3 From the Baronage Greetings Rowany, Well Spring is well and truly upon us and Summer is just around the corner. There are many events happening over the coming months in Rowany and in our neighbouring Barony of Mordenvale. Firstly Gui and I would like to thank Stowe for putting on a lovely Alhambra Nights feast. It was a very pleasant and balmy evening for sitting around enjoying some great food and company both new and old. Well done to Elysant, Tatya and their crew of helpers. We would also like to congratulate Alfgeirr Agnarsson who was admitted to the Order of the Berries and We welcome Leinad of Stowe as Our newest Baronial guard. We would also like to remind you all that recommendations for awards would be appreciated and to help you remember We have written a short document that explains what Rowany s Baronial awards are and what they are for. You will find that document appearing in this month s Folia. Some of the upcoming events that we would love to see you at: Spring War, 3 rd - 5 th October- held in the Barony of Mordenvale Okewaite Gathering, 24 th October- held in Goulburn, our newest proposed Canton of Rowany St Crispin s Day, 25 th October- to celebrate the victory of the English over the French at the Battle of Agincourt. This will be held at St Peters Primary School. St Ursulan Feast, 28 th November- to celebrate the College of St Ursula and her many Virgins and Martyrs. This will be held at Glebe Town Hall. Rowany Yule, 12 th December- being run by House Pandora at the Harold Corr Community Hall, Cottage Street, Werrington. Their Majesties will be in attendance at this event. 12 th Night (Kingdom event),9 th -10 th January- to be held in the proposed Canton of Okewaite at the Goulburn Brewery As many of you know, the coming months will be a period of change for Gui and I, as the impending birth of a new member of the Barony draws nigh. Whilst We will endeavour to remain calm and organised during this period, please forgive Us if we appear flustered or tardy in Our Duties as your Baron and Baroness. SPQR AElfled and Gui 2

4 From the Seneschal Greetings, Everyone is getting busy as we come into the last quarter of the year. I would like to take this opportunity to ask for help in fulfilling my duties as my work and study load increases. With great regret I must note that my fine deputy, Engelin will be moving to Mordenvale in November, so will not be able to train with a view to succeeding me. I am sure the populace of Mordenvale will be glad to gain such a lovely person, as much as those of Rowany will regret her loss. Therefore I am asking once again for expressions of interest in the position of deputy Seneschal, particularly someone who would be willing to get all the training they need to take on the office itself, subject to the application process. This is a good opportunity for someone who might not have the experience to become Seneschal today, but is willing to learn so that he or she can take it on in the future. Holding the office of Seneschal is very rewarding, especially in Rowany where we have so many talented and creative people who need a reliable structure so they can get on with making Rowany glorious; I see it as the Seneschal s job to make sure the structure is there. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who is interested in becoming deputy Seneschal once Engelin leaves, and also in hearing nominations of anyone you think might make a good deputy Seneschal, but who just doesn t know it yet! I will be in England for this month, having been called away on family business, however you can still contact me by , seneschal@rowany.sca.org.au. I promise I will not take expressions of interest or nominations as rock solid commitments, but I hope that you will consider serving Rowany so that Rowany can continue as a source of enjoyment for all of us. Lunch is partial potluck; there will be 2 BBQ ovens on site and someone to look after the cooking - or you can cook your own steak if you prefer. Sausages, Marinated Chicken legs and wings, breads and condiments supplied - Bring an *UNUSUAL* salad and some pot luck goodies for a few more than yourselves. Plenty of water available. Other consumables up to you. 4

6 Baronial Awards and Appointments As mentioned in Our greeting, here is some important information on Rowany s Baronial awards. We would also like to remind you all that recommendations for awards would be appreciated and helpfully to Us in acknowledging those in the Barony (and outside) who provide a service to us all. Rowany's Award Orders Order of the Berries- Arts and Sciences award, which may include teaching and performing. Order of the Frantic Falcon- For those that go above and beyond the duty of Stewarding of events, such as our Festival Stewards. Order of the Golden Staple- Award of Service, which may include organising and running events and mentoring younger members of the Barony. Yeoman of Rowany- Rowany s award for service in the martial fields. Order of the Cinquefoil- this award is given to those not in our Barony for their help and support of Rowany events and its populace. Bestowed Roles within the Barony These are other important roles that the Barony bestows to an individual and they are as follows: Bard of Rowany- This role is for those performers in our Barony who regularly entertain in song, music, story and poetry. Once appointed they hold the position for a year and are allowed free entry into any Rowany event as long as they perform at that event. Baronial Guard- this role is rather important to all Barons and Baroness. The Baronial guard protect the Baron and Baroness in battle (should they fight) and does various running around duties such as holding awards, providing water and setting up Baronial courts. Without them We would surely be at a loss. The following roles are rather self explanatory but are important in the fields of martial service: Baronial Heavy Champion- a heavy combatant whose role is to lead the Baronial troops in war and to protect and support their Baron and Baroness in battle. Baronial Rapier Champion- a rapier combatant who excels on the field of 5

8 rapier. They also have a tendency to travel to other Baronies to learn and teach new skills. So if you know of anyone who you think is missing out on one of Rowany s awards please write to Us at rowany@sca.org.au AElfled and Gui Book Review The Riddle and the Knight - In search of Sir John Mandeville Giles Milton Hodder & Stoughton 2001 ISBN Once more respected than Chaucer and more widely published than Shakespeare, with "more than 300 hand written copies still existing in European libraries", Sir John Mandeville now lies forgotten in the dustbin of history, with his reputation in tatters. This book relays in a very roundabout fashion, chopping from here to there and back again, the author's attempt to prove whether Sir John Mandeville really did make a thirty four year voyage around the world, starting from England in1322, or whether, as various nineteenth century authors claimed, that he was a rogue and a charlataan who never even left England in the first place. Through anecdotes of the people that he met with as a part of his search, of his own attempts to see whether he could prove the lie and with what resulted from his attempts to find the actual Sir John, along with glimpses into Middle Ages, the Renaissance and even the modern world, Giles Milton presents us with a fascinating man and an interesting supposition. Though the book ended in what I felt was a hurried manner - as Milton only visits the Middle East, and doesn't continue all the way in Sir John's footsteps, and was not quite the book I expected it to be, The Riddle and the Knight was nevertheless a very absorbing and intriguing book. 7
