Everyone did a great job! BAGPIPE RAFFLE! We are gearing up for the Jim Thomson U.S. School of Piping & Drumming and we have bagpipe raffle tickets for sale. Your chances are good as we will only sell 600 tickets and the bagpipes are a wonderful set of McCallum Bagpipes. They will be all set with reeds and ready to play, and a case is included! Tickets are 1 for $10, 3 for $25, or 7 for $50. If you would like to purchase tickets please call Jude at Cash, check or credit card are accepted!!! Don t forget that NACHS will now be meeting at the Masonic Lodge. The meeting is the first Tuesday each month starting at 6. The Masonic Lodge is located at 107 E. Birch. Volunteers Needed! We will again be partnering with the Riordan Mansion for the Riordan Days of Summer on June 15. Volunteers are needed for helping with whiskey pouring, crafts and story reading. If you are interested in helping out please call Jude at Bake Sale Items Needed During the Riordan Days of Summer there will be a bake sale. If anyone is willing to donate baked goods they want them in bags they can charge $1 each for. If you want to bake for this event please call Jude at Signs Signs Everywhere Signs! It s that time again.we have signs to put out. If you would be willing to display a magnetic sign on your vehicle, put up posters or flyers at your local businesses please call Jude at It s this grass roots effort that helps us get the word out about our festival! 3 In the October 2005 NACHS newsletter, we ran this article about standing stones located throughout the Celtic Regions. Standing Stones - a Common Thread among Celtic Regions By Bic Waterman, the Virtual Visitor Relics of ancient Celts early expressions of culture, science, religion, and geography are visible today in all of the Celtic regions. They are called a variety of names, including menhirs, dolmans, standing stones, and stone rings. Theories abound about their functions in astronomy, astrology, artistic expression, and as markers for buried officials, trails, battle victories, and land boundaries. Following is a brief look at standing stones still visible today. Asturias Most stone structures here date from about 4500 BC to about 2000 BC. Celts in this period constructed numerous menhirs, sometimes aligned in groups, with astronomical significance. Their dolmans were often covered with earth, indicating the possibility of a burial tomb. Brittany Carnac, a village near the Atlantic coast of Brittany is famous as the site of more than 3,000 prehistoric stone monuments. The single standing stones were hewn from local granite, now worn by time and weather and covered with white lichen. The stones have been cherished and revered for thousands of years by the Bretons. Cornwall The Merry Maiden Stones, a circular group of 19 menhirs located near Lands End, has a widely known folklore story: 19 young ladies were on their way to Sunday church services when two lads playing bagpipes in an adjacent field distracted them. The ladies strayed into the field to dance and laugh with the music. A thunderbolt transfixed both the pipers and maidens to the spot where they now forever stand, turned to stone for the sin of dancing on the Sabbath. Galicia People of Iberia created dolmens and menhirs, as they made their way from Spain and northern France to Ireland and Scotland. These stone constructions are one of the remnants of the movement of prehistoric man from Iberia to the northern islands. Ireland One of the most well known of Ireland s standing stones is Ballycrovane, in County Cork. This sleek stone resembles a piece of modern sculpture, and is about 17 feet in height. It stands just 600 feet from the coastguard station at Ballycrovane s harbor, on the Beara Peninsula. Many researchers think this stone may have been erected to mark one of the westernmost points in Ireland. Isle of Man During the Neolithic Period, 4000 BC to 2000 BC, large standing stones were erected around the island. Many of these massive structures formed burial cairns for important people, and included pottery and flints. Well-preserved menhirs can be found at King Orry's Grave in Laxey, Meayll Circle near Cregneash, and Ballaharra Stones in St Johns. Scotland Scotland is home to thousands of standing stones. Among the most significant are The Stones of Stenness, and the Ring of Brodgar, both on Orkney, and the Stones of Callanish, on the Hebridean island of Lewis. The tallest of the Stenness Stones is about 16 feet, and the tallest of the Brodgar stones is almost 19 feet. Some scholars believe the two sites may have been linked in an unknown relationship for astronomical observations. Local tradition on the island of Lewis explains the presence of The Standing Stones of Callanish by saying that when giants of old who then lived on the island refused Christian conversion, St. Kieran turned them to stone. The tallest of these is about 15 feet. Wales Maen Llia is located in the Brecon Beacon National Park. It is a large diamond-shaped slab of conglomerate, nearly 12 feet tall and only two feet thick. It is likely that a quarter to a third of the stone is below ground, so it has managed to stand up to thousands of years of wild Welsh weather. It lies at the junction of two valleys and its visibility from afar suggests that it might have been a territorial marker or a guidepost on an ancient walking path.
