Housing at the end of the 19 th century This presenta6on is constructed with comments on slides preceding the photograph to which they refer. There are 100 slides in total included in 5 sec6ons, which scratch the surface of domes6c architecture built over the last 800 years.
Introduc6on This slideshow is designed to show the very rich heritage of houses that are s6ll being lived in at the beginning of the 21st- century and which were in existence over 100 years ago. At this 6me, when some housing is demolished afer only 30 years, the age of some of these buildings is remarkable. However, many of these old buildings have a character that new buildings do not. Whilst some of the slides speak for themselves, some are preceded by a short descrip6on.
Norman Hall The next slide shows an appropriate building with which to begin this presenta6on, claiming to be the oldest con6nuously lived in building in the country. Norman Hall (Details can be found on the Web) is in the village of SuOon Courtenay (Eric Blair/George Orwell and Herbert Asquith, who lived next door are buried in the churchyard). The southern eleva6on shown on this photograph includes the dis6nc6ve Norman door. The building has been massively extended over the 800 years.
12th Century and addi6ons
Cruck cooage This is one of several buildings in the village of Harwell with a cruck construc6on; one 6mber serving as both the upright and the roof- truss. Some were erected as dwellings and others as barns that have subsequently been converted to residen6al use (eg Lockton s Farm). The origins of the house at Middle Farm/Kings Manor go back to 1280 and some of the mediaeval barns have been converted to office use.
Welleshead 13 th Century
The Causeway Monks from Abingdon Abbey used a causeway to access sites at SuOon Courtenay and Charney BasseO. This raised structure was necessary due to the flat and low- lying terrain. In Steventon this is largely preserved and on its route through the village it is fronted by collec6on of 15 th century 6mber framed houses including one owned and conserved by the Na6onal Trust.
15 th Century
The North Star Steventon is on the Great Western Railway and the North Star was an early steam locomo6ve. The public house, also on the Causeway, is a genuine local with sea6ng round a fire in one bar and round one table in the back.
Public House and Listed Building
East St Helen s Street The Merchant s House is owned by a building preserva6on trust and open to the public on special days. The frame is original but doors and opening have changed over the centuries. It is one of many fine houses on a street which backs onto the Thames. Abingdon is an appropriate town from which to take examples of housing through the centuries. It lays claim (challenged by Colchester) to be the oldest con6nuously lived in seolement in England.
Abingdon Merchant s House 1430
Abingdon Almshouses Long Alley is just one of many almshouses in Abingdon. There are two more (TwiOy s and Brick Alley sharing St Helen s churchyard. The trees in the photograph are on the far bank of the River Thames. It is interes6ng to consider whether the addi6on of the porches and lantern would have been allowed (ie planning and listed building consent) if applied for in the 20th or 21st Centuries.
Long Alley Almshouse At the western side of the churchyard, Long Alley is the oldest almshouse, erected 1446, with the central porch added 1605 and lantern over the hall in 1707.
Hengrave Hall This is a carefully conserved Tudor mansion Near Bury St Edmunds in private ownership, used as a conference centre and venue for event and weddings. It is an example of where a viable reuse of a building has jus6fied and enabled a high- quality of restora6on. Its success as a venue also allows it to be appreciated by thousands of people using it every year.
16 th Century Hengrave Hall
Lanhydrock This is mansion in the care of the Na6onal Trust. It is doubgul whether the very substan6al changes that took place in an era before consent was required would have sa6sfied the current test of preserving or enhancing the original 17 th century house? The special feature of Lanhydrock is the difference between the accommoda6on for the family and that of the very considerable number of staff in service jobs looking afer the family, the house and the grounds.(end of part 1)
