GAA in Belgrove School At time of going to press, Belgrove s senior hurling team is sitting proudly on top of our section of An Corn Marino.

Since Christmas a panel of 30 players drawn from four local clubs Clontarf, Scoil Ui Chonaill, St. Vincents and Craobh Chiarain has trained on a twice weekly basis.

Earlier in the year our junior and senior footballers performed with great distinction in their respective leagues.

Over the course of a long, tough season the senior team battled bravely to finish in the runner-up spot in our section of the prestigious Corn Kitterick.

With three rounds of league games to come after the Easter Holidays, hopes are high within the panel that we can, at least, qualify for the play-offs for the third year in a row. Since Christmas a panel of 30 players drawn from four local clubs Clontarf, Scoil Ui Chonaill, St. Vincents and Craobh Chiarain has trained on a twice weekly basis. Great credit must go to these clubs for the investment they have made in juvenile hurling, an investment which has certainly paid dividends in terms of the school team in recent seasons. Earlier in the year our junior and senior footballers performed with great distinction in their respective leagues. Competing in Corn an Cheid, the junior team topped its section to qualify for the semi-finals where we were beaten by an excellent Hollypark Team. Over the course of a long, tough season the senior team battled bravely to finish in the runner-up spot in our section of the prestigious Corn Kitterick. In a tremendous semi-final we lost out narrowly to eventual winners, Knocklyon. Because An Corn Kitterick brings the best schools from all over the city into competition, a plate An Sciath Mhic Craith is organised for losing semi-finalists and those teams which finished in third place in their sections. Another tight semi-final against Drimnagh Castle in the Phoenix Park saw us lose out again on a trip to Croke Park. A great season nonetheless. UNDER 8 / UNDER 9 FOOTBALL AND HURLING With an average of 40 players turning up each Saturday morning, the year from September 2003 to June 2004 was not only busy, but also quite exciting.

The year was enlivened by several matches which were termed as friendlies. I don t think that the players quite saw it like that.

2 UNDER 8 / UNDER 9 FOOTBALL AND HURLING With an average of 40 players turning up each Saturday morning, the year from September 2003 to June 2004 was not only busy, but also quite exciting. The sheer enthusiasm and energy of the young players certainly woke up many a Mentor on a cold Saturday morning and ensured that good work was done. The year was enlivened by several matches which were termed as friendlies. I don t think that the players quite saw it like that. In any event, enjoyable matches were played against serious opponents such as Scoil Uí Chonaill; Na Fianna; Naomh Barróg and St. Vincent s. Whether won or lost, home or away, all teams acquitted themselves well and accepted the outcome in a good sportsmanlike manner. Of course, the best part of the year, as always for this age group, was the Mini League, which culminated in a fantastic Finals Day at the Clubhouse. For Mentors and parents the sheer enthusiasm of the teams and the joy of the players on receiving cups and medals certainly makes up for those wintry Saturday mornings. Clontarf. Mention must be made of the indoor Hurling in DCU. This lasted for six weeks in January and February 2004 and was of invaluable assistance to all players in the acquisition of skills. Since September 2004 the Under 8 s, who have since transformed into the Under 9 s, have trained well, every Tuesday for Football and every Friday and most Sundays for Hurling, with a match almost every Saturday. The Astroturf facility has been of enormous benefit and has made training in the winter months feasible in all weather conditions. It is difficult to imagine how one could do without it. The players acquisition of skills has come on by leaps and bounds since September 2004 and the benefits of training can be seen in previously weak players. This is most encouraging as is the players During the year, Hurling training was introduced and following increasing attachment to and identification with the Club. However, sometimes this enthusiasm has to be kept in check, particularly when the players perceive themselves as being obliged to play against hackers. on the success of the Summer Camp, held in late August 2003, many players were greatly enthused. It is amazing what the presence of County players, such as Eddie Brennan and D.J. Carey, can achieve. While only one match was played with another club, Na Fianna, it was a great experience and Clontarf s name was held high. It is worth noting that the team which played Na Fianna was and is the youngest ever Hurling team fielded by Vernon Racing New Shop at 197 Clontarf Road Open April 2005 A notable feature of 2005 has been the introduction of the Go Games. While certain rules caused an element of confusion and disquiet, the concept has settled in and it certainly encourages the players to operate as a team and to avoid the mé féin mentality. This is particularly positive for the weaker players. The remainder of 2005 is to be looked forward to and if as much progress is made, as has been achieved since September 2004, then it will turn out to be an excellent year. Very often it takes the form of games and the social benefits to the child are huge. They learn to compete, win and lose as part of a team. Friendships are forged. They are presented with the challenge of coping with rules and with expectations of fair play. All exercise, game based or not, confers major health gains, not least prevention of obesity which is the major health risk for modern Irish children. In addition, children who exercise regularly gain in self esteem and confidence. As parents, educators and team mentors we should strive to graduate children with a positive experience of exercise and a firm view that regular exercise participation is both perfectly normal and very healthy. The recommended MINUMUM amount of exercise that EVERY child should get EVERY DAY is ONE HOUR. Unfortunately, the reality is that this does not happen for many Irish children. The Red Rogues Club will help. This will be a club for 3-6 year old boys and girls. It will meet twice a week in Clontarf Club House, starting in September. The time slot will be 4-5 PM, Mondays and Wednesdays. The children will get to play all sorts of games. The primary aim will be to have fun but they will also get puffy and sweaty and will go home red-faced. The club will be run by Caoimhe Bracken. 4 Under 10 Boys Hurling and Football 2004 was an important year for the children born in 1995 in Clontarf. After several years in the nursery, they enjoyed their initial experiences in the Juvenile North Dublin league. In return they are now recogised as a talented group of players with promising futures. Their talent was exhibited by their successful participation in both the white and red teams in the Community games and by their success in the annual Canavan Blitz in O'Toole s. Two cups in one year is a great return for any team! (Well done, lads!) As the year drew to a close, they took the opportunity afforded by the new all-weather pitch to hone their hurling skills. Hurling could represent the real success story for 2005 Under 11 Boys Hurling and Football In the year 2004 (and into 2005), the standard of football and hurling for the Clontarf s Under 11 teams showed continued improvement. The panel of U11 players increased by 4 during the past year and now stands at 40 regular players, from which 3 football and 2 hurling teams are fielded. In the 6 months to end of June 2004, the 3 football teams continued to play under the conditioned rules format introduced in During the later part of the 2004, competition reverted to standard rules format with 4 matches played in anticipation of division gradings. However, with the launch of the Go Games initiative in Nov 2004, divisional gradings were suspended in anticipation of new games rules and competition. Over the full year 2004, the combined 3 teams recorded an impressive 73% win rate. The launch of Go Games Smart Touch in late January 2005, again sees Clontarf fielding 3 teams in football and 2 teams in hurling. The new format is on a trial period, after which the decisions will be taken regarding game formats for the remainder of the year. On the hurling front, focused training on skills combined with match practice, saw overall skill levels improve. The two teams showed steady improvement in the course of the12 matches played during A dedicated training session is held on Sunday afternoons from 5 to 6pm, on the club s new astro pitch facility. Under 12 Boys Hurling and Football The under 12 football panel comprises of 40 boys and through out the year they have shown great commitment to coaching and improvement in the skills of gaelic

this proved to be a very strong league. The league consisted of 8 teams and we finished third in Under 11 A s 2004 that league.

5 Under 12 Boys Hurling and Football The under 12 football panel comprises of 40 boys and through out the year they have shown great commitment to coaching and improvement in the skills of gaelic football.there are two teams fielding each week at this age.the bulk of these lads have been together since the age of 4/5. The first team are in division 1 north.this proved to be a very strong league. The league consisted of 8 teams and we finished third in Under 11 A s 2004 that league.they have had some great matches against the teams above us drawing with Raheny who eventually won the league and eventually overcoming Castleknock for the first time at this age who finished second in the league.next year will be the last year in a northside league only and the aim is to finish high enough to go into div 1 for at under 13s. The second team plays in division 4 and are improving all the time finishing mid table in the league. Next year their aim is to get promoted to div 3 and the way they are going along this is well achievable. All the lads are a very talented bunch of young footballers and will no doubt bring success to the club in the future. The group were invited to play in a tournament last Christmas out in St James Gaels. It was an 11 a side competition and we brought out a Under 11 B s 2004 panel mixed up of under 11s and under 10s and we had a very good tournament exiting narrowly in the semi final after a very hardy battle and great credit must go to the lads for the way they played. Under 12s Hurling Hurling at under11 is getting stronger and stronger and we now have 19 lads training at the back of the club house on a Sunday.They had some great matches after a poor start in the league and one of their best games was the win over eventual league winners Commercials.This bunch of lads are a talented bunch who just needed proper coaching and training in the skills of hurling.the addition of Donal O Sullivan and John Troy with their knowledge of hurling has proved to be the difference this year in their performances, culminating in the team winning their divison playoff when they played excellent hurling and showed great determination to beat Setanta(a hurling club)it was a proud moment to see them getting presented with their medals.there is definitely the makings of a fine hurling team in these lads.
