April Fishing Charter Report Tampa, Clearwater, St.Pete Beach Posted on April 16, 2017 April s Fishing Charter Report For the Tampa Bay, Clearwater beach, and St.Pete Beach area is Good!!!! Just about everything is biting right now, and the Big Tarpon are on the way! Snook, Redfish, Trout, Mackerel, Kingfish, Triple tail, Cobia and many more are keeping anglers busy as of lately! Inside Tampa bay Snook and Redfish have been the hot targets for my anglers fishing the last two weeks. We have had so extreme winds, and a cold front, but the fish have still been biting good. Live sardines have been abundant in the area right now so the fish are biting well. Live bait has been the key to our success, and having plenty of bait is key. We have been either free lining or using a bobber with the sardines this week and the fish have been biting both. Snook are on the move but once located they are willing to bite. The redfish have been on most flats, but having high water has been the best to locate them. Some day it takes to some time to find them, but once located the action can be solid for an hr or two!! Over on the Gulf side King fish, Mackerel, Triple tail, Trout, and Redfish have come to the boat on recent charters. In Clearwater beach area we caught trout, redfish, and triple tail fishing around the barrier islands using live and dead bait, and down south in St.Pete I was able to catch plenty of Kingfish, and Mackerel slow trolling live bait near Egmount Shipping channel while in Sight of the Don Ceasar on St.Petersburg Beach.

Now is the time to get out with family, friends and co workers for great fishing and even better memories! Summer is just around the corner and hotels and Fishing Guides are going to book up fast so now is the time to get both booked. If you are looking to book a Tarpon fishing charter, Homosassa Scalloping charter, or a Family fishing adventure this summer give me a call, text or . 7 Fishing Tampa Bay Bridges by David Brown Your roadmap for success on the biggest reefs in Florida waters. fishing Tampa Bay bridges. Bridges carry folks from Point A to Point B, but how about Point Sea? You have to get out of your vehicle for that one, but sling a bait under one of these people pathways and you ll find angling action aplenty. Here s your quick primer on Sometimes the direct approach works best you park over the fish and send them something appealing. Other times, backing off and letting the fish come to you makes sense. More on this later. As a case study, consider the four main bridges which span the Greater Tampa Bay region (see accompanying story). Add to this the many smaller bridges linking residential areas, and the area presents an assortment of emergent structures not unlike the many oil and natural gas drilling rigs dotting the northern Gulf. These structures provide fish much-needed shade, good ambush points with current dynamics and lots of forage species. More or less an emergent reef, a bridge gives anglers a clear target to fish and the ability to move up or down a few pilings to locate the bite. Common targets include tarpon, cobia, pompano, snapper, grouper, sheepshead, redfish, black drum, speckled trout and snook. Spanish mackerel and bluefish make seasonal appearances, and ladyfish are always a possibility. Tampa Bay bridges produce year-round but the popularity increases as the thermometer rises. Fish and anglers beat the heat by sticking close to a bridge s shaded waters. When thunderstorms threaten, a bridge is your umbrella and windbreak. No need to run back to port just tuck behind the downwind side and ride out the blow.

Bridges avail themselves to a variety of fishing styles, determined mostly by your target species. Here s a roundup of productive options. Live Baits Drifting live pilchards or threadfins downcurrent past pilings is a popular tarpon tactic, but don t hesitate to fire down a small greenie on a light hook and splitshot. Mangrove snapper and the occasional grouper feed around bridge pilings just like they do on ledges, limestone outcroppings and coral reefs. Chumming Anchor uptide of a bridge and hang a chum block off your stern to amass enticing bait schools and provide predators a scent trail to follow. Snapper will rise from the pilings, mackerel will swarm the area and you ll probably raise a few cobia and sharks. Supplementing a chumline with freshly cut threadfin herring chunks can jumpstart a good bite. Once you get the party rocking, freeline live shrimp, pilchards or threads on 2/0 circle hooks toward the pilings. Let out line in 5-foot increments to count back and locate the hot zone. In strong current or choppy conditions, add a splitshot or replace the circle hook with a jighead to keep your bait from kiting too high in the water column. For a natural chum job, scrape the pilings to crush and release barnacles or mussels. The scent stimulates sheepshead, drum, redfish and pompano all likely recipients of cut shrimp dropped into the scent zone on 1 4-ounce jigheads. (Light hooks and splitshots also work, but jigheads effect a more streamlined presentation that drops quicker in current without spooking fish.)

Moving Targets Run shallow-diving plugs like a Bomber Long A, Yo-Zuri or Rapala X-Rap right next to the pilings, where snook and speckled trout chase baitfish. Jigs and baitfish imitators like a D.O.A. TerrorEyz work well in the slack water behind bridge fenders. For mackerel, cast a Clarkspoon rigged with a 1- or 2-ounce cigar weight above the leader. A good rig for landlubbers, the weight hugs the bottom and the spoon flutters up like a fleeing baitfish. Jigging A 1 4-ounce jig set through the tail of a live shrimp and hopped across the bottom will turn up a diverse selection of bridge residents including redfish, flounder, cobia, sheepshead, black drum, gag grouper, mangrove snapper and juvenile tarpon. Probably the most popular jigging target in local waters is the pompano. Species-specific jigs such as Doc s Goofy style or small, round-head bucktails tempt the golden nuggets. When the fish are thick, tip a bare jig with a live fiddler crab and it s pompano fireworks. Pomps may bite one-here-one-there, but more often than not, you ll have to search several pilings to find the mother lode. Do your looking with jigs and hit the school with fiddlers. I caught some of the biggest pompano I ve ever seen with St. Petersburg skipper Capt. Paul Hawkins. Targeting one of the smaller bridges on the Sunshine Skyway s approach section, Hawkins worked the upcurrent side during an incoming tide and switched to the downcurrent side when we returned later in the day to fish the outgoing water. One of the area s true salts, Hawkins taught me an important tactical point: Fishing a bridge doesn t necessarily mean hugging the structure. There are times when pompano and other species will feed close to the structure, but consider that the

eddies spun by flowing tides can create feeding scenarios 100 yards from the pilings. The plume of tidal flow, accelerated by funneling through the bridge, can move the fish a significant distance from the structure. Similarly, tides move bait schools around and that often influences where predators position themselves. Further defining the proximity variables, a recent trip with Capt. Chuck Rogers of Tampa found us hovering under the Gandy and pulling a few mangrove snapper from the pilings. When the action slowed, we moved outside and did the anchorand-chum routine. Rogers noted the wisdom of fanning a bridge section to locate the sweet spot. Once we dialed in the spot, several keeper mangos hit the ice. The real fun occurred when we noticed several brown figures darting through our chumline. Rogers flipped out a pinfish with an ounce sinker and brought a short cobia to the boat fairly quickly, but previous success on this spot told him the real talent had yet to take the stage. We left the rod with a freelined pinner in the transom rod holder and five minutes back into the snapper deal, that big rod doubled with a 25-pounder. After Hours Night fishing is always a bonus, as bridge lights attract baitfish, which draw in predators. From June through October, tarpon patrol the shadowlines of most Tampa Bay bridges and anglers drifting live baitfish or accurately casting MirrOlures, D.O.A. Baitbusters and swimbaits will put a few nocturnal poons in the air. Just don t dangle your feet over the side, as warmer months find loads of sharks patrolling the pilings. On a particularly memorable outing, we were treated to a glowing green light show as millions of planktonic players erupted with bioluminescence as our boat moved through their masses. The crescendo came under the Gandy Bridge when a line of cruising tarpon suddenly bolted as an honest 12-foot figure passed maybe a rod length from the bow.

What to Look For Identifying productive bridge spots is mostly trial and error, but a few criteria will help you judge a good one. Current always benefits fishing, as it pulls food sources past ambush points usually on the downcurrent side of pilings. Position yourself according to the water s direction. You may want to sling a bait under the bridge and let it drift back out; other times, the current will help you position a bait at just the right point. Also, you can t go wrong by working near baitfish schools. When food abounds, someone with an appetite will find it, so work your baits into the natural food chain. While you re at it, don t hesitate to catch some of the local forage and float them in clear vulnerability on the outskirts of the school and along the bridge s shadowline. Most pilings bear numbers for maintenance reference. Keep track of where you caught fish and note specific points such as piling design, compass directions and any particular markings such as ropes, graffiti or excessive pelican guano. Like reefs, bridges offer abundant opportunity with lots of room for personal style. However, unlike their submerged counterparts, bridges are easy to locate and you rarely have to worry about finding dive flags on your spot. Tampa Bay Bridges In Old Tampa Bay the northwest arm of Greater Tampa Bay three bridges link Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. North to south, these are: the Courtney Campbell, Howard Franklan and Gandy. South of the Courtney Campbell s west end, the Tampa Bayside Bridge connects Clearwater and St. Petersburg. The big boy of the bunch, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge spans the mouth of Tampa Bay and links Pinellas to Manatee County. The original Skyway was demolished years ago after a phosphate barge hit one of the main span pilings during a squall. The north and southbound approach lanes were capped and converted into state park fishing piers.

Similarly, the original Gandy Bridge now serves as a biking/pedestrian route called the Friendship Trail, with lower catwalks extending from either end. The structures adjacent to the Gandy and Skyway bridges along with dedicated fishing lanes on smaller spans like the Tierra Verde Bridge (south Pinellas) give landbound anglers access to the bounty below. Bridge Considerations Watch Your Clearance: During a sudden summer downpour, my friend rushed under a section of the old Sunshine Skyway Bridge (now a pier) but forgot to pull down the rods from his T-top holders. The sound of hopelessly scarred fiberglass and graphite scraping against concrete was far worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. Lesson: Check your clearance and don t take chances with rods or antennas. Towerboaters will want to pay particular attention to clearance, and stay alert for the sudden lift of waves. You might have plenty of room while sitting still, but let a big boat or ship send 3-foot swells under your boat and you ll run out of space in a hurry. Dangling Tackle: Popping out from the bridge shadows and running face-first into a dropping hook or sinker is a guaranteed ER visit. Also, an often tenuous relationship exists between those fishing from a bridge and those motoring around it, so remember the courtesy thing and stay clear of deployed lines. Ready To Run: If you re targeting the bridge big boys tarpon, sharks, cobia you may have to run down a hefty fish. You may not have time to pull anchor, so rig a float to your anchor line and simply uncleat the rope and toss the whole deal overboard when go-time arises. After the fight, return to your float and retie your anchor line at your original position. Laws: Consult local or Coast Guard authorities for special navigation rules applicable to bridges in your area. The U.S. Coast Guard has relaxed its post 9-11 regulations limiting boat proximity to bridges. Currently, a 100-foot security zone applies to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge s center span, its pilings, dolphins and rock abutments. All other rules of navigation still apply, but anglers are allowed to fish elsewhere along the Skyway and other area bridges. Read more:

Great Fishing Afoot Beaches and Bridges by Tom Levine Fishing Down on the Boulevard Surf fishing s not just an Atlantic game. We survey promising shoreline on the West Central Gulf Coast. Surf fishing paradise between Fort DeSoto Park and Clearwater? Well, one fishing truth is that many people overlook the obvious. If you like the image of your drag searing out with some of the Gulf s most crowded coast at your back, maybe reaching a hand back for a soft drink to sustain you in the battle, picture yourself stepping off Gulf Boulevard, State Route 699. There s mackerel, blues, snook and more out there that ain t sceered by condos and carbon monoxide. If you plan to be in St. Petersburg or Clearwater on business or pleasure, remember to pack your tackle. Just pick your fish attractor. The saltwater ones are usually easy to spot. You ll find two of the best ones together passes and bridges. The passes, where tide pulls Gulf back and forth into intracoastal waterways and lagoons, are natural fish meccas. Add a good ol barnacle-encrusted bridge featuring an eddy on the downstream side of every piling and you ve got to be thinking not, Will I catch anything, but, What kind of fish will I catch next? Access points abound between Fort DeSoto Park and Highway 60 into Clearwater. You get a choice: fish the passes from beach, bridge or jetty, or walk out on the beach and start casting. There are major public beaches along the way and between those, frequent public paths to the beach. You re never far from a casting opportunity. My boys and I started at Fort DeSoto and cruised north, checking out spots along the way. Fort DeSoto is a glorious Pinellas County park south of St. Petersburg and a world away. It s great to see a park where it s clear the designers actually thought nature was a good idea and so left a lot of it around. That s Fort DeSoto in spades. Here you ll find vast, non-crowded fishing ops wherever you look. Not to mention gorgeous campsites. Ours had a waterfront view. We went kayak fishing in mangroves, spotted snook from little bridges, surf fished, and stalked the most wadeable flats ever. I didn t want to leave but the Boulevard and, by extension, home in Central Florida was calling. We had plenty of adventure ahead, with the goal of seeing how many times we could grab those rods and make for salt water between our campsite and the big Pier 60 in Clearwater. We started watching for a good bridge.

Ordinary people think a bridge is just an easy way to get across the water. Fishermen know better. We recognize a spectacular blending of engineering and architecture, a tribute to the indomitable human spirit, one of the truest symbols of man s exit from the cave and into the realm of fishing. When we see a sign that says DRAW BRIDGE AHEAD we are likely to take pencil in hand and draw a bridge with a head on it. Our proud wife is then likely to say, That s good, honey. That s real good. Bridges come in different flavors and a fisherman should be keenly aware of the distinctions: Is it a nice, low bridge? Is it a tightfisted stingy bridge bookended with NO FISHING signs or is it a liberal, welcoming bridge that recognizes its duty to taxpayers driven by the pursuit of fish, with a catwalk and parking space at either end? Does it sport mid-channel fish-attracting, barnacle-encrusted fenders? Is there a beach at each end where a person can land and photograph that giant cobia? Are there lights? Is there a bait and tackle shop nearby? The boys and I soon hit a bridge that met all the criteria. We opted for tiny tube lures on 1 16-ounce jigheads with a splitshot a couple feet up the line for weight. Six-pound test and no leader. Not using a leader means hoping for pompano, whiting, flounder, lookdowns, maybe mangrove snapper over blues and macks. If you re feeling adventurous, light line is great for bridge fishing because it has little water resistance, enabling you to use light lures and letting your lure stay longer where you want it in current; and low wind resistance which lets you put it there in the first place. And yes, with a little luck in what part of the mouth gets the hook, you can land snook and toothy fish with that line. Of course, you ll need a longhandled dipnet, or a hoop net on the end of a nylon line, if you plan to haul up anything substantial. If Spanish and blues are around, best to try 30-pound-test mono or light wire. Night fishing from bridges can be exciting. Try 1 4- to 1 2-ounce bucktails or tube lures, and walk the bridge, dropping by pilings or the best place, by the bridge fenders. Wait for a light tap, then hang on to that snook. Heavier tackle is helpful for this, at least 15-pound test. If he heads unstoppably for a piling, give him slack line. Normally the snook will stop and you can eventually ease him away. Tarpon also are a distinct possibility. If it s a low bridge and you have a lantern, lower it on a rope to just above the water. It s fascinating just seeing the weird creatures that swim through the light and often it attracts big fish to catch. It s a special feeling just being out on a bridge at night fresh night breeze, maybe some moon, stars, mystery. For a much simpler pass fishing experience, just park and walk down to the sand, find a nice eddy or bend and start tossing that little tube lure or spoon. Or fish from

the bridge abutments. You may just find out what s out there. Ladyfish and jacks, two of our most spectacular fighters, are always a good bet. Moving on, the boys friend Nigel spotted a glimmer down a road out the left side of the van. We parked and got out. Folks sitting on a well placed picnic table, weighted lines out with cutbait. Seawall and rocks are sprinkled with the occasional fisherman. I ask how s the fishing. Not good at the moment, but it looks good, with the inlet curving out to the left a couple football fields away. Easy fishing, with a nice little eddy right here, little dock to the right; I can just picture predators slashing in at exhausted bait schools trying to hang out of the current. Get Your Feet Wet Or Not Fort DeSoto Park: 3500 Pinellas Bayway S., Tierra Verde. This park has it all: Campgrounds, boat ramp, Bay and Gulf fishing piers, canoe trails, observation tower and more. To reach the main office, call (727) For the camp store, dial (727) Kayak rentals available in park for excellent and easy backwater angling; call (727) Redington Long Pier: Gulf Blvd., Redington Shores. Excellent antique pier with tackle shop. Big Pier 60: 1 Causeway Blvd., Clearwater; (727) Adult fishing admission $6.30. Bait and tackle sold on site. Wingin It: Pinellas County has lots of public beach access, and there are bait and tackle shops scattered up and down Gulf Blvd. Winter is a good time to fish; the water s cool, and you won t be competing with swimmers for space. One shop we spoke with, West Wind Bait and Tackle (727) , advised getting in on the whiting bite, using small bits of shrimp on a sliding sinker rig. You can walk out and catch whiting all day, and some pompano here and there, said owner Tom Williams. Our beaches do a good job at giving everybody access. West Wind is located between Johns Pass and Redington Long Pier. Another B&T we consulted with was The Bait Bucket in Tierra Verde, (727) They recommended fishing for sheepshead around structure, and said with a warm winter, or early spring, migratory fish such as Spanish mackerel and kingfish are a possibility off the piers. The fishing varies according to water temp. Here s a quick look at some spots we checked:

Pinellas Bayway (SR 679) south to Tierra Verde draw bridge: Perfect for fishermen, with continuous vehicle access via dirt track paralleling road. Many breaks in the mangroves, where you can wade or launch paddle craft. Look for seatrout, redfish, snook, tarpon, mangrove snapper in the mangroves. Ideal place for soft jerkbaits, spoons and tube lures. Tierra Verde draw bridge: Fishing encouraged, catwalks and guard rails. Public parking at both ends, particularly north end. Pretty spot. Tierra Verde behind Mercantile Bank: Local knowledge hotspot; small grouper, seatrout, snapper. From Tierra Verde to Fort DeSoto County Park: Everywhere you look; very fishing friendly. Passe-a-Grille: A town made for fishing. Long seawall on inside, right next to road; just park, step out and start fishing. Scattered park benches for exquisite comfort, and scattered small docks. Passe-a-Grille jetty at southernmost point is particularly known for pompano; also great beach access with metered parking and playground park near beach. Small side bridge by Sea Critters Restaurant. Small and wide beach accesses scattered along Gulf Blvd. St. Petersburg Beach, 75th Ave. bridge: No guard rail; park by city hall. Boca Ciega Bay bridge: Parking and boat ramp. Gulf Blvd. bridge to Treasure Island: Easy parking. Boat ramp Treasure Island, 100th Ave. and Gulf Blvd.: good small dock, good depth. Fishing access also at 101st and 102nd avenues, plus small beach access across from 103rd Ave. 112th Ave.: Little side bridge, easy parking. Boat launch and dock: 123 Ave. John s Pass: Public access from north side, fishing jetty. Catch whiting, pompano, sheepshead, seatrout and redfish. Madeira Beach Causeway: Beach access and nearby park. Indian Shores-Park Blvd: Boat ramp has park and restroom; seawall fishing from park, also bridge. Indian Rocks Beach: Seawall fishing. Sand Key Park: County beach park at 1060 Gulf Blvd., south side of Clearwater Pass. Phone (727)

For general Pinellas County parks information, visit The Hit List Year round: whiting, seatrout, redfish, mangrove snapper, tarpon, snook. Fall-early winter: Pompano, Spanish mackerel, kings, bluefish (some blues yearround). Sheepshead: Big spawners show up winter through spring. Drop bait around pilings and hang on. Stout tackle and leader helpful for this style angling. Read more: Had any interesting fishing experiences? Heard of any interesting fishing ideas? 18 VLFC - LAKE OKEECHOBEE EVENT From the Desk of Denny Lombardi Director at Large, VLFC n Tuesday, March 7 th a small group of us went to Roland Martins resort on Clewiston on Lake Okeechobee. We arrived Mid-afternoon and explored the town which did not take very long. We had dinner at the Tiki bar at the resort and retired early as we had to meet our guides at 6:30 am. The resort had a complimentary breakfast which was OK and then we met our guides and got our bait which was shiners. We hit the lake just as the sun was coming up (*Editors note - see Picture of the Month Sunrise at Lake Okeechobee ). It was a perfect Florida morning. After about a 15 minute boat ride we pulled up near some grass and started fishing. They started biting right away but it took us a few tries to get the hang of fishing with shiners and bobbers. The guide told us to wait until the bobber went completely under and then count to 5 slowly before setting the hook. He said the bass had to get the shiner positioned so it could be swallowed head first. Five seconds is a long time while your bobber is under. Once we got the technique down we started dragging them in. Eight of us in 4 separate boats that all went in their own direction caught approx. 100 bass in 4 hours. They ranged in size from 1-2 pounds to the largest which was 7 3/4 pounds. We caught them non-stop from the time we got there until we left. Often times when with a guide you get told that "you should have been here last week". We had our last week and it was great. Denny
