1 19 March 2015 I Wet Weather Line Head of Sport and Activities Mr Dave Capra Summer and Winter Sports The boys of ATC have written a great opening chapter to the sporting story of ATC with strong performances across summer sports including Paddle Play, Water Polo, Swimming, Cricket, Indoor Cricket, Volleyball and Triathlon. With the excitement of winter sports ahead both at ATC and for clubs, I would like to encourage our boys to finish their summer seasons with the same enthusiasm, commitment and energy that they had at the beginning of the season. Playing in a team sport, I believe is one of the truly great life experiences that any person can have and will teach many great lessons that will prove valuable in all areas of their lives. I hope the boys have enjoyed their first official ATC team sport experience and are looking forward to finishing their season strongly! Cricket Canteen With the end of the cricket season for the Year 4 Club teams this weekend and our final round of games for our interschool season for Year 5 to 8 finishing next Saturday 28 March, I would like to thank the many parents who have coordinated, cooked and served at the cricket canteen every Saturday morning for both Term 4 of 2014 and Term 1 of Home cricket games have become a wonderful community event, with many parents and family members from both ATC teams and opposition teams enjoying watching the cricket and socialising. This has largely been due to the hard work of Mrs Megan Clifford, Mrs Andrea McAvoy and Mrs Anne-Louise Wells in coordinating the logistics and parent volunteers who facilitate the canteen and create the social, welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere of an ATC home cricket game. ATC Swimming Championships Last Friday evening saw the end of the official ATC swimming season and the ATC Swimming Championships. There is a full wrap-up of results in the Aquatics section below, however I would like to congratulate all swimmers on a fantastic season and strong performances on Friday evening. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Mr Paul Jones together with Mrs Fiona Kearney have built in just 6 months an amazing swimming program, which has created great opportunities for our swimmers to realise potential beyond their own imagination and has also created a wonderful swimming community and culture at ATC. Well done! Coaches - As the summer sporting season comes to an end and the winter season begins I would like to thank the many staff members who have given generously of their time and effort to make sport and activities at ATC an enjoyable, engaging and rewarding experience for our boys. The experience each boy has in sport is due largely to the energy of the people who work with our boys on a day-to-day basis at training and games and I would like to thank all our teachers, staff members and school officers involved in offering these great experiences to our boys. Tennis please note the ATC Open Champs have been moved to 12.00pm to 5.00pm on Sunday 29 March so as not to clash with club rugby and ATC AFL games. Please Mr Bruce Dick at bruce.tennis@gmail.com if you wish to get involved. Warriors Go Brach! Dave Capra ATC SKI TRIP In January 2016 we will be taking a group of Year 8 and 9 students (current Yr 7 and 8) students to Japan for 9 days to stay on the slopes at Hakuba and ski Goryu, Hakuba 47 and Happo One. ATC SKI TRIP Information Evening will be held in on Tuesday 31 March in the Chapel at 6.00pm for all interested parents and boys. *Please note we are moving the trip from NZ to Japan as the snow is much more reliable, the skiing better and the cost with an extra day of skiing is the same as NZ.

2 Athletic Performance Coordinator Mr Luke Donatini Last weekend I attended the 2015 National Junior Track and Field Championships and Sydney Track Classic at Homebush, Sydney. I was predominantly there to support and assist some of the athletes that I have been coaching and working with for many years now. Whilst assisting them warm up and watching them compete, I could not help but notice all the other athletes, mostly of secondary school age, go through their paces as well. More interesting was to observe the athlete s coach and parents and how they supported, advised, consoled or celebrated with the athlete. Everyone was getting involved in one way or another, assisting the athlete to potentially make it happen. Making it happen in sport does not just occur, it takes time, many weeks, months and years of practice and dedication to become the best one can be as an athlete, as a coach and also as a supporting parent. Please never underestimate the impact you have on the success of an athlete (your son) by your words, actions and level of support. I witnessed this first hand on many occasions over the weekend where the words and support (or lack of) did determine the success of an athlete. For an athlete to Make it Happen within the sporting arena they need to feel: Well prepared (done the work) Relaxed (but not too relaxed) Confident (in themselves and their team/coach) Supported (by coach, team mates and parents) Enjoyment (remember it is hard to gain great success without enjoyment of what you are doing) As a parent or coach, it is vital for us to buy into the above mentioned so that our athletes (your son) can positively engage in their sporting choice and maximize their performance to make it happen. Witnessing both ends of the spectrum (of support) at the National Championships last weekend further cemented in my mind the importance of positive support to assist an athlete make it happen. The wrong choice of words, the wrong tone of voice or even just silence can really make or break an athlete s performance (or confidence). Sometimes we do think that athletes, particularly at a higher (elite) level, should be able to deal with all of this and the stress of competition, however, I believe, it is more important to offer greater positive support at this level as they (the athlete or team) do place themselves under more pressure and have an expectation that they must successfully perform. This can also be said for schoolboy sport as well. I am very conscious of ensuring that the environment that we create will ultimately impact on the performance of our athlete/s. This can also be said for the environment created At home before the game In the car on the way to the event (and on the way home post event) At the event warm up/preparation During the event/game (comments, tone etc) So to assist an athlete/team to Make It Happen we all need to work together collectively in the one positive direction to ensure success and constant enjoyment. When this is done well everyone wins (athlete, coach, parents) and positive success is achieved for all.

3 Athletic Performance Coordinator Mr Luke Donatini Cross Country Round Up EREA Cross Country Meet Friday 27 March 4.00pm All ATC Runners are encouraged to attend! Our first invitational meet will be an EREA Cross Country Meet at Nudgee College on Friday 27 March. This is a great opportunity for or ATC XC Runners to race over 2km or 3km in a friendly welcoming environment with runners from other EREA Colleges (Nudgee College, St Patrick s College, St Laurence s College and Ambrose Treacy College). On the day (Friday 27 March approx. 4pm to 6pm) 2km Race / 3km Race Nike Van (offering 25% off various colour Flyknit Racer, 15% off shoes & $20 Dri Fit Tee s) Nike will be providing two shirts for each school to award to their most deserving athletes. Special prize for the fastest 2000m and 3000m effort on the day. BBQ Sausage Sizzle and Drinks ($2 a sausage, $2 a drink OR $5 for 2 sausages and a drink) Touch Football Games (after races) so the boys from each College can mingle with each other and get to know each other. We are hoping that we will get a lot of interest from ATC students to attend this event. Put it in your diary, get excited as we get stuck into the first of many ATC XC running events in ATC XC RUNNERS LET S BREAK SOME HEARTS as we RUN TALL AND STRONG for ATC! General Strength & Fitness Session Wednesday morning fitness at Jack Bowers Oval is gaining great momentum with in excess of 30 plus students from years 5 to year 8 now regularly attending. The boys have been working on Upper Body Strength Lower Body Strength Core Strength Cardiovascular Fitness Flexibility and Good Technique Years 5 to Year 8 Students are Welcome to ATC Strength & Fitness Wednesday Mornings (6.45am to 8.00am): Fitness Training Circuit Work. We meet at the shed at Jack Bowers Oval. No Rugby Boots Required (Joggers, water bottle, towel and training apparel).

4 Cricket Coordinator Mr Brett Henschell Round 7 provided an opportunity for ATC teams in Years 5 & 6 to test themselves against Nudgee College for a second time this season but Nudgee was too strong. Despite an improved showing on their Round 2 effort from the ATC boys, all five matches were lost. ATC 6B came the closest, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory with a couple of loose overs at the very end. Good effort for most of the match boys. I m sure you will learn from that experience. 5C Green gained revenge on 5C White for their Round 5 loss with a win on Friday afternoon. 8A were too strong for 7A in the local derby, thanks to a five wicket haul from Tyler Neville, whilst 8B lost to Churchie. 7B are still yet to win a match, Mr Capra, this time going down to the might of the parents. The boys scored an impressive 101 runs but just could not keep the skillful parental batting line up in check. 4A put a series of close matches behind them with a big win over Valleys Bunyips whilst Year 4 U10 White and Green both ran second in their matches. Please note: ATC teams in Years 5-8 have two more matches to play and will finish on Saturday, 28 March ATC teams in Year 4 have one more match to play and will finish on Saturday, 21 March Indoor cricketers have one more match to play and will finish on Saturday, 21 March As this will be my last report for the season, due to a short coaching and playing stint in South Africa from the 22nd, I take the opportunity to thank each and every member of the ATC cricket community for their contribution in making our inaugural cricket season such a success. A solid platform has been established on which future seasons can be built. Preparations for the season will commence in July and you can expect to hear from me shortly thereafter.
