mr Sim s absence. Property Updates: A Block - The deck and entrance into A Block (Science area) is all but completed. The area will be open for use very shortly (hopefully next week). This will give students a very large covered area of outdoor seating and easier and safer access to A Block. New Whare After a slow start due to geotechnical issues, the building project is back on track. The foundation concrete will be poured early next week. As part of the process, stones from the local area are to be buried under the 4 corners of the building and under the central pole (pou). This will be happening on Monday (4 th July) at 6.00am. Anyone is welcome to come along to this ceremony. Coming Up.. Friday 1 July TV Golf Wednesday 6 July Yr 13 Dress-Up Day Wednesday 6 July International Food Festival, 1.10 to 1.50pm in Hall Thursday 7 July Senior Class Parent-Teacher Interviews 3.00 to 8.00pm Friday 8 July Catch-Up Day for selected students and last day of Term 2 Monday 25 July Start of Term 3 The school calendar is now available online through the parent portal and THS App. CATCH UP DAY FRIDAY 8 JULY (last day of Term 2) This day is a great opportunity for students to either catch up on work not completed and/or to attend extra tutorials with teachers as required. Selected students are required to attend to specifically catch up on work not completed. Letters have been ed or posted to these students detailing the classes they must attend, a roll will be taken for those required to attend and school buses will be running as normal. The students are NOT required to be in school uniform, and school will start at 8.45am as usual. Please support the school by ensuring that your child attends this day, especially if you have received a letter requesting this.

2 Senior Reports and Senior Class Parent-Teacher Interviews The senior student reports are now available on the Parent Portal for viewing. Students were also given a printed copy this week, to take home to parents/caregivers. Login details for the Parent Portal have also been provided again (either ed or posted). Senior class parent-teacher interviews will be held on Thursday 7 th July from 3.00 to 8.00pm. There will be a dinner break for teachers between 5.30 to 6.30 pm. Normal classes for ALL students will finish at 1.00pm (end of period 2) on this day and students should then return home. The Tairua/Pauanui and Thames Coast buses will leave at the earlier time of 1.15pm. Other buses will leave at the normal time of 3.25pm (Coromandel bus a little later). Interviews can be booked online by going to and entering the code gy39d. You can also make bookings by ringing the school office on Maps will be available on arrival (outside the library), to assist with locating classrooms. It is very useful if parents/caregivers and students attend the interviews. Interviews are for 5 minutes only with each teacher. If you require further time, please organise another time to meet with the teacher. We would ask that you respect this time limit, as other families may be also waiting to see the teacher. If you have any questions regarding the reports or interview process, please contact the school office. International Department News On Monday 4th July we will have a Flag Ceremony at the full school assembly, where participating students will march in with their country s flag and give a brief outline of the food they will have for sale on Wednesday (6 July) at the International Food Festival. This year the highly anticipated International Food Festival will be held on Wednesday 6 July at 1.10pm in the school hall. It s a chance to celebrate diversity and culture in our school. Our students prepare food from all around the world and will have it for sale. Some of the countries represented are Tonga, Vietnam, Mexico, Italy and Greece. Parents/caregivers and whanau are welcome to come along and enjoy the festival. ARE YOU ABLE TO HELP!! We have two International tour groups arriving at the beginning of Term 3 and are urgently looking for short term homestays for these students. The first group is from Taiwan and will be in Thames from Saturday 23 July to 4 August. The second group are our regular visitors from Misaki in Japan and they will be here from 31 July to 8 August. The winning Kahoot s will be used to help teach our new Year 9 students to the school about the values that we stand by in our positive learning programme.

Kalem Knight was also a winner, but absent at the prizegiving. Well done to all the participants in this competition and to the winners. We have also been running a Uniform Competition and the winner is Jackson Hare (pictured right). In the recent uniform raffle competition Jackson won the prize of $50. During the previous three weeks students were given a raffle ticket if they were in complete and correct school uniform. Jackson shows how good the uniform looks when worn with pride by self and school. Well done Jackson! A reminder about the footwear that is allowed to be worn: Boys: Black LEATHER lace ups and School socks. NO short black socks allowed. Girls: Black LEATHER lace ups' or may wear single strap Mary-Jane style shoes. NO HIGH-TOP or CANVAS shoes allowed. WHITE socks or BLACK stockings. An explanation does not necessarily mean your child can wear the footwear they come to school in. i.e. multicoloured sports shoes; socks with jandals/sandals. There are shoes available in stock we will loan out to students. 3

4 Sports News Gymsports Congratulations to Barnaby Bruce, Michael de Laborde, Larissa Deverill, Anita Fraei, Wil Johnston, Hamish Steadman and Rosie Thompson who won the School Spirit Award at this year s Waikato Secondary Schools Gymsport Championships. This award is for demonstrating sportsmanship through fair play and admirable conduct and students demonstrating enthusiasm and being united for their school. Well done team! NZSS Cross Country Recently the NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country was held at the Aerodrome in Rotorua. Danielle Goodall was our only competitor and she finished 50th in the Senior Girls Secondary Schools 4km race. Danielle was also a member of the Waikato/BOP Relay team that ran a 5 x 2km race; her team finished 4th overall. We also wish Danielle and her brother Matthew well, as they have both left for the World Orienteering Champs as part of the New Zealand Team. Danielle is writing a blog this year to keep us updated: the link is Waiuku Sports Exchange Thank you to all that were involved in our Waiuku Sports Exchange held last week at Waiuku College. Overall we won 4 games, but with two other games only decided in the last minutes of play it was an exciting time watching! 5 Rugby Congratulations to Mitchell Murphy who has been selected to attend the 2016 Chiefs U18's Development Camp at St Peter's College for a week during the upcoming holidays. Well done Mitchell and we look forward to you passing on any tips on your return. The 1st XV had a great game on Saturday 18th June playing Mercury Bay at home. Within the first minutes of the game we had a try and it carried on throughout the game, THS scoring 11 tries to 0. The end result was a 68-3 win to us. Tries were scored by Isaac Fisher x 2; Sireli Knox x 2; Mitchell Murphy x 2; Bray Ward, Keenan Alexander, Dylan Cameron, Taylor Donald and Wien Binedell. Jesse Goodwin kicked 5 conversions and one penalty. The boys had another great win at Waiuku. Our first try was scored again within minutes of the game starting and the end result was a 22-7 win to us. Tries were scored by Sireli Knox x 2 and Blair Millar. Jesse Goodwin kicked two conversions and one penalty. Wet and windy weather made for slippery conditions for the Saturday 25 th June game. Half time score was 5-3 to the boys. Second half we scored two more tries and a conversion, winning the game Tries were scored by Mitchell Murphy, Sireli Knox and Isaac Fisher. Jesse Goodwin kicked one conversion. Our 4th grade rugby team has started their 2nd round with two great wins, upsetting Mercury Bay with 5 tries scored by Clark Veal, Dalton Broughton, Denzel Waite, Ethan McDonald and Rapi Reidy on the 18th June. Last Saturday they had a big win against Central Coast with tries scored by Callum Wenzlick, Dalton Broughton x 2, Jayden Edwards, Dayna Sands-Gage, Luke Chambers x 2, Clark Veal and Damian McKee. Well done to Jayden who also kicked 8 out of 9 conversions. Hockey Congratulations to our boys hockey team who made the TV Secondary Schools Hockey finals last week; unfortunately they went down to Te Aroha College in a very tight and hard fought game. Netball Our 9A netball girls have had big wins in their Wednesday night competition games recently, but went down to Paeroa 9A in their TV league game. Unfortunately due to a new format in this league our 10A and 9A netball teams played each other in the semi-finals on Saturday 25th. Well done to both teams who had a close encounter with 9A keeping the score close up to half time, 10A won Our 10A and 9A netball teams are playing their finals this Saturday, both against Paeroa teams at the Thames Netball court and would love your support. Game times are: 10A start at 10am and 9A start at 11am. 5

Football Results for games on the 18th June: Our senior girls football team won 2-1 against Otorohanga. The player of the day was Kate Sayer who is going from strength to strength as goalie.

Otorohanga picked Georgia Hinds-Haye as their player of the day. Great game by our junior girls team against Waikato Diocesan, but unfortunately a 3-0 loss. Congratulations to Monika Hammond for the week s Achievement Award for her improvement in skills and jockeying her opponents something that Coach Andy has been focusing on in practice. Also congratulations to Nyah Railey for Player of the Day. Our senior boys had a 3-all draw against Hamilton High School Grey Team and our junior boys lost 1-0 in their game against Fraser High School. On the 25th June, 3 of our teams managed to play their games away (after a bit of re-shuffling due to the grounds condition). The junior boys won against Matamata College Junior boys 3-2, they all played a great game especially in the rain, goals scored by Ryan Danby, Joseph Esguerra and Adam McCullough.

7 Coromandel Regional Scholastics Surfing Event 1 Congratulations to Vita Rowe-Smith who was our only competitor in the Coromandel Scholastics Surfing Competition held in Whangamata on Sunday. Vita finished 2nd in the Girls U14 event. What a fantastic result! The next event in this series of three is on the 24th July (back up 31st July) at Hot Water Beach or Whangapoua.
