7 7 Na Sia Dùthchannan agus cànanan Ceilteach Obair 1 Cànanan Ceilteach There are 6 Celtic Nations and each one has its own language and culture. The Celtic Nations are Scotland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Wales, Cornwall and Brittany. The Celtic languages can be split into two groups: Goidelic and Brythonic. These are sometimes called Q-Celtic and P-Celtic. The Q-Celtic languages are Scottish Gaelic, Irish and Manx and the P-Celtic languages are Welsh, Breton and Cornish. The Celtic people originally came from mainland Europe and invaded the British Isles more than 2000 years ago. The word Celt comes from the Greek word Keltoi, meaning barbarian and history tells us that the Celts were a ferocious race of people. One historian at the time described the Celts as being very tall with rippling muscles and clear white skin. He says that they had thick, shaggy hair that they bleached blonde with lime. They wore checked cloaks that fastened with a brooch at the shoulder, brightly coloured shirts and trousers called bracae. Obair 2 Ceiltich air feadh an t-saoghail Ceistean 1. Scottish Gaelic: Cape Breton, Canada Gaeilge: New York, USA 2. This has been due to large numbers of Gaelic and Gaeilge speakers emigrating some through choice but mostly by force and economic change. 3. Patagonia, South America. In 1865, 153 Welsh speakers started a colony there. They thought that Welsh was in danger of dying out and they wanted to set up a little Wales away from the damaging influence of English. 4. One hundred and fifty three Welsh speakers went there and there are now 1,500 Welsh speakers there.
