Lucan Sarsfields Camogie Newsletter Vol 2 June Field of Dreams. Season 2012 has been an interesting one so far, with a record participation of Camogie within Lucan Sarsfields. For the first time ever, we fielded 4 adult teams, and each one is having a great season so far. Bill Ryan's team play in senior 7 and we have a team profile page on them featured in this edition. Mick Roche and his crew, are proving the fight to gain Senior 1 status was worthwhile as top 4 is now achieved, while senior 3 and 5 teams will also be in the top 4 playoffs. On the juvenile front, congratulations to the new management team, Donal Casey, Dominic Conroy and Marian Flynn on continuing the great run of U15 titles by wrapping up Lucan's first league title of With our U16,U14 and U13 all still in contention for league honours, it promises to be a thrilling end to season when league resumes in September. Lucan Sarsfields Camogie- Div 1 Feile Team 2012

Congratulation to our U14 team, on reaching the Dublin Feile final, Lucan 5th final in 5 years. This team will go far, as they kept their nerve in a close semi final, with the winning goal coming 8 minutes into injury time. Congratulations also to our U14 community games squad, who were crowned Dublin champions for the 6 th time in row. Onwards to Leinster where the same squad hope to complete a 3 in row on July 7th Great work being done by Patricia Byrne, Declan O Leary and Richie Kavanagh in the academy every week with 30 girls learning the skills of the game, making new friends and having fun. Our latest team to play Go Games is our U8 squad who are going great guns led by Ollie Mahon, Gary Hollowed and Alan Mooney. Congratualations to St Joseph s who reached their 1 st Division 1 Dublin final recently. Lucan Sarsfields U8 Camogie Team It seems an age ago now, but back in February our U11 team made the annual trip to play in the U12 tournament in Gormanstown. Tons of goals were scored over 5 Sundays with many highs. In May, We had the visit of The Camogie President of Ireland to Lucan Sarsfields and also to Scoil Mhuire GNS. A new hurling yard game was also introduced with great success to Scoil Mhuire GNS. Looking forward we have 5 squads eagerly waiting to play in Round Towers summer festival of Camogie on every Saturday in July in Corcagh Park. Finally, Lucan Sarsfields will play host to Tipperary champions in National Feile on July 5th, followed

by Kilkenny champions and Naomh Jude on the Friday 6th July. Please come and support our girls who have put in an extreme effort all year in the quest for All Ireland glory. A big crowd always makes a great occasion. We also need volunteers for these two days, so if you have a free hour or two either day, we would love to hear from you. Contact Helen or Garry Many hands make light work. Family Fun sponsored Cycle This year, following last years success cycle, we will be holding the second annual sponsored cycle with the hope that everyone with a bicycle will join us on an amble down the canal from 12 th Lock and back. The date is the Saturday June 30th with a time to be announced. I would like to thank Staggs Cycles from Lucan Village who are sponsoring this event, and will be on hand on the day, to assist with any bike difficulties, punctures etc. More to follow. New Referees We would like to congratulate our latest group of girls who took the recent referee level one First Whistle course and are now qualified to referee home Go Games from U8 to U10 and away games up to U12. Well done to Amber O'Connor, Aoife Greene, Charlotte Rooney, Cisca Devereux, Jenny Ryan, Maeve Ward, Orla Beagan, Niamh Power, Fiona Dowler, Stephanie Reilly, Megan Irwin,Jenny Kavanagh, Aoife Clancy,Anne Marie Courtney, Laura Morrissey, Niamh Byrne, Aoife Flynn, Rachel Leonard and Hannah Moran. 4 Caroline McKeown Cup Final 2012 Scoil Mhuire GNS 6-3 Lucan AS 2-3 This was a great night for a tremendous Scoil Mhuire GNS side. Led by brave captain Tara O Connor they ran out deserving winners after a great struggle. Indeed with ten minutes to go their lead had been reduced to three points by the battling All stars but late goals by Laura Morgan and Lucy Fleming settled the issue. The Lucan All Stars team had fantastic hurlers all over the pitch. Heather Kenny played the game of her life. Laura Boland and Ciara Slattery gave staunch support to the marvellous Rhiannon Withero in defence. Jessica McClelland had a stormer in goal in the first half and again in midfield after the break. Fiona Daly and Aoife Mahon never gave an inch around the middle while Karla Davila Kenny and Anisa Khan showed how much they have improved over the winter months. Up front Eimear Kennedy and Lucy Varney were always dangerous and prepared to take on the defence at every opportunity. Ella Dawson is emerging as a class keeper for her school and for Lucan Sarsfields and gave an assured performance between the posts for the winners. Aoife O Kane further embellished her growing reputation as a classy full-back and can look forward to the upcoming championship with confidence. Aoife McKearney was one of the stars of the show and had an enjoyable night. Great hurler! Sarah Prendergast with her long striking off both sides hit loads of ball and got outstanding support from

Grace Kenny and Abby Lawlor. Katie Hegarty and Orla Williams are showing great promise and can look forward to long and successful camogie careers. Aoife Carroll, Maeve O Mahony and Hannah Brady did not look out of place in this exalted company and all three gave fine displays. The evening was marked by exceptional performances from Avril Quinn and the fast-improving Emma Sweeney who both made magnificent contribution to the victory. Well done to all the supporters on the night especially the injured but vocal GNS duo Sarah Brogan and Orla Sadlier. The Champions - Scoil Mhuire GNS

2012 Kelly Cup Champions - Archbishop Ryan Archbishop Ryan girls put camogie Croker heartbreak behind them Following the previous night s devastating two point loss in the Cumann na mbunscol camogie final in Croke Park, the girls from Balgaddy bounced back in amazing style in the 12th Lock to reclaim the Kelly Cup after a three year break. Archbishop Ryan were challenged for the Cup this year by a record field of eight schools which also included Scoil Mhuire GNS, Gaelscoil Naomh Padraig, Scoil Mhuire Woodview, Gaelscoil Eiscar Riada, St Johns Adamstown, Scoil Aine and newcomers Griffeen Valley ET. The Kelly Cup has been won in recent years by Gaelscoil Naomh Padraig and Scoil Mhuire Woodview and co-incidentally, including last night, all three victories have been at the expense of the unfortunate Scoil Aine. Elaine Kelly Cup Final winners Archbishop Ryan Lucan

Scoil Aine Elaine Kelly Cup - Runners - up Scoil Aine put in a battling and skilful series of performances winning all of their group games before going down by a puck of a ball in the final. Scoil Aine s Martin Meehan says that they have a young team and are already installed as odds-on favourites for On the night they had brilliant performances throughout the field - none more so than full-back Fiona Daly, midfielders Aoife Mahon and Rhiannon Withero and attackers Yasmin Kilduff and Eimear Kennedy. The ABR girls regained the cup after an un-beaten series of games and were deserving winners on the night. The winning goal was as a result of a scything run through the Scoil Aine defence followed by an un-stoppable shot to the roof of the net by Star of the Show Jessica McClelland. ABR s John Ring was delighted with his full panel of 22 girls all of whom covered themselves in glory and among whom Laura Boland, Nikita Ryan, the dynamic Sophie Kelly, Rebecca Doyle, Tara Lacy and Kelly Murray performed heroics. The supply lines are secure. St Johns Adamstown Elaine Kelly cup

Team Profile : Lucan Sarsfields Senior 7 Lucan Sarsfields Senior 7 Formed in the Autumn of 2005 as a U10 B team, these girls have defied the odds by staying together since then. Their commitment and their never say die attitude in games is a tribute to all of them and makes it a pleasure for the mentors to work with them. Finishing 2 nd in U16 Div 2 League in 2011, there was some trepidation at competing in adult competition in 2012 but they needn t have worried. Playing in Senior League 7 the girls discovered that they could compete on equal terms and those younger legs can get you out of trouble against older adults! They ve had a great run, finishing 2 nd in the League and now looking forward to the Div 7 Championship. Best wishes to Brona Coakley who is currently injured and is missing from the team photo.

Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada Archbishop Ryan Schools Spotlight: Caitriona Bambrick is one of the most important people in Lucan camogie and yet you've probably never even heard of her. Caitriona from Baurnafea in the Kilkenny hill country brought her passion for all things hurling to St Johns primary school in Adamstown in She immediately set about her own camogie revolution. Her multinational school team practice every day and have already put their stamp on Cumann na mbunscoil and Kelly Cups. Her girls are now causing quite a stir at Lucan sarsfields camogie sessions with their athleticism, bravery and skill. From little acorns do mighty oaks grow. An Inspiration.

Gaelscoil Naomh Padraig Dublin Feile Division 3: Lucan Sarsfields played in the Division 3 Dublin Camogie feile in Naomh Mearnog on 26 th May It was a scorching day in keeping with the scorching camogie that we were served. Manager Ian O Connor and mentors Eoghan Williams and Frank Fleming were very proud of the outstanding performances from the Lucan Sarsfields girls in their three matches against Naomh Mearnog, Castleknock and Crumlin. These Lucan girls many of whom are still under-13 or even under-12 are destined for long term camogie careers based in their excellent performances on the day. Well done girls. Scoil Mhuire GNS

Scoil Mhuire Woodview The day the Camogie President came to our school:the Camogie President of Ireland, Aileen Lawlor, came to visit Scoil Mhuire GNS on 23 rd May This was a great day for our school. We had all our School and Lucan Sarsfields flags and bunting flying high. Our Principal Mrs Mary McIvor and our Camogie teacher Ms Mary Ward officially welcomed the president and the other important camogie people who were with her. They came to talk to us about the all-ireland Feile which is on in Dublin in July this year. Hundreds of girls in the school squashed into the Assembly Hall to hear the speeches. All the organisers and coaches from Lucan Sarsfields camogie were there as well to meet the president including Lucy Conroy, Sue Casey, Daragh Feighery, Anne Redmond, Margaret Byrne and Brendan Ryan. We were delighted to see our coach and Dublin hurling captain Johnny McCaffrey there too. Lots of Dublin camogie players and Lucan Sarsfields all-ireland Feile winners were also there. We got lots of autographs and photographs. Rachel Feighery from 4 th Class was introduced to everybody because the President is her aunt. We did a demonstration of the new game of Yard Hurling for the President which she enjoyed very much. It was a brilliant day.

Camogie President Aileen Lawlor visits Dublin Schools promoting Feile All Ireland Feile: Lucan Sarsfields are playing in the all-ireland camogie Feile on 5 th -7 th July. We played in the Dublin Feile competition in May and played fantastically to reach the final in Parnell Park. We marched behind the piper and everybody sang the National Anthem before the game which we lost by only 3 points to Ballyboden. That day, Lucan Sarsfields reached their fifth Dublin Division One Feile final in a row which is a record for any club. We will play against Ballinahinch (Tipperary), Piltown (Kilkenny) and St Judes (Dublin) in the all-ireland. These matches will all be played in the 12 th Lock. The final is in Croke Park and we have our fingers crossed that we might get there. St Josephs College Senior Camogie Team 2012

What s happening off the field. Since the beginning of 2012, the camogie section of Lucan Sarsfields has been trialling a new structure. Camogie has grown in the last 8 years in the club, to unbelievable numbers, where we now have 380 registered girls playing and training every week. It is very important that we succeed, as without the help of parents and volunteers, all the good work done so far will be in vain. With this in mind, there are now two sections within Camogie, the playing side and everything off the pitch which includes fundraising, club volunteers, registrations, and secretary. We hope that by freeing our mentors and trainers of all these tasks, will give them more time to work on improving our girls skills to enable them to play at the highest level. Many thanks to Margaret Byrne who is our new camogie secretary, and to our coordinators Niall McIntyre - fundraising, Robbie Breen - Events, Nora Dowler - Registrar, Helen Prendergast - Volunteer Coordinator. Liam Ryan is now Director of Camogie and will continue as he does best, to look after all field activities. Sue Casey is development officer, and judging by the success, the recent Kelly and McKeown cups were, she has hit the ground running. Importantly Frank Fleming is our child development officer and his door is always open to anyone who has any issues. As always there are still many tasks that still need doing, so why not get involved. Helen would love to hear from you. On behalf of Niall, I would like to thank everyone who contributed recently to the success race-night fundraiser which raised 12,000 on the night for the club. The Last Word: Liam Martin is nominally the Lucan Sarsfields Adult Division Five camogie squad manager but really he's just running his own little TY project. With an average age of 16.2 Liam's girls are running the legs off all comers. All girls born in 1996 are allowed play adult camogie so both Martina McGilloway's and Colette Drum's under- 16 squads are raided every Thursday night for a spot of experimental sampling of the adult arena. And the happiness index is high. The team of young legs is sweeping all before them backboned by the wise heads and quick hands of Mairead Ryan, Maeve Maguire and Marie McLaughlin. This element of TY for the 15 months from June 2012 to September 2013 (and so on every year) is based on the principle of filling every TY day with camogie. Sure what else would they be doing.
